So far we have the 7th day incident and now, this. Amba reincarnation story doesn't hold water in light of these things.

The only reasons I can see if Bheeshma wanting to save face. This, plus the contradictions make it quite likely Shikhandi had a bigger role to play in Bheeshma's death.

Bheeshm Pitamah would have a fight with Ved Vyas ji in Swarg now.

How efficiently he tried to conceal his failure to trade for a dignified fall, but VedVyas ji made it pretty obvious

How can he save face after his death? He didn't know he will die on day 10, he became a larger than life character, they had to give him a worthy farewell so decided to give him this arc of Shikhandi and Amba, Like Karna, Arjuna and Krushna became larger than life characters

@TM 🤧 Sorry

I guess the most uncomfortable part of Mahabharata is that we can't restrict ourselves to a single topic and always end up deviating from it

They were already the ruling class, already larger than life. Bheeshma didn't die on day 10. He died after war. Also, war parvas were told as flashbacks, not in realtime. ie, Bheeshma Parva was narrated by Sanjaya AFTER the fall of Bheeshma. Fairly easy to tuck in a new story.

On that note isn't it a little ironic that the Parvas during the war(most important part of the entire epic) are named after the Pradhan Senapati of the antagonist side.

I mean we could have had Bheeshm Parva named as Arjun/Krishna Parva, Drona Parva as Abhimanyu/Ghatochkat Parva, Karna Parva as maybe Pandav Parva Parva and Shalya Parva as Bheem Parva

I mean the protagonist don't get a Parva on their names but the leads from antagonist side do get one

But how can Bheeshma stay alive after such blood loss and injury to his vitals?

Well if we believe what is written he was. Aside it does happen that people despite being severely hurt remain alive for days before actual death

This Iccha Mrityu stuff seems highly improbable to me, I think he somehow survived days after the injury

I think it's due to the fact that Kaurava commanders kept changing.

I know that's exactly the reason. But I just said it's little ironic

Yeah maybe. Major changes came in the battle after the fall of each commander.

I read it more like each book focussed on the challenges faced by the Pandavas & overcoming them.

So name of each book/parva is regarding the biggest challenge in the parva e.g. Bhishma, Drona, Karna, Shalya.

Also true that while the Kaurava commanders changed frequently, Dhrishtyadyumna remained commander for all 18 days.
