Chapter-18:

Thirukkural: (Chapter-49; Poem-490)

The thing that made us runs toward the airport:

Inspector Avinash from control room informed," Sir! We've checked the traffic signal camera that was near the hotel area, but couldn't trace the jeep! We are now checking the next beat signals sir!"

"Sir! The number on the jeep is a fake one!" I said.

"I think we are dealing with a well-mannered group and they are many steps ahead of us!"

"See, we can't get a clue of what's going on here!"

We were talking and seeing Arjun once in a while as he was contemplating something seriously.

"We've to find out, which girl is with them first and for what! Then we've to find a way to reach them!"

Chottu grumbled.

"We still didn't hear from them after the first message from the airport!"

"We won't if they got anything suspicious!"

Ayesha reminded.

Arjun was still silent.

We decided not to disturb him and we went back to work.

I was checking the finger prints we got from the message cover given to Devananth.

We did not get many prints on it actually. The one on the letter was of Devananth's.

Now I was checking the other prints to see any recorded criminal had touched it as it had to move from place to place, from hand to hand, before touched by Devananth.

I screamed and disturbed not only Arjun, but also everybody around, forgetting the arrangement.

"Sir! We got a criminal here! He was listed here under shop-lifting, though he has no new entry here!"

We again entered into the airport premises quietly.

We got the fellow in dispatch, still working quietly with some posts.

He looked up as we approached.

"Vikram Rao?"

Chottu asked.

""Yes! What do you want?" he hesitated a moment seeing his persona.

"Just the truth!" I said.

"I don't understand!"

"How could you get a job here, while your name was in our records?"

That explained him who we were and he swallowed nervously.

"And who gave you this?"

Chottu thrust the cover under his nose, literally.

"What? I-"

He made his mind and started.

"Sir! I'm clean now. I tried many places to get a neat life. But I couldn't get a job. That's an old story. I got this job through a friend. Of course, I faked my id, but that was my last crime!"

We were not in a mood then for bemoan.

"Of course it's an old story. But what about this letter?"

"I didn't get this?"

"This letter has crossed your desk, before went to the reception area. Now tell me where did you get this or by whom?"

He turned the letter and saw it with a new eye now.

"I -"

"Yes?"

"I got this when I was collecting the posts from a box at the entrance this morning. As I saw there was no postal marks or anything, but a name on it I sent it to the reception. That's all I know!"

"Did you see anything suspicious, while collecting the posts? Saw anyone standing near the box?"

"Why, actually, someone came to the box in a rush and pushed some cover into it as I went to collect them. I thought he was in a rush and was putting it into the box."

"Did you see him?" I asked eagerly." Can you identify him?"

"I think, yes! He was in white and was medium built and height;"

"Did he speak something? Did you notice him moving away?"

"No, he didn't speak anything. But he didn't move toward the taxies. He went toward the parking lot, if I'm not mistaken."

"Can you identify the man in this picture?"

I showed him Devananth's picture.

"No, Why?"

"Show us the box you collected the posts from!"

The box was near the entrance, but not in front of the CCTV camera fixed at the entrance.

But there was a chance that, that fellow might have been crossing it, while came to put the letter in the box.

We got the video records and sat with Vikram Rao.

"At what time this happened?"

"I guess it was08:15 for I gave it in the reception at 08:30 this morning."

I was calculating the time element, for our suspect should send the message at 07:40am from Devananth's mobile and rush to the airport by 08:15 am to do the job here. From hotel it would take nearly forty five minutes and in the traffic and all it would take more to reach. He had to drive super fast to reach here with in forty minutes. He had to be well in driving and the short- cuts like a taxi driver.

Suddenly Vikram Rao entered in to my thoughts as he found a figure in the crowd.

"I think it's him!"

He said excitedly.

I saw the screen and tried to zoom-in the white shirt.

He was moving from one side of the entrance to the box, I guessed.

We could see only his side view as he moved and in the crowd it was difficult to focus on him.

One shot we got of him in good clarity was when he crossed a lady and moved towards the camera to avoid a dash. And that was enough for us.

I enlarged the picture and zoomed in further.

"That's him!"

Vikram Rao confirmed.

We moved to the clips where he went away after putting the thing in the box.

He crossed the camera once again and moved towards the parking lot.

"His parking lot ticket number is *******'."

The attendant informed us.

"Mr. Sunil Sastri?"

"Yes, you?"

The young man asked in return.

"Did you go to the airport this morning?"

"Yes, to send off a friend! Why?"

"And put a letter in a box near the entrance?"

"Yes, but who are you by the way?"

"ETF!"

"Oh!"

"Why did you put it in that box?"

"Someone at the entrance asked to do so. He said he was in a rush and wanted to go to see a friend in the hospital! I forgot to put it in the box while entering into the airport and returned once again from the parking lot. I saw that an official was going to take the posts. I rushed and put it in the box, before he reached it.

"Without a stamp or anything how could you put it in the box?"

"Oh, I didn't notice it. I thought it was something official and important."

"Can you identify him?"

"I think, yes!"

I once again showed him the picture of Devananth.

"No, it's not him!"

"Can you describe him?"

"He was in black and his accent was different. I think he is a Bengali!"

Bags (Bugs) sat on a chair tiredly.

He thought how he could manage between all these nuisances to put the cover into the box successfully.

He called this man, working in the factory, whom he could influence easily into helping him, for a fair share in the business he was about to start.

The man did as he was instructed like Jaisar, perfectly, he thought.

He had thought that if the cover was found in that box police would retrieve it on inquiry and that would help them to make sure that they had to stick on to the case.

Getting a man for the job at the gates was awesome and he had appreciated the man so and offered a bonus for him that he would get at the end of the show.
