Mani Ratnam, Karan Johar & other Indian icons invited to join the prestigious Academy

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the prestigious organization behind the renowned Oscars, has recently unveiled its list of invitees for this year. With a total of 398 new members joining the Academy, it includes an impressive lineup of Indian celebrities, showcasing the growing influence of Indian cinema on the global stage.
Prominent names such as filmmaker Karan Johar, RRR actors Ram Charan and Jr NTR, and acclaimed director Mani Ratnam are among the Indian stars invited to join the Academy's esteemed ranks.
In addition to these Indian luminaries, the list also features other international talents like Taylor Swift, Ke Huy Qwan, Austin Butler, Abel Makkonen Tesfaye (popularly known as "The Weeknd"), and Stephanie Hsu, among others.
The Indian representation extends beyond the realm of acting and direction. The Academy has extended invitations to Siddharth Roy Kapur, a prominent film producer, and Chaitanya Tamhane, an accomplished director known for his critically acclaimed film "Court." Additionally, the Academy recognizes the exceptional work of Oscar-winning composer MM Keeravani and lyricist Chandrabose, who triumphed with the song "Naatu Naatu" from the blockbuster film RRR. Filmmaker Shaunak Sen, whose documentary "All That Breathes" received a nomination at this year's Academy Awards, and cinematographer KK Senthil Kumar, renowned for his work in SS Rajamouli's RRR, have also secured spots on the prestigious list.
Expressing their pride in welcoming these talented artists and professionals, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang stated, "They represent extraordinary global talent across cinematic disciplines and have made a vital impact on the arts and sciences of motion pictures and on movie fans worldwide." This recognition from the Academy further solidifies the achievements and contributions of these individuals, acknowledging their profound influence on the world of cinema.
With this new influx of members, the Academy now boasts a membership of over 10,000 individuals. These members hold the exclusive privilege of voting for the prestigious Oscars, ultimately determining the winners of the coveted awards.
This year's Oscars already witnessed significant accomplishments by Indian celebrities. The song "Naatu Naatu" from the film RRR etched its name in history by winning the Oscar for Best Song. Additionally, Guneet Monga's powerful documentary "The Elephant Whisperers" clinched the Oscar for Best Documentary Short, showcasing the remarkable talent and storytelling prowess of Indian filmmakers on a global scale.
