Karisma Kapoor’s sudden marriage linked to Abhishek Bachchan breakup, Suneel Darshan calls it rushed

Filmmaker Suneel Darshan has spoken openly about Karisma Kapoor’s personal journey, especially her marriage to businessman Sunjay Kapur. In a recent chat with journalist Vickey Lalwani, Darshan described her decision to marry Sunjay as “abrupt” and reflected on how she struggled to adjust to her new life in Delhi.

Darshan, who has worked closely with Karisma in her peak years, said her sudden breakup with Abhishek Bachchan followed by the swift wedding to Sunjay Kapur came as a surprise. “I thought it was an abrupt decision… something had to do with the stars — not film stars the stars,” he said. Karisma and Sunjay were never publicly seen as a couple before the marriage, which made the development all the more unexpected. “Some things are destined to happen,” he added.

Suneel recalled that Karisma was best friends with Sunjay’s sister, and that bond played a role in the match. However, he hinted that what followed wasn’t what Karisma had imagined. “She wanted to be a domesticated wife… not someone who goes golfing on weekends. She wanted a home life,” he shared, adding that she had no interest in becoming part of Delhi’s high-society lifestyle.

When asked if he had spoken to Karisma after Sunjay’s recent passing, Darshan responded with quiet empathy. “We’ve exchanged this thing… I’ve known the issue too deeply. Right from the first day, I’ve known exactly,” he said. “Some things just need to be buried.”

Describing her new life after marriage, Darshan observed, “She was in this palatial house with endless cars… and it just wasn’t her world.” According to him, Karisma became more of a “trophy” than a family member. “That’s what I heard. She was placed into a world which was not hers. Delhi has its own culture and she wasn’t fitting into it.”

Sunjay Kapur passed away in June 2025 after a suspected heart attack, reportedly triggered by a bee sting during a polo match in the UK. He and Karisma were married from 2003 to 2016 and share two children.
