Chapter 16

Arjun's hands tighten on his wheel. Ten years. it has been ten years since he had last seen this house. Yet it seems like nothing has changed. The house still looks coldly beautiful standing out with its white colour which always seems to be fresh. Arjun knows how much effort of the servants were put into making this. he opens the dashboard and takes out the remote.

Flashback

Arjun stares at the man in front of him who once was his father, his idol but now is a total stranger to him. he was the one person Arjun could never truly figure out. The man said "this is your final decision?"

Arj: yes, it is

Stran: you will regret it very soon.

Arjun knew he would say that yet it hurt to realize that his father would always consider the choices he made as the decisions he would regret it. yet arjun knew that becoming a police officer is the right thing to do.

Arj: we will see.

Sur: well, I am sure that you will be back within 6 months and see that what I told you was correct.

Arj: you always thought that you were correct?

Sur: was I ever wrong?

Arj: there is a difference between knowing and believing.

Sur: well do please tell me, what do you think I am correct in which manner?

Arj: mr rawte, I am not here to discuss what do you think about my profession. I am just here to say goodbye to you.

Suryakant turns to face and arjun is again struck by the resemblance between him and his father. Yet that was the only resemblance between them and he was determined to remain it that way.

Suryakant takes out a remote from his pocket and said "when you regret your decision you can use this remote and come home."

Arjun thought "never."

Flashback ends

Kar: shera

Arjun snaps out of his thoughts and presses the remote. The gates open and the car enters the driveway. Before the car enters the driveway, the doorway opens to reveal an old man wearing a kurta and a dhoti. He slowly ambles down the steps his age showing in his walking stick and as the car stops in the driveway he smiles. Arjun got down from the car and respectfully touches his feet.

Arj: good morning dadaji.

Dada: good morning dadaji? Arjun are you blind. I am not old. I am fit and strong. Girls still flirt with me you know.

Arjun smiles. Dadaji's heart feels a sign of happiness seeing his smile. This was their usual exchange.

Arj: dadaji, if you flirt with girls, then what will happen to dadiji?

Dada: dadiji, oh, she won't know. I will keep my affairs hidden.

Kar: a man after my own heart.

Dadaji looks at arjun and arjun rolls his eyes and said "he is karan." Arjun introduces simran and anjali who had already got down from the car.

Dadaji kisses simran's hands and said "you look like the most beautiful lady in this whole universe."

Sim:hayee, thank you. thank you.

Kar: dadaji, see in the night. You will immediately change your opinion.

Sim: karan

Dadaji's eyes soften seeing anjali who is standing closely to arjun and holding his hand. dadaji asks "what is your name pari?"

Anj: anjali.

The door opens from the other side. Dadaji suddenly feels a sudden stiffening in everyone posture. His gaze sees a young girl walking around the car and standing behind karan. He saw her eyes and a suddenly feeling of dj vu enveloped him as he saw the numbness of the icy wall in her eyes.

Dada: what is your name?

Before anyone could reply, she said "riya mukherjee."

Riya bends down and touches his feet and she could feel the surprise and relief of everyone around her. straightening up, she takes a step back distancing herself from everyone.

Dada: come in come in.

He walks up the steps and stops seeing a lady holding a thali and blocking the entrance of the door.

Dada: mrsji, what are you doing?

Dadiji: it seems that with age, you eyesight has also reduced. Can't you see that I am having a thali?

Dada: I can see that very clearly mrsji? But let me tell you that these children are very tired from a long journey and they want to rest not stand around for you to do aarti.

Dadiji: you don't say anything. After a long time my grandson has come home. I will do what I want to do. You don't interfere.

Dada huffed while dadiji performed aarti to everyone. When she reaches arjun her eyes fills with tears and as soon as she performs aarti, she hugs him happy to have him finally home.

Dada: now will you hug him the whole day or at least let them come inside?

Dadiji wipes her tears with her pallu and lets them inside. She said " you all must be very tired. Why don't you all go and freshen up and I will arrange some tea and snacks for you?"

Sim: mrs rawte, seriously it is not required.

Dadi: I am not mrs rawte to any of you. I am dadi. Samjhe ya samjhau?

Simran giggles and said "samjh gayi."

And she sends them to their rooms. Dada and dadiji stands beside each other and watch them go to their rooms.

Dadi sniffles and dada puts her arms around her and said " what mrs rawte. How much you cry?"

Dadi: you don't say anything. After such a long time, juno has come home.

Dada: and yet his wounds are not healed.

Dadi: the girl who was very quite? Who is she?

Dada: her name is riya.

Dadi: do you think she can...

Dada: I don't know bhavna. I really don't know.

Dadi: do you think we should inform...

Dada's face hardens and said "no need to inform him. he has no place in juno's life."

Dadi: he is his father.

Dada: what duties has he done of being a father?

Dadi: he has changed.

Dada: not enough to have him back. I can't lose juno. Not again.

Dadi: it's his choice also.

Dada: not in this matter. It is best if he does'nt know.it is for the best.

Chapter 26

Arjun climbs the steps to the terrace and opens the door. Stepping outside he breathes in the air and feels a calmness settle over him. this was the place he always went to whenever he felt he could'nt handle his father's pressures. Walking around he reaches the corner and feels the saying he had carved out for himself. It was saying he had realized when he was just 13 years old. He traced the saying "my life, my choice." Hearing the terrace door open he tensed and turned to see riya stepping out. hearing him get up she turned and looked at him surprised.

Ri: oh, I did'nt expect to find you here.

Arj: I did'nt know you would come here.

They stood for a moment silent regarding each other. Riya turned and walked up to the railing. She looks up at the sky and said "you can hardly see so many stars from the city."

Arj: yet they are still there. Its just a matter of changing your perspective.

They gazed at the stars for sometime.

Ri: you used to come here when you were small.

Arjun looks at her and riya bites her bottom lip silently reprimanding herself for asking him such a personal question.

Arj: whenever I felt I could'nt handle the pressure of being a rawte, I used to come up here to stare at the stars. It used to calm me down.

Riya looks at him puzzled.

Arj: my father was a businessman. He was very good actually one of the best at being a businessman but was never good at being a father. He expected me to follow in his footsteps never asked just expected. At such a young age, it gets suffocating to follow someone's footsteps.

Ri: when did you decide that you wanted to become a police officer.

Arj: my father used to always make me read newspapers to keep up to date with the business news so to speak. But I used to always end up reading the crimes commited and my brain always used to analyze how this crime can be solved. At one time, there was this suicide but to me it looked like murder. I investigated and found that the husband just wanted to get rid of the wife that is why he killed her but made it looked like suicide so that the police won't suspect.

Ri: the husband got caught?

Arj: I sent my suspicions to the police with proof of the husband's affair. They investigated and found the evidence. And he got convicted.

Ri: when did you solve this case?

Arj: when I was 15.

Arjun looked at riya but instead of shock, he just saw acceptance.

Arj: you are not shocked?

Ri: its you we are talking about. Anyone would expect like this from you.

Arj: and yet, you are not willing to trust my judgement?

Riya looked at the sky.

Ri: its not your instincts I don't trust arjun sir, it's the evidence. You always said the evidence does'nt always say the truth. Then how can you trust the evidence so blindly arjun sir?

Arj: because I trust the people you trust riya.
