Chapter 7
Next morning, 10 am, at the hospital.
Bikram reclined on the bed with a plate of food placed in front of him. Trisha sat on the other side, legs folded, newspaper in her hand. Rajbir sat beside him and helped him with his food. (Not by feeding him but by eating it himself.) Raghav and Swati sat side by side on two chairs, facing the bed.
"The news is leaked. We are on the front page. It's a full blown scandal now."
" CBI chief turns out to be a criminal. An agent shot and hospitalised." Trisha read the heading aloud. She sighed and lowered the newspaper to look at them. "They have come to know what happened that night. The statement of the teacher, the principal and the bus driver has been printed. Rajbir stop eating his food!"
"What? I'm only helping him! He doesn't want to eat all this."
"Get up and exchange places with me."
"Please Trisha.." Bikram whines.
"Shut up!" Trisha snaps. "You guys don't even know what is good and what is bad. I have to take care of everything. I should appeal for a raise in salary for babysitting you three." She pulled Rajbir to his feet and sat on his place with a huff.
"Arre! What did I do? Why are you dragging me in this? I didn't touch his food for once!" Raghav complained. Trisha ignored him.
"We'll get a temporary chief, a recently retired officer, who has been requested to hold the position for a while before a new chief is appointed. Meanwhile, Chauhan's wife has been brought in for questioning and she claims to know nothing of this vidushak side of her husband. Apparently, she has been fooled too." Said Trisha.
"What's with the frown Raghav?" Rajbir asked suddenly.
"Something is not right." Raghav paused. "How can she not know anything about this? How can someone be fooled for so many years? Most people can say if their spouse is lying or hiding something. And this is a big thing. He had to invest a minimum time for his criminal activities. What excuses did he give about his strangely busy schedule?"
"Busy with work maybe?" Supplied Swati.
"Not convincing enough. Tell me, if he gave you such an excuse repeatedly, wouldn't you doubt him? Besides, she could easily enquire about his workload from anyone from the office."
"Maybe he said that he has a business. Showed her fake documents. Would be a piece of cake for him." Said Bikram.
"And what about profits? A business should result in profits. They should have had a higher living standard. Wouldn't his wife ask about that? And we've been to his house once, remember? We didn't see anything that indicated more money than was expected."
"So that means she is lying. We need to interrogate her." Trisha concluded.
"When?" Asked Rajbir.
"Today. Now. Let's go." Said Trisha.
"Oye! What about me?" Bikram sat up straight.
"What about you? You'll be here, resting. You haven't been released." Trisha ended with authority. Then seeing Bikram's pitiful face, she added, "okay, we'll video conference with you."
"Deal." Said Bikram with a smile.
