What is a 'mainstream' playback voice?

After Ira's performance today, the judges had a discussion over what type of voice is the "perfect" voice for mainstream playback singing.
Alka feels Ira's voice is best suited for ghazals and selected film songs. She doesn't feel her voice would suit most film heroines. Abhijeet's opinion differed. He feels nowadays there are different types of films being made and hence different styles of songs. There are enough songs in Bollywood to suit "unconventional" voices. Lalit and Aadesh seemed to agree with Abhijeet.

What do you all think? Are the conventional high-pitched, sweet voices best suited for mainstream playback singing now? Or is that a trend of the past? What is "mainstream" playback singing? Singing for top stars and heroines? Lately, its been items numbers and songs such as Beedi, Crazy Kiya Re, Its Rocking and Kajra Re which are topping the charts.

I dont agree with Alka at all... Ira's voice is different but there are songs being made that wud suit her voice... But for yesterday's performance I wud say that her song selection was not good... In that particular song, her voice could not fit... There is enough variety these days to absorb many different voices... And Alka was wrong to say that she wudnt be well suited...

Alka was required to judge that particular performance not Ira's suitability for playback.

And are they choosing only the playback for the hero/heroine or the Voice of India? In an era when the heroine is a Tabu in Chandni Bar or the hero a con-man like Abhishek in Bluffmaster, what does doing their playback mean anyway? And does voice quality denote virtue/vice/leadership?

Yesterday, all Alka's pronouncements and grades struck the wrong note with me.

Those days of a purely feminine high pitched voice being needed or wanted
for heroine songs are gone and in any case, in the past there were all sorts
of voices before Lata and then Alka dominated.

Was Shamsahad Begum a playback singer for heroines?

But I think that there will always be a demand for feminine nigh pithced
voices

Bull's eye!! SVOI is a singing competition and the judges are required to comment on the singing of a particular contestant on his performance and finally pick a winner. Have they by any chance made an announcement about giving the winner any opportunity to sing in any of the forthcoming films? I don't think so. The winner, male or female might make a mark in the music industry but not necessarily in playback singing. So the conclusion is Alka ji was totally wrong in judging the contestants on the basis of their suitability to playback singing and it is actually the music director who chooses a singer for his compositions.

PS: I think most of the judges on all the current music competitions are concerned about whether a voice suits playback singing or not and passing comments on that basis which is unfair towards the contestants. As a result a singer with a unique voice may get discouraged by adverse comments.

In these days of cutthroat competition for slots in playback singing it is not fair to look for only playback singers. Many new faces have been introduced and they were just one-song or a few songs wonders. On the other hand they are making money on stage shows--for example first Indian Idol Abhijeet Sawant.Even one of the most talented Nihira is yet to get more assignments.Shreya,Sunidhi,Sonu stay put, others are forgotten.
Look for allrond capabilities in a singer.

ok i think Ira's voice sounds a little bit like tht of sunidhi chauhan. n i think alka yagnik doesnt really like sunidhi chauhan's voice. i think alka is a bit jealous of sunidhi..cuz she's become very popluar n ppl want sunidhi to sing their songs instead of alka..this is just what i think..it may not be true..i rememba her saying some where that these days those 'husky n offbeat' voices are preffered but 'mainstream voices(which probably means hers)..will always be wanted or something". i guess thats y she didint like ira's way fo singing...cuz when ira first started singing..i thot..omg..her voice does have tht sunidhi chauan kinda thing. n i knew alka wudnt be pleased. i honestly really like listeing to all of sunidhi's songs..even if the songs' not that good..she lends a very nice quality to it n u cant help tapping your foot to it. alka's voice is good n feminine n all but i have more fun listeing to sunidhi.i dont think i wud've enjoyed listeinin to beedi and other songs as much as i did, had sunidhi not sung those songs.

When they say 'mainstream' voice for an actor or actress in the main lead, they are just thinking of lata ji,rafi saab or kishore da.Here i would like to agree with alka. She was right about ira's voice quality.Ira doesn't have a common voice. She can be a good ghazal singer. In my opinion none of of the top actress of today will prefer ira singing for them.Imagine Ira singing for Rani,Preeti or ash! Now,what these people(judges) looking, that is a different issue.Yes,time is changing. When a unconventional singer like Himesh can give playback than Ira should be accepted as a mainstream singer.
