Rashika - someone who protects!
DevRashika is a person, mostly a lady from one of the High or Middle societies (of those times) who is given the responsibility of god. U can say she's the messanger of God, live messanger. The lady is completely devoted to her dev and its like she doesnt exist as a lady for men to marry. She is only for god, to pray to him, to get messages from him and spread the signs of god to the people. She also protects god.

If I am not wrong, this is similar to the devadasi tradition.

Basically, the woman is considered as wedded to God, and is entitled to many privileges at the temple. She has a rich repertoire of dance and music and can even dance in front of the idol. Devadasis have been great upholders of art traditions and have transmitted various art forms over the ages.

But the bad part of this tradition is that such a woman is considered to be no one's wife. In many ways, she is a courtesan, and is exploited by the rich men of the town.

This is the reason Manu's bua doesn't want her to become one, because she knows that under the guise of performing temple duties, these women are prone to exploitation by the men folk. Though they are given some semblance of respectability, they are actually considered common property and cannot lead lives of their own or even marry or have children.

And this will also have major implications for their pairing because the prince cannot marry Manu. As she said today while walking on the coal bed, she cannot marry, nor can she love.

well tonight's episode describes a devrakshika as

1. Garurrd Dev and snakes are enemies so devrakshika as to protect Garurd Matt from sarpyoni.. (snake lady i think)
2. She cannot befriend or protect snake or snake lady.
3. she cannot marry and has to spend all life serving the God.

@Amri,
I thought Devdasis (of South India at least) traditionally had children. And it was passed down from generation to generation?

Edit. NM. I see that that paragraph was regarding Manu and the show, and not Devdasis as the above paragraphs.

Yes, they did. I think in the show they might show something different.

I am waiting to see if they explore these things in detail, but considering it's for a family audience- hmm. At least it could present a good obstacle in the lives of the lovers.

@Amri - you are right. Devrakshika is just a different name for Devdasi. They only had this decent lifestyle during their youth when they had rich admirers. This show will probably not show the shameful aspects this practice as it is focused on rebirth and snakelady. I just hope they don't glorify it too much.

Yes, I hope so too. It was just another way in which they exploited women, and that's that.
