Here's your friend Mahi bringing you the....

Yep, it's the Discussion of the week! This time we're discussing the importance of the advice of your elders. Do you listen to your elders' advice and take it with you? Or do you not pay attention? Or is it more like "Ek kaan se suni aur dusre se nikaal di"? 😳

Let's think about...

Do you listen to your elders' advice and follow it? Do you think it's useful to learn from their mistakes?

Or do you not care about what your elders' say and you want to experience your own life in your own way and then learn from your mistakes?

Or do you do both? Sometimes you take their advice because it makes more sense and other times you don't because the world is changing and you might have the same experiences that your grandparents did?

Well, have fun discussing!

just a side note, i look at elders like great people with knowledge...I will never disrespect them even if they are wrong..

Y

SOmetimes...I always like to hear thier stories about the past and where they come from. Also their advice is good most of the time, sometimes too conservative. But overall, i think they are smart and we all can learn from them.

Or do you not care about what your elders' say and you want to experience your own life in your own way and then learn from your mistakes?

I think thats wrong..Old ppl have been there done that so they are like the best for advice.

Or do you do both? Sometimes you take their advice because it makes more sense and other times you don't because the world is changing and you might have the same experiences that your grandparents did?

Def both..I dont think i should listen to everything..I mean if meri dadi ma says, "arun you should get married bc ur young"...I say WOW YO..slow down...lol...Back then, my grandparents were arranged, so they got married at a really young age..But now things have changed so I would not do so at a young age..But with religion and how to live life, i think the best advice comes from the elders. Also i think some old ppl are so blessed its like God infront of you, they carry so much wisdom and love...i think the older you get you lose senses, and with that loss, you gain internal senses...Like inner voice...

^ Arun, you said it! I do want to point out what Arun said again that we do respect our elders and just because we don't pay attention to some of the advice they give us doesn't mean any disrespect, it may mean simply that the world is changing around us and our elders may not have had the same challenges that we do have to face today.

I think I listen to my elders with respect. But in a lot of the matters I have my own strong opinions.

For example, my grandparents are a little conservative and they always keep warning me against befriending white guys. Now I think that's really racist and extremely wrong stereotyping so I listen to them but then I am also friends with white guys and I think they are great friends.

There are lots of other petty things like this where my opinion differs from my elders but nevertheless I respect theirs and hope they respect mine too.

Dont worry Mahii, i think all elders think that the younger generations are easier to lose thier culture...
My dadima hates...hates...new bollywood films..She loves the old ones, because their always covered, theres no "racy" scenes etc.. Also the excitment of the new ones is too much, she couldnt even watch Dhoom...im like , "Yo Dadi maa, dehkiye naah ittna sundar bikes aur stunts ho rahe hai"!!!
lol...😆 kidding..But some newish ones she likes , like kuch na kaho, or DDLJ (well its not neww neww, but compared to a 1960's film, its new)...
all in all, old ppl hold special powers i think, their advice is worth more than gold, even sometimes when you think its just worthless..

^ I know Arun, but it gets a little annoying when the elders think that the girls are much more vulnerable to losing their culture and all than boys and that's why boys are given more sort of freedom to mix into the American cultures when girls are held back. Anyways, I just think that that's wrong.

As far as your grandma's opinion on today's movies, I completely agree! I have been thinking about it too and I do think that nowadays people pay more attention on clothes and adopting western culture that they are forgetting their own. I know that some scripts require that girl be modern but by no means I think it requires revealing of any sort. My opinions only.

And even recently we had Rab ne bana di jodi. It proved that the movies can work purely on the script and we don't need some of the 'vulgar' scenes and/or songs etc. to try and make it work.

your right, girls get less freedom...But i think guys lose it alot faster actually, i have some guy indian friends, and they are like totally blind to the desi cultures. My Muslim or Hindu friends, they are so far away from thier religion it makes me a lil sad...But on the other hand, i have some strong hindu, muslim friends, i always like listening to them and hearing about thier stories...

your right, movies these days can be good....

I disagree. One thing that I have noticed in my Muslim friends, that though guys get more freedom than girls-the guys are more conservative. Girls are more flexible to change, but guys are slow and critical. So I guess it depends on the person rather than the culture.

i see your point clearly...i agree as well it depends on the person. Also age might make a difference too, but it does depend on the person.

Oh I definitely agree! Age and a person's nature make a whole lot of difference.

But I have also seen that boys are lot more impatient to be 'accepted' in to the American culture than girls are. And that's why I have seen some guys acting so weird and trying to be "American" that they lose the respect that others have for a person. It's sad but I have seen many guys doing that. They'll smoke, have girlfriends, even take drugs to "fit in" even though that's not what they really want to do.
