Well, its my own experience, there will be differing opinions, but I feel its appropriate to share my view as I've Been There Done That 😊 Sharing few incidents which shook me, surprised me & moved me.

1) After watching my presentation, on our way to cafeteria, a girl (Korean) said "You speak English very fluently, You might be from a wealthy family, right.? " Her correlation made no sense, so asked her why does she thinks so, for which she replied, "English is a luxury in Korea, it needs to be tutored privately, not everyone can afford it. Whats taught in schools is mostly primary"

2) One day I wore kurti & took a subway, I observed 8/10 people staring at me. I felt so conscious & nervous that I was about to trip when all those came to my rescue, asked me if I was Okay, told me to take care & even helped me with directions with whatever little English did they know. Once a lady came with me half my destination to make sure I don't get lost.

3) Their noodles is buttery & some dishes are saucy, so I wanted to brush & when I reached the washroom, there is a long line holding their brushes. I asked few people as to why they are so particular & to my surprise therez a theory behind it which was infused by their leaders. "For many years they've been isolated & none of its neighboring countries wanted to ally. After years, when they revived economically, every korean got access to Higher education, food & cosmetics. Their leaders set some standards in their society & those incl. personal grooming. They were taught Koreans should be known for perfection, so they need to be perfect in every aspect. That's how looks were given importance & the coming generations are just overdoing it. It was education along with looks, but koreans imbalanced it" This sound so right to me. Btw, I never put on makeup & absolutely none judged.

4) Ajhummas !! There are few uneducated middle aged women who are blunt, loud & extremely superstitious of whom almost all koreans are scared of. They said there was something called 'Pure Blood race' which their ancestors used it as a tool for Korean identity to keep themselves apart from other cultures. It was later raged by daily workers who felt threatened when outsiders came to SK for work, which now turned into a serious issue with lack of anti-discrimination laws in their land. These people openly curse at foreigners. Some of my mates used to tell me to avoid eye contact with such people. Since the country experienced imperialism western during modernization, the younger generation are receptive to other races, One of the prof was an Indian who got married to a Korean. One of their queens who is still alive is an Indian princess. Its grown over the years, still theres a long way to go.

5) One said to me, "Your face is not covered with big bindi". Among the group, there was a Thai girl. A korean boy asked her out & while talking, he asked "How much?". That's how prejudiced they are. When I told them, I come from south India, I am a vegan, I don't eat Naan & curry instead we eat Dosa, Biryani etc & I don't speak Hindi. All the while I was explaining to them, there were just Ooohs & Aahs. They were surprised at how we manage to put up with varied cultures. I also mentioned how Indian economy is growing & our GDP is way ahead of them, hence it isn't a poor country, it is still developing. They told me "There is no diversity in Korea & hence theres isn't much room to understand other races. The only way they are familiar with other parts is through media. Most people have bias on certain race if those people are projected in bad light in the mainstream media. India has been covered as a place unsafe for women. Pakistan as a place for terrorists. As the west meets our lifestyle & major influence of Hollywood movies, we look upto theirs as ours."

From the above instances, its clear that the place is a mixed bag. It depends on how we taken in & give it back.

This has to be the longest reply I ever gave. I know "Itne bhaari gyan ki zaroorat nahi hai" 🤣 just sharing my experience.

This makes a lot of sense! Thanks for sharing your experience girl! There has been too much negativity and I am glad we are getting some positives too now. I need time to process it, but it has some great insights!

It's funny everyone was waiting to brush their teeth😂 well they wanna look perfect so....

The close off society... 👀 I hear them...

I'll think more about it though.

Thank you for sharing again!🤗

I am thinking between two.... The first one seems absolutely crazy, and second doesn't fit either.

It's not Hyun bae of course..... Right??

@Divu .. Your experience parallels with the perception I have of Korea! .. Varied people, varied generations ... hence varied experiences! .. The history you spoke of I have read of the same while I was reading up the reasons for the community to be so obsessed with their "looks" (-I think we have had this discussion before) .. Also agree about them being secluded ... Few pages back I stated the same: the reason why they aren't so receptive to other cultures and people! .. Globalization and western influence is a good change for their society ... But I think it'll take decades for them to open up to the idea of "openness" to ALL .. 😛

That was interesting. . Tfs Divz. I watched "An ode to my father" today, and I got an idea of the same things you said about Korea being secluded for a long time when it was a poverty stricken country and also about them being downright rude to foreigners on their face (an instance is shown in the movie). Now they are getting more exposure because of some of their companies becoming global giants, kpop gaining popularity worldwide, their cinema and dramas getting recognition, etc. But english is still a barrier it seems, and unless they fully overcome it , things will still be difficult for them. This makes me think, one of the few things that Angrez did good to our country is English education.. or else it would have been as tough for us as koreans.
