Chapter 8
Arjun walked inside quietly. Roshni had excused herself sometime back to accompany one of their important guest. Arjun looked around the long hall. There were paintings displayed on the walls. The exhibition was coordinated by the children of the orphanage. Though supervised and helped by the elders, the kids managed pretty well.
Few of them were roaming about the hall where they displayed the paintings. They were the painters. If any guest showed an interest on any of the paintings, the respective painter would instantly move to the guest give a brief description of the painting and any other questions asked. It amused the guests and they would buy the painting bringing in a wide smile and a proud feel on the face of the painter.
Some kids, a bit older, would manage the selling counter, along with a few coordinators. Some at the wrapping section and some were waiters, who ate more than they served.
Arjun looked around and found one such kid was sitting in a remote corner eating a plate of chips and a glass of cold drink when someone caught him from the back. It was the ever shouting and scolding pritha, Roshni's room mate. Arjun cursed the child's fate to have been caught by this weird human, but to his amusement, she didn't scold him. Instead she took another packet of chip from the back and poured the contents on the plate and both gobbled the contents happily. Both satisfied their instant hunger and gave a clap, then back to their work.
Arjun followed pritha and found her quite efficient in her work. Though her structure, her voice and her thoughts disturbed him and were weird but when it came to work, she was a woman of substance. She knew her work well and had her own way of getting it done. He was watching her when she walked away to the other room, scolding one of the workers and Arjun felt alone and idle again.
Arjun reluctantly walked ahead looking into the paintings. He didn't have any knowledge about art and paintings and was not interested too, but these were some exclusive ones. He tried to analyze some but couldn't make out much. That's when the painters helped him. He was amused at the way they described their thoughts. It was really remarkable.
He appreciated their efforts and move to the next hanging frame, clearly disappointing them. After checking three such paintings, he looked at the sad faces behind and declared he would buy all three, gaining some bright happy smiles.
He was waiting at the wrapping counter where the painting was being wrapped in news papers properly after being sold. That's when he heard Roshni's voice beside him,
'sorry, wo thora kam tha, tumhe paintings pasand aye?' she asked, looking at the paintings being packed,
'haan maam, uncle ne teen paintings liye, ye dekho,' the boy at the wrapping counter shouted,
Roshni looked at Arjun surprised. She hadnt expected he would buy even one. Arjun gave a goofy smile and she knew the reason. She shook her head and smiled back at him. The paintings were packed and roshni asked them to be kept at her desk as she walked to the garden with Arjun.
'Apko aise paintings nehi lene chahiye the, they would have understood,' roshni spoke up once they were alone trolling in the garden,
'I know, lekin mujhe unki itni mehnaat bohot pasand ayi hai, aur itni mehnaat ke baad, ek udas chehra mujhe pasand nehi ata,' he replied,
'thank you,' she told him,
'kyu?' he asked surprised,
'Ap itne busy the, firbhi ap aye aur bacho ko motivate kiya, uske liye thanks,'
They sat down on a nearby bench, from where they could see the little kids playing at a dstance.
A long silence followed, where none of them spoke or looked at the other. They were lost in their own far away thoughts. Suddenly Arjun broke the silence, alerting Roshni,
'ek sach batau?' he spoke up,
'haan,' she replied, looking at him, surprised,
'I have not come to Dehradun for any work. I had come to meet you...' He started and looked at her, she was looking at him with a confused expression,
'Roshni, I had always been alone, all my life. My parents haven't been lineint enough to give me company or care for me and I couldn't make enough friends to stay with me. My only friend was Sam and when I lost him, I lost myself. I might have killed myself, had I not found that picture of yours, in Sam's belongings.
Sam had once told me about you. He respected you and cared for you and I know, you too cared for him. He had told me about your past and the way you struggled in your life. I found my life similar to yours and somewhere I started believing you could fill the emptiness in my life.'
