Mohanlal’s much-anticipated film L2: Empuraan hit theatres on March 27, 2025. However, the movie soon found itself in controversy, leading the makers to make as many as 24 cuts. One of the biggest changes was the removal of the special “Thank You” credit for actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi. Initially, the film featured a dedicated title card to express gratitude to the Union Minister, but the makers decided to take it down. This move has fueled further debates about the nature of the edits and their possible reasons.
Apart from the credit removal, L2: Empuraan has undergone significant changes in its runtime. The total duration has been reduced by 2 minutes and 8 seconds. The edits include muting certain dialogues, shortening intense sequences, and trimming parts of important conversations. These modifications have raised questions about whether they were made to avoid backlash or simply to refine the storytelling.
The controversy around L2: Empuraan erupted after some right-wing groups objected to certain aspects of the film’s narrative. Amid this uproar, Mohanlal addressed the situation through a heartfelt social media post. He shared that he dislikes being involved in controversies and believes in moving on rather than engaging in unnecessary debates.
Producer Anthony Perumbavoor also spoke to the media, clarifying that the changes were not made under political pressure. He assured fans that these edits were part of the filmmakers’ vision and not forced by any external influence. Additionally, he confirmed that the Lucifer franchise would continue with a third part, titled L3: The Beginning.
Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, L2: Empuraan serves as a sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer. The film delves into Kerala’s evolving political landscape while exploring how power can corrupt individuals. With Mohanlal in the lead role as Stephen Nedumpally, the movie also features Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Jerome Flynn, and Rick Yune in crucial roles.
