Oh, I can't imagine how good the book must be then because the show itself was pretty damn touching. There were some aspects of it that I found a little...off...as well though, such as the way Saba was shown to be so 'blessed' and revered in terms of her prayers being accepted, picking out the best of fruit, etc. I thought it was done a little too overtly, you shouldn't have to show something to such an extent that the viewer feels like a hammer is being dropped on his or her head 😆 On top of that, I actually don't think this factor of Saba being especially blessed needed to be thrown in there for us to understand her 'goodness' or to sympathize with her...it seemed way too contrived. Other than that, the only thing they really needed was some brutal editing because boy, would some scenes (especially Faisal Qureshi crying or the last two episodes, where Sara goes to live with some crazy girl who had wtf written all over her; was that in the book?) get so, so long. Ah, the exact reasons why I said the book was better than the serial. My biggest grouch with it was Saba's character...she was never shown to be THAT blessed or anything. Yes, she was a person who got all what she wanted. But in the book, as a character, she was veryy umm...strange...the way she thought about things n all...she wasn't even that much in love with Arfeen as she was shown to be in the serial. There were some amazing dialogues by Saba that were edited out too. As for the dragging, I felt it wasn't just in those last episodes, they dragged out a lot of things....stretched out the story a lot...but may be it's the book thing...If you have read the book, it's difficult not to constantly compare how things were originally supposed to be. I guess, as it's one of my favorite Umera's book, I was too attached to the 'originality' of the characters to like the serial much. But over all, the tragedy of the story was great enough to overshadow the flaws for me, especially the timeline happening in the past. If you don't mind, can I ask what exactly was the reason why Saba didn't swear on the Quran in the book? From the show, I deduced that she never intended to do it because in a way it would be dishonorable (did you know that you're actually not supposed to swear on the Quran, even though it's such a go-to kind of thing for people now? So the show's whole premise is actually based on a messed-up practice :P But that's for another time and another discussion.) Since Arfeen's mother was made to do it first and she was such a 'pious' woman, I don't think Saba ever thought that it'd come to her swearing on it. But after it did happen, much to her shock, I guess she didn't want to partake in an oath wherein such great breach of all that is sacred was being carried out. Actually, I can think of multiple reasons as to why she wouldn't want to do it at that point anymore...for one, it'd be her word against Arfeen's mother's, there would be no solution, only more chaos and moreover because she was greatly disappointed that none of these people believed in her or trusted her enough to accept that she didn't do anything wrong or forgive her even if she did without her having to prove her innocence by swearing on the Quran. But now I'm totally rambling and I've written way too much so I'll shut up about MZZBN 😆
@black..You are right, she thought, 'pious' or not, Arfeen's mother would never do it ( She did lie and put a 'tohmat' on her...which isn't less than a sin) and her mother WAS, however villainous she was, afraid of doing so. But when she did swear on Quran dishonestly, Saba has this monologue going inside her mind that if SHE does it as well...everyone would know one of them IS lying..."Phir Quran ki kia izzat reh jai gi...Kisi ko toh Quran ki hurmat ka paas rakhna tha" Those were her exact dialogues, if I remember correctly...and I most usually do. It's your gallery, you writing a lot is OK. Here, I feel I should stop spamming your gallery!Yessss! I just watched the 15th episode today and man, does this woman know how to string out an emotional connect or what? And that too with so much subtlety! There are no amazing twists or even spell-binding, flowing dialogues...everything is so simple, so real, and yet it touches you, you feel for these characters. A lot of it is definitely credited to the acting as well, these guys are doing a stupendous job. Even Maliha's grey character touches me and I can understand the pressures because of which she changed or the feelings out of which she reflexively acted so callous. I see what she is going through right now at her in-laws and even despite the fact that I know this is karma, I can't help but feel