Rahul Dev: My character Prem Singh Barnala Is Completely Innocent Unaware Of His Popularity Among Ladies!

ALTBalaji-ZEE5 series Whos Your Daddy will be streaming on ALTBalaji as well as ZEE5 tomorrow i.e. 2nd April. Who’s Your Daddy stars veteran actor Rahul Dev in the titular role of the Daddy. The actor plays the character of Prem Singh Barnala, a retired Subedar-major, whose son Soggy runs a DVD rental business in Delhi, specializing in providing porn films to the posh ladies of society. 

We at India Forums got candid with supremely talented and veteran actor Rahul Dev who plays the lead character of Prem Singh Barnala in the upcoming dramedy. Rahul talked about his role in the show, what motivated him to take up the character, his journey as a single father and a lot more.

Here are a few excerpts from the interview:- 

First of all, tell us, how are you spending your quarantine period?

My son, my brother, sister and mother are in Delhi and I am here. I could not go there since the day I booked the tickets, the flights got canceled and a complete lockdown was announced. I am utilizing the free time in my hand by doing all the things I could not do before. Most of my time is spent on Twitter, staying updated with what is happening in the world. I also have scripts pending to read. 

Since you are a single father yourself in real life, was it easy to play the character of Prem Singh Barnala?

On-screen things get easier. In real life, though I am completely different than Prem’s character. could certainly relate to the character emotionally, as a father who fears and emphasizes with the situations and wants the best for his child. But apart from that, I could not relate to the character. The story is an exploration of emotions. It is like a journey for Prem Singh Barnala who goes on to explore the relationship with his strict Biji and son, Soggy.

What made you take up this character of this ‘Hot Daddy’ in the series?

I have been known for playing the antagonist most of the time in my career. But back then the times were different. Now as you mentioned Prem as ‘Hot Daddy’, the guy himself is not aware of his popularity in the Delhi colony and his image among the ladies. Speaking of why I took the character is that it was a comic role. I play an innocent father in the show. Comedy as a genre is different than my previous roles.

You have acted in Bollywood as well as Digital. So I would like to ask what would you prefer?

When it comes to mainstream cinema, there is vast coverage. People have been watching movies in cinema halls for years. There are people who do not access to smartphones or laptops, as well as the internet connection. The reach of mainstream cinema is much wider than the digital platforms. You have to keep in mind that to access shows and movies on digital platforms you need a certain kind of phone. You cannot watch videos on a simple phone used for calling or SMSing, Can you? I have met people who have seen me on big screens and recognize me through my films. We cannot deny the fact that mainstream is still very much prevalent and has a larger audience.

Lastly, any message for people who are still not taking the lockdown situation seriously?

I would just like to say, Stay Safe! Also, there are a lot of people who do not have roofs over their heads. What about them? They need shelter in such a critical situation. The government should take care of this.