'Arjun..' she was baffled,'nehi roshni, mujhe kehene do. I know I sound selfish. I am selfish roshni. I am a greedy person. I always long for care, for concern, for someone who would wait for me. Jaha bhi thora pyar milta hai waha rehe jata hu. Mein yaha bhi nehi ata roshni, had you not waited for me. I know I sound insane. But it's the truth.
These kids are orphan coz they don't have parents. I have parents, they are alive, but I am still an orphan. Mom dad ka divorce, fir mom ki dusri shadi, fir dad ka US jana, everything had made me this. This loneliness, the solitude is engulfing me every moment of my life. Sam was a boon in my life and I lost that. I am afraid to get back to this loneliness, but see the loneliness never left me.
You are an awesome person roshni, i am really glad I came to meet you. You have somewhere given me the strength to carry the burden of my wrecked life alone. We might never ever meet again but ill always remember you.
Main kal wapas ja raha hu, shayad kabhi wapas nehi aunga, aur mujhe pata hai, mere jaise pagal se tum kabhi milna bhi nehi chahogi. But trust me, aur koi samjhe ya na samjhe, I can understand the pain you are going through after losing Sam. I am feeling the pain, but couldn't ever confess to anyone, but now after meeting you, I know I have a supporter of my pain and ill cherish these days all my life.'
Roshni could feel her eyes getting moist and her throat dry. She tried to open her lips to speak but words couldn't make their way out of her pressed lips. She looked down and closed her eyes, while a lone tear made its way down her cheek. She felt Arjun palm on her hand and looked at it,
'Roshni, Sam to humare saath hai, humare har baath mein hai, uski yadein, uski adatein, har cheese mein wo hain, usse miss karke apne apko itni takleef maat do, he wouldn't have liked to see you in pain.'
Roshni frowned at him and he smiled,
'feel the pain Roshni, but don't live it.'
'Sorry, kuch zyada bore kar diya, ab mein chalta hu, wo paintings tum apne pas rakh lo, shayad kabhi tumhe meri yaad dila de, I am sorry again, for disturbing you. ' Arjun looked at her, she again had tears in her eyes.
He shook his head and the tears rolled down on her cheeks. He looked away. He hated to see pain in her eyes and hated it more when he was the reason behind it.
Arjun stood up,
'mujhe ab chalna chahiye, it was a pleasure to meet you roshni, take care of yourself, bye,'
Arjun walked away without looking back. He could hear a sob left her lips, but he didn't stop. He hired a cab and quickly reached his room. He fell on the bed silent. Unknown to him a tear rolled down from the end of his eye.
************
A year passed by.
Arjun had returned back to mumbai and joined back ETF, as the ETF chief. Masi' was back in his house, taking care of him. ETF was busy dealing with the increased rate of crime in the city. It was taking almost the whole day and long nights to solve some elite tricky cases. Arjun hardly returned back due to his work schedule, but masi maintained his house well.
Sam was still being missed from every part of his life. But as they say life goes on and for Arjun life had become extremely busy. In his initial days as the chief, it was difficult for him to accept everything. But now after he had adopted with the emptiness in his life, he was back to his workaholic self, chasing criminals, finding clues, analyzing situations and giving justice to the innocent was his only moto in life.
But among all these things, there was one thing which had suddenly evolved and developed several folds in all these months. It was his relation with Roshni.
On the day of the exhibition after Arjun left Roshni at the park bench alone, Roshni finally realized what the man Arjun was. She had heard of him from Sam several times, but didn't know his inside story. Now when she knows something about it, she could connect to his pain and concern for her.
Though she had posed strong in front of everyone and had struggled all her life to get what she desired, somewhere down her heart she knew she was a lost, bruised soul. She felt lonely and deprived of the love she deserved from her family.
She understood then that both of them had Sameer, who gave out his heart to them, giving them a reason and support to live. Now Sam is gone and along with him is gone their reason to live. Roshni could see herself in the lost eyes of Arjun at that moment on the garden bench.
