CHAPTER 17
“When everyone knows you’re a monster, you needn’t waste time doing every monstrous thing.”
― Leigh Bardugo, Six of Crows
Arjun had let his monster take over him.If this is what the world thinks of him ,he'd gladly give it to them.He smirked ,a little sadist smile taking over his lips.He watched on in satisfaction as Surender Sharma screamed in pain, his multiple efforts of wiping the blood going in vain.
Having narrowed down the truck they were looking for, Arjun and Co. had begun a search for it .Chotu's informer had called in ,reporting the sighting of the truck.Apparently it was in the holdings of one Surender Sharma, who owned a logistics company.Sharma had quite a police record and was arrested twice for his involvement in a drug cartel. When ETF had reached his little office in a residential building, the thug had tried to fly coop.Naturally,a fight had ensued .It yielded two interesting results : #1 Surender was definitely involved. #2 Arjun had succeeded in injuring the thug in the crossfire.
Now, twenty four hours after the research specialist's kidnapping,Arjun had one decent lead. But the man in front of him proved to be a stubborn soul. Running low on sleep and patience ,Arjun had walked out of the interrogation room ,only to return with a knife from the pantry. He walked up to the mum Mr.Sharma ,and made a clean cross on his hand .The man shrieked in pain ,as blood oozed out of his hand. And then ,as if letting everything go ,Arjun had turned the knife over and with the blunt wooden side stabbed deeper in the wound, eliciting more screams.
Behind the glass wall, others were witness to his barbaric action.24 hours and a million curses later,he was still fighting ,with double the valour from the previous moment .
"This guy better speak up now" says Yash."Arjun is this close to losing it and killing the guy.And I'd have a hard time reeling him in"
Fortunately for either of them Surender had pain to last him a lifetime and he decided to speak up.And when he did, he threw the entire ETF into chaos.
"Professor Digen Verma is alive"

Liza D'Cruz couldn't have possibly imagined that this was something she would have to deal with.Having worked endless hours with dead bodies could have never prepared her for a scare this big. As she worked along with Dr Priya ,Liza could feel her thoughts gravitating towards the unwanted obvious.A bacteria so tiny could wreak havoc in the entire city ,if they were unfortunate ,the entire country.Neither of which they wanted.
The Chief walks in ;his forehead dipping into lines of worry. As sooner as he enters,Dr.Priya could feel the shift in the atmosphere.Suddenly everyone around her tensed up ,straightened in seconds. Priya knew of Arjun as a caring person, what with his frequent calls to her regarding Riya's health. Here in his natural habitat,he walks like a tiger let loose upon the world.
"Liza ,Report." he retorts, his voice cold and rough at the same time.
"We're working on a possible treatment Sir." the petrified Forensic Expert says.
"WHAT DOES WORKING MEAN?!! THAT B*****D HAS THE PROFESSOR !GOODNESS KNOWS WHAT THE TWO OF THEM ARE UP TO" Arjun blasted." THE CITY IS UNDER THREAT FOR ***** SAKE . "
Dr.Priya was taken aback yet spoke indignantly "Firstly, Mr.Rawte ,is bacteria ka koi treatment nahi hai. We were using a combination of medicines to hinder the spread of the bacteria in Riya's body .Secondly, treatment is based on the patient's body and their immune system , neither of which we have an idea of right now. So kindly let your steam off somewhere else. "
The entire forensics department gasped in unison. There's no way that the oh so sweet and timid doctor had just talked back at the ACP.
As for Arjun, he controlled himself. Not wanting to be on bad terms with someone who could help them, he walked away.
"Your boss needs to work on his anger management"

"exigo a me non ut optimus par sim sed it malis melior " - I require myself not to be equal to the best , but to be better than the bad
Professor Digen Verma was alive. The one thread they had left loose during the investigation of the Xzora case 3 years ago. They couldn't find him. And after Riya's little stunt at the dam, nobody had bothered to look for the missing professor or anything related to it. They had kept the debacle under wraps, as requested by Riya's family. And of course, Arjun took the blame for it.
He couldn't get rid of the horrible feeling that engulfed him everyte he entered the office, the cabin or the cars. He'd look around hoping for a miracle, hoping that she just creeps out of the shadows and this nightmare would ce to an end. His anxiety was at its peak, sleep and peace far away from him. Nothing could stop his brain going haywire. He'd do ten things at once, barking orders, noting down things, mapping the areas. And all the while trying to get rid of the ghastly picture his broken mind kept painting- A blood soaked Riya, lying unconscious. No matter how much he tried to put his heart and mind into things that needed his attention, he found himself always going to her.
He wanted her. He craved for her contagious smiles and her ever-present positivity (only if that's left in her). He wanted to run his hand in her hair until his fingers hurt. He wanted to hold her close, until the world and its suffering slips by. He wanted to breathe the same air as her, he'd live with her anyhow.
He needed her to live.
And for that he needed to bring her back. Back from their tormentor.
For the millionth time, Arjun steels his mind. "Get me everything we've managed to find." he orders his Juniors. "Everything we have so far. Let's go over this from the beginning. There must have been something we've overlooked. All the records, footages, statements EVERYTHING." He puts his hands together, the fingertips touching. Behind him the sun was setting, yet again. But Arjun was determined to make this end into a beginning.
