When they say 'mainstream' voice for an actor or actress in the main lead, they are just thinking of lata ji,rafi saab or kishore da.Here i would like to agree with alka. She was right about ira's voice quality.Ira doesn't have a common voice. She can be a good ghazal singer. In my opinion none of of the top actress of today will prefer ira singing for them.Imagine Ira singing for Rani,Preeti or ash! Now,what these people(judges) looking, that is a different issue.Yes,time is changing. When a unconventional singer like Himesh can give playback than Ira should be accepted as a mainstream singer.
Oh - but when Rani, Preity or many other today's actresses speak on screen, do they sound very sweet and high pitched? I dont think so.. In fact, I find Alka playbacking for Rani rather odd.. I would actually prefer a different kind of voice singing for her...
Something was terribly wrong with Alka yesterday (unlike other days), and she went all wrong with marks and comments.. Sure, there are a lot of experiments being done today and so many different kind of voices do co-exist... If we look at male playback singing... Sonu, Shaan, Abhijeet, Udit, Himesh, Atif Aslam, Zubin Garg, Naresh Iyer - all very different kind of voices and all have demand based on the kind of song.. Then why should we only have Alka-ish voices for females? Even Shreya has attempted 'Barso re megha' completely different from her voice and kind of singing... We have some very powerful voices like Richa Sharma rendering 'Jo ab kiye ho daata' and havent we loved it? I think, the stereotype is definitely gone and a voice like Ira can also sing different kinds of songs.. Yes, she did not choose the corerct song on Saturday, Alka could have pointed that out and her range etc... why would she have to see it from the angle of playback singing? As correctly pointed out before, this is something that is happening in all the shows - judges and mentors are constantly commenting ki aapki voice playback ke liye achhi hai ya achhi nahi hai... Whats the point? How many of them are actually going to realise that playback dream? In this age of more shows than talent - chances are indeed rare!
