In the movies, they call it TIA: This is Africa. The sight is appalling. Guns are spitting venom. Innocent people are being killed, as a child soldier declares TIA! The Leonardo DiCaprio starrer Blood Diamond has been just released in the city to packed houses. The movie talks about the eternal conflict in illegal diamond trade in Africa which is indirectly financing the civil war there. Because of its bold subject and imaginative treatment, the film is being spoken of as a potential winner of many awards.
Tele-star Gaurav played a cameo in the film, and he has lucky to have his shots with the lead actors - Leonardo, Djimon Hounsou, and Jennifer Connelly. "It was a 10-minute sequence initially, but a lot of it was cut," says Chopra. However, the actor, who has been a part of popular serials like Aisa Desh Hai Mera and reality dance show Nach Baliye, is more than thrilled with his cameo. "It was great working with perhaps the biggest actors on the planet," says Chopra. More than the on-screen part, he feels that the opportunity which came his way is nothing less than a miracle. "No other actor in India perhaps has been so lucky while getting this kind of a break," he says.
He feels very strongly about the conflict in Sierra Leone, and the bloody trade of diamonds going on. "These illegal diamonds must stop finding their way into the market," says Chopra. The movie has depicted the violence in Africa, and more emphasis has been given on showing how innocents are dying there. "This is probably why the film ended up being more action-packed, and conversation sequences were cut," says Chopra.
Director Edward Zwick comes in for special praise from Chopraa for making a film on such a bold subject. "On a personal front also, I liked working with Ed," says Chopra. So how did he land up with the role? "I was shooting for a Broadway production stage show Bombay Crush in South Africa. One of the leading casting directors of South Africa got me introduced to Zwick and I got the role," he says.
Well, Chopra might have more surprises for us as he is negotiating for another Hollywood film and, this time, for a bigger role. "I will play an Asian living in the UK. With the racism row which has picked up, I am sure the film will be topical," he signs off. Let's hope it also becomes a huge topic of discussion as well.