sad for her. That is the mark of great writing...to make you sympathize even with characters that have erred. I lovedlovedloved the scene where she flashbacks to a conversation between her and Yasir before marriage and she's telling him that life without Zara is a horror even to think of. You come back into present day and she's standing choked up on the staircase after just having fought with Yasir, because all that used to be rosy has now become rusted. It was such a moment of sadness. Brilliantly written and portrayed. Trust me, you're not the only pankha here 😆 Only a glance at how much I've written and you'll know that I'm running on high-speed 😆 Oh, the actors are doing complete justice to the show. And I loveee that scene too. It reminded me of the day when Zara, literally, lend Maliha her shoulder to cry on. It's Umera's brilliance that even after what she has done, I feel for her...her helplessness and loneliness at this point make you sympathize with her too. The characters are really very well-sketched. There's point to why a character behaves in a certain way. Like we know that there's reason why Yasir is so over-protective and possessive about his mother n sister....you know...the whole his father divorcing his mother, leaving her alone n all. And thankfully, It's not over-dramatic or anything...No worries, I don't get offended easily, say what you feel should be said as a disclaimer ;) Will try to get my hands on a copy nevertheless and hope that I can do it justice :P LOL...It's not very wise to say that as a disclaimer to me..I've watched the first episode of Doraha, but what little I saw didn't rope me in enough to keep going. Don't really like Hamayoon Sayeed that much as well so maybe that's why. Same with Sarwat Gillani, but I hope that won't deter me from Malaal when I do watch it. I don't like HS much either but that doesn't stop me from liking the serial...the characters are good enough for me to ignore the actors..like I'm not much of a fan of Sanam Baloch but I like her in Daam....and Doraha picks up a bit after the 2nd and 3rd episode I believe. As for Malaal, dude, it is wayyyy better than Doraha and Sarwat Gilani is NOT the lead in it. Deepti (I'm not sure about the last name) is the lead.

@black: Ah, sounds just right with how I understood her actions to be! Interesting to hear that Saba was 'strange' in the book, that intrigues me. I liked her story with Arfeen though, it was sweet, simple, modest...one of the conversations I still remember between them is when they meet for the first time...he asks her why she wants to pursue further education and she says "Sha'oor haasil karne ke liye." 😊 Ooooh, and the best one was definitely when he comes to her after all those years upon finding out that she was innocent and asks her to forgive them and come back, to have certainty in his love...Saba says that she would have believed in his love if he had stood by her even if she had been wrong...he asks her who is it that ever stands by a wrong-doer? And she says God; he not only listens to the wrong-doer, but forgives and even blesses. He replies something along the lines of "He is God, Saba, and I am a human. What He is like, no one can ever be." Enough said about Umera Ahmed's awesomeness, that conversation just about sums it all up.Oh, the actors are doing complete justice to the show. And I loveee that scene too. It reminded me of the day when Zara, literally, lend Maliha her shoulder to cry on. It's Umera's brilliance that even after what she has done, I feel for her...her helplessness and loneliness at this point make you sympathize with her too. And thankfully, It's not over-dramatic or anything...Yes! There's actually a reason behind every character being the way it is, even Fizza and Yasir, who are the products of a dysfunctional marriage and household. Same with MZZBN, Arfeen's mother was the 'bad guy' but the way she acted was out of (unhealthy) love for her son. It's just what that love drove her to do which was so sinful. I still remember one of her dialogues, "Mere wujood ko aag bana dala us mohabbat ne, aur is aag mein kitno ke haath jal gaye." Pretty amazing writing right there.I don't like HS much either but that doesn't stop me from liking the serial...the characters are good enough for me to ignore the actors..like I'm not much of a fan of Sanam Baloch but I like her in Daam....and Doraha picks up a bit after the 2nd and 3rd episode I believe. I tried watching the first episode of Malaal last night and the only video uploaded on YT for it doesn't match with the sound 😆 I wish the channels would upload these shows in original quality. Or maybe Mehreen Jabbar should.
