The much-anticipated Malayalam film L2: Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, has had an impressive start at the worldwide box office. Starring Mohanlal in the lead role, the movie opened to massive numbers and strong audience support. However, its earnings have shown a dip on the second day.

On its release day, L2: Empuraan recorded a worldwide gross of approximately Rs 67.50 crore, making it one of the highest openers in Malayalam cinema. The overseas market played a significant role, contributing around Rs 43 crore to the total.

In India, the film minted Rs 21.5 crore on Thursday, setting a new record for a Malayalam film’s opening. The Malayalam version dominated the collections with Rs 19.1 crore, while the other language versions made smaller contributions. However, on Friday, the film’s earnings dropped by about 45.35%, collecting Rs 11.75 crore. The Malayalam version continued to lead with Rs 10.75 crore, while the Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada versions had minimal collections.

On its second day, L2: Empuraan had an overall occupancy rate of 42.13% in the Malayalam market, indicating that a significant section of the audience is still showing interest. The Hindi version saw a lower occupancy of 4.69%, suggesting that the film’s appeal remains stronger among Malayalam-speaking viewers. Despite the drop in collections, the movie continues to perform well in Kerala and overseas, especially in regions with a large Malayalam-speaking audience. The film's global reach has been a major factor in its success so far.

L2: Empuraan is the sequel to Lucifer and brings back Mohanlal as Stephen Nedumpally, also known as Khureshi-Ab’raam. The film is a mix of action, politics, and drama, focusing on power struggles and hidden agendas. Audiences have praised Mohanlal’s strong screen presence and the film’s high production value.

The movie has been produced by Antony Perumbavoor, Gokulam Gopalan, and Subaskaran Allirajah, with a script penned by Murali Gopy. Apart from Mohanlal, the cast includes Prithviraj Sukumaran, Tovino Thomas, Manju Warrier, Abhimanyu Singh, Jerome Flynn, and Eriq Ebouaney.

While L2: Empuraan has had a promising start, it will face tough competition as Salman Khan’s Sikandar releases on March 30. Given Salman Khan’s massive fan following across India, Sikandar is expected to dominate the box office. It remains to be seen how L2: Empuraan holds its ground against the Bollywood biggie in the coming days.