Now Arjun was leaving, never to return back. Though she ignored her own heart but she knew deep inside she was hurt. It would be silly to think she has fell for a man in just three days, but she was surely able to connect to this man and his painful heart in these mere three days. She sat quietly looking at the empty road from where he had left sometime back. She was lost in herself when a thunderous voice alerted her back to the present.
'ye le rosh, boring colddrink for you..'pritha came to her taking long steps,
She turned to the voice and found pritha rubbing her shirt where she had spilled some colddrinks while sitting down on the bench, beside her.
Roshni took the moment of her disturbed state and rubbed the moist under her eye. She blinked her eyelids several times and looked at her, to find pritha frowing at her with doubtful eyes.
'kya hua?' roshni asked looking away,
'tu ro rahi hai? uss kamine ne kuch kiya kya? Kaha hai wo?' pritha replied, scrutinizing her gaze around,
'chala gaya hai, aur wo kamina nehi hai,' roshni replied back, irritated,
'lo maine kab kaha kamina hai? dikhne mein to bewakuff hi laga,' pritha said earning a glare from roshni,
'okay, per tu itni udas kyu hai?' pritha sipping the drink she had brought for her friend,
'mein udas nehi hu,' roshni exclaimed signing hard,
'offcourse hai, tujhe bura lag raha hai na? I knew it,' pritha exclaimed happily taking a large sip from the glass, making it half empty,
'pritha,'roshni scolded her,
'rosh, tu bhi na?' pritha started and finished the glass with a last sip, and threw it away,
'pritha please, bakwas band kar, maine bataya tha na, wo sam ka dost hai aur isliye mein usse..' roshni tried to explain herself,
'pata hai rosh', pritha shifted close to her and wrapped her arms around her, 'per ye peheli bar hai, when you are thinking about someone other than Sam. I know I know, mujhe ghurna band kar, I know you just met him. But then if you couldn't connect to him, why were you sad for him? Why are you sad now? You are sad coz he would never return back. Tell me would you forget these few days ever?'
'pritha ye saab baat galat..'
galat kuch nehi hai meri jaan..i have seen him, he is a nice guy and trust me..tumlog ek dusre ko jitni ache se samjhoge, aur koi nehi samjhega, trust on my instints and believe yourself. Zindagi mein rishtey asanni se nehi milte, they have to be cherished, don't loose his friendship, he is worth it, aur fir mein hoon na aur mere boxing gloves bhi haina?'
'pritha, wo chala gaya..'
'kaha jayega? Abhi mumbai ke liye koi train nehi hai, kal subah jayega, meet him before he leaves, shayad wo ruk jaye,' pritha said smiling at her,
Roshni remained silent, pondering over her words. Pritha went away with the kids again, playing and jumping with them. It was a scene to watch. She smiled at herself.
She took her decision then and walked inside finishing her duties at the orphanage.
Two hour later she was standing infront of a closed door with the packed paintings with her. She had knocked on the door for the third time and still it wasn't opened. She had almost lost her final ray of hope and turned back with a hanging head when the door opened and Arjun's head peeped out.
'Roshni tum?' he shouted at her, showing his shocked face,
Roshni looked carefully and understood he had just come out of the shower with waterdrops dropping from his hair and hadn't dressed.
'Arjun tum..' roshni started laughing turning her back,
'ek minute,' Arjun closed the door with a loud bang and Roshni started laughing leaning on the wall,
A few minutes later Roshni was laughing hysterically at a blushing Arjun, sitting on the sofa.
'Arjun tum bhi na? kapre pehen ke darwaza kholte, kitna time lagta?'
'roshni mein darwaza kholne nehi gaya tha, bas eye se dekhne gaya tha, tab tum dikhi aur mujhe laga tum ja rahi ho,isliye instantly khol diya, ye bhi bhool gaya ki kapre pehena baki hai,' arjun replied with another shade of blushing cheeks,
Roshni started laughing again. The teasing session continued for some more time. Finally Arjun realized her sudden visit to him and asked about it showing his concern.
'Roshni, tum yaha? Sab thik hai na?' he asked,
'nehi kuch bhi thik nehi hai,' she replied with a pout,
'matlab? Kya hua? Exhibition mein kuch...'
