Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli has been admitted to Thane’s Akruti Hospital after a sudden decline in his health over the weekend. Reports indicate that the 52-year-old, who recently attended the unveiling of coach Ramakant Achrekar’s statue in Shivaji Park, Mumbai, is stable but still in a critical state. The exact details of his condition remain undisclosed.
Kambli has faced ongoing health challenges in recent years. Fans became concerned after his slurred speech during the memorial event, where he sang for his late coach. Reports revealed that Kambli had already been to rehab multiple times. Cricketers Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar publicly extended their support, suggesting professional help for his recovery.
Speaking about his health earlier, Kambli disclosed a urinary issue that led to multiple hospitalizations. “I was suffering from a urine problem. It just flowed uncontrollably. My son, Jesus Cristiano, and my family helped me recover. One month ago, I felt dizzy, collapsed, and was advised to get admitted,” he shared. Kambli also mentioned undergoing two heart surgeries in 2013, with financial assistance from Sachin Tendulkar.
Kambli expressed gratitude for his lifelong bond with Tendulkar. “Sachin did everything for me. He paid for both my surgeries in 2013. We’ve been friends since childhood, despite ups and downs in our relationship,” he said. Their iconic 664-run partnership for Sharadashram Vidyamandir and appearances in the 1992 and 1996 World Cups remain cricketing milestones.
Kambli played 17 Tests and 104 ODIs for India, scoring four centuries, including back-to-back double centuries. Fans and cricketing legends continue to rally around him as he fights through this challenging time.
