i totally agree with all you guys when you say how NRI's are not as they are potrayed in the shows...

You all have given your personal examples... But my question to you all is if every NRI is like you? Is there no NRI who is like the ones potrayed in the show???...

well i know that there are many NRI's here in Canada who i see are like the ones in Samay's family, but there are waaaaaaay more who try really hard to stay connected with their culture and traditions. I just don't find it fair that the majority of the NRI's shown in indian dramas are like samay's family and it gives the wrong impression

and i do think that the NRI's shown in samays family are little over the top😕

Its so good that someone is finally raising this point. Desis in the US are so much more in touch with their culture and proud of it than those in India. Once my family moved here, we all became so much more religious and proud of who we are.
When I went back to India for a visit, it seemed like all the young kids there are wannabes... I wanted to talk to them in Urdu, but they kept responding in broken English... which is very funny btw... anyways its sad that they think its all easy here... which is not.

Infact, when I went back home to get married, my husband's cousins and them were very apprehensive about the whole wedding and how much advanced and "besharam" I would be. They were so surprised that I was actually a LOT more conservative than them.

One more thing.... man oh man how I wish I had a naukar here :)

I know what people in India think about NRIs. I moved tot he US 14 years back. When I went back all my cousins were like "how many boyfriends do u have? what kind of drinks do u drink?" when i told them that i hacen't had a drop of alcohol or i have no boyfriends they were dumbfounded. When i told them last year i was getting married, they asked me if i had bedroom relations with him yet!!! 😡 Disgusting! They said how will i know if i don't test him out first. What the heck is that? People think that just because we live here we have lost all value and sanskaar that an indian should have, they laughed at me because i wanted to wear salwaar kameez during my stay. they said i was a being fake! when they saw me doing pooja every morning they were like of sati savatri! It's so annoying i don't talk to them anymore. by the way one cousin ran off with some guy and lives in a chawl and the other got divorced and married a bar dancer then got divorced again! what rotten luck 😒

i went to india last yr and my dad's friend's daugher is like 18 and she drinks and is proud of it too...i'm like people aren't allowed to drink till they're 21...it seems as though people in india are trying to be western, but in reality, people in america live normal, and sober lives...its not like we wear indian clothes everyday, but we dress up at occasions. the lifestyle obviously here is more different from india, but that doesn't mean that people hear are off track....there are always a few people who go astray, but that image shouldn't represent what NRI's are like

i agree! we are not of loose morals at all! infact, those of us that have been raised in america arent crazy, and some ppl come from india/pakistan and go crazy over american culture... just cuz we're brought up in a different country dosent mean we're crazy 😕

I agree my parents taught me more about Indian culture than a lot of the kids in India.