'Arree nehi exhibition nehi, kaise aadmi ho, mein tumse milne ayi hu aur tum...mujhe nehi anaa chahiye tha,' she remarked turning her face away,
'Aree nehi, tum offcourse aa sakti ho, lekin itni raat ko ayi, isliye thora,'
'thik hai chali jati hu,' she said and stood up, only to be held back by Arjun,
'Roshni ruko, meine aisa kab kaha? Tum kabhi bhi, mujhse mil sakti ho, baat kar sakti ho,'
Roshni gave one of her beautiful smile and sat down.
'yeah paintings dene ayi thi,tum yaad karne ke liye mujhe iski zaroorat nehi.. Aur waise tum to kal chale jaoge, fir kabhi mulakat hogi ya nehi, isliye socha humare dosti ki akri raat saath mein guzarte hai,'
'akri kyu peheli bhi to ho sakti hai na?'
'hmm, wait...ek game khelte hai, agar tum jeet gaye to aj aakri raat, aur agar mein jeet gayi to aj humare dosti ki peheli raat,'
'kaisa game?'
'cards ka, tumhe ata haina?' he asked showing a deck of packed cards in her hand.
They settled down on the ground and kept the cards on the glass table. The cards had been shuffled and dealed. Both had taken up their cards and started their game. A few turns and Arjun won the game.
Roshni had not missed Arjun's eyes on her and the warmth feel it brought with it, it was a nice feel. The gaze wasn't irritating her, nor did it claim her, she was feeling fresh and happy. Again Arjun won the second game.
Finally when Roshni felt she would loose the next one too, she started cheating. But she was unaware of the cop's eyes tracking her each move. She had just picked up the extra card when he held her wrist.
'you are cheating roshni,' he said throwing his set of cards,
'offcourse not arjun, maine kab cheating ki?' she asked posing surprised,
'roshni,' he called her smiling,
'okay fine, you are such a ...' she too replied pouting,
'such a?' he asked,
'a joker, ye dekho, ye tum ho,' roshni replied showing him he card with the joker made on it.
The talks and laughs continued giving way to their new building friendship. Both of them were gradually getting comfortable with each other. Arjun left the next day with the promise they would remain in contact.
From that day onwards, it was his regular routine to call roshni, whenever he was free even if it was for mere seconds, a few minutes or just a goodnight message at times. He was feeling happy that both of them could actually cope up with their loneliness gradually.
*************
One fine morning he had just returned back from his regular jogging and pressed the bell, when a shock was waiting for him. A woman was standing in front of him, holding the door with the ever sparkling beautiful smile.
'Roshni tum? Kab ayi?' he asked her surprised,
'bas thori der pehele, tumhare liye hi wait kar rahi thi,' she said,
She left the door and Arjun stepped in. Masi came with his usual juice and Arjun introduced her to Roshni. Roshni was happy to know she knew Sameer and loved him like her own child. She ahd already started respecting her when Masi brought her a cup of tea.
Roshni and Arjun sat down with their beverages. That's when Arjun started talking,
'tum yaha achanak? Pehele kyu nehi bataya? Kuch kam hai kya?' he asked in a go,
'haan shadi hai meri, tumse,' she replied, closely looking at the changing color of his face,
'mujhse? Shadi?' he asked,
'haan tumhe ne to kaha, mumbai aa jau to hum shadi kar lenge, isliye aa gayi..' she replied,
'roshni..' he asked still doubtful about her presence,
'Arjun, tum mujhse shadi nehi karoge?' she asked with a pout,
Arjun kept the glass down and snatched her cup and kept that down. He instantly stood up and dragged roshni to the door. He opened the door and shouted inside,
'masi mein shadi karke jaldi aya, darwaza band karlo,' Arjun left the house leaving behind a chuckling masi.
'Arjun..' it was roshni's turn to get perplexed,
'chalo shadi karna hai na?' he said and wrapping his arms around her neck.
