Poo Suttral – Unnal Mudiyum Kanna

The smoky-silver Indigo plus glides smoothly into Block 3 parking area of Abishek Gardens. The Febraury weather is cool & pleasant.

"amma"

Priya turns back to look into the clear brown eyes of her son, Navin "enna kanna?"

"Nisthula thoongittama."

Priya looks at her wrist watch "is it 10 already?"

They get down from the car and Priya takes all the carrybags and ACD lifts his sleeping daughter on his shoulder.

"Amma naan konduvarenma", Navin takes 2 bags from her hand.

Priya swells with pride and hugs her shoulder- high son and he responds with a 'chella muttu' on her and both laugh happily.

"ammavum paiyanum konjinadhu podhum. Will someone help me?"

Priya sirippu maaramal puts her hand into her husband's shirt pocket for the doorkey.

ACD lays the child on her bed, covers her with a blanket, switches on the mosquito repellant and the night lamp. After a warm kiss on her forehead he leaves the room, closing the door slightly.

He enters the living room only to find 'Power Rangers' running on the wall mounted LCD. Navin's eyes are glued to the TV monitor. With a disgusted look ACD takes the remote, only to find it not working. Priya in her night dress sits on the sofa comfortably and takes the remote.

"Priya , nee TV munnala utkaarnda namma velai aagaadhu" , gives a boyish grin. "Besides, the remote is not working".

Priya in her sweetest voice, "Navin chellam ammakku konjam battery thariya?"

"kandu pidichittiya ma?"

Priya gives a 'naan unnoda ammada' kind of smile.

ACD sees Navin fixing a battery inside the remote – "ada paavi… thiruttu payal ennaiye emathitaane"

"Navin ! naalaikku exam irukku illa, poi padu".

"ennappa oru vaarama prepare seidhacheppa … konjam neram TV please".

"Nothing doing… poi paduna padu, kalaila seekiram ezhundukanum", ushers a protesting boy into his bedroom.

"Iru Priya … naan tea pottu kondu varen", another impish smile.

When he returns with the tea mugs, Priya is lying down asleep. But a determined ACD shakes her up and thrusts the cup into her hand.

"Naan ethanai plan pottu irukken. Pl don't disappoint me".

"Ennanga…. ennakku romba thookama … varudh….", her voice trails away.

"aiye.. please please da Priya kutti… en thangam illai.. kannu illai , modhalla idha kudi".

Priya gulps down her drink and tries to go back to sleep.

"Avalavu seekiram naan unna thoonga vida maaten", ACD lifts her and carries her into their room.

The alarm rings at 4.30 am. ACD wakes up immediately and switches it off. Pal thecchu, decoction pottu, paal kaachi… has a cup of strong aromatic Saravana Coffee. He makes a cup of 'Boost' and then goes to wake his son. Navin immediately gets up and freshens up. Soon he brings all the books to the dining table and sits next to his father.

Priya is woken up by a sobbing Nisthula. She comforts her child and both of them go back to sleep. By the time Priya gets up again, it is already 8 in the morning.

"Good morning" she hugs the father-son duo , but getting no response goes into the kitchen for her coffee.

She sits on the other side of the table & sees a nervous Navin and an agitated ACD.

"Avana romba paduthadheenga. Navin, afternoon thane exam… nee poi ippo konja neram vilayadittu vaa. I will prepare breakfast. Appurama oru half an hour revision pannalaam". Navin heaves a quick sigh of relief and runs out of the house. She closes all the books and lightly massages her husband's head.

The exam gets over and the father –mother- son cheerfully analyse the question paper and conclude with an evaluation of over 75%. Nisthula opens her big eyes and watches each one of them with a huge smile.

"Appa andha cycleppa"

"Iruda result varattum., appurama kandippa vangi tharen".

On a fine febraury evening ACD gets a call from Navin.

"Appa surprise surprise… marks vandhacchu… 92%".

The doorbell rings. Navin runs out to find a brand new 'hero' cycle. He hugs his father tightly "romba thanksppa". Priya smiles and wipes her tears of joy. Nisthula giggles , "annavoda naanum cycle poven".

That night in their ekantham Priya says to ACD, "Prathamic Hindi examla Neenga 92% marks vanginadhukku Navinnukku gurudakshinai cycle. Vidiya vidiya enna thoonga vidhadha Anuvaadh abyasum, Baal Vaatika vum katthukitteengale .. ennakku enna thara poreenga?"

damn good giri....the subtle teasing, and the clean suspense, allowing the readers imagination to roll a bit and then gently telling them to change their tracks...good really good. bravo.. 👏
