"Ek haazaron main meri behna hai"
The
classic movie which addressed issues such as poverty and social injustice was immortalized by the epic dialogue "mere paas maa hai". Directed by Yash Raj Chopra, it focused on sibling rivalry and clashing
ideologies. A tale of two brothers; Vijay, a leading figure in the underworld
and Ravi, an honest police officer. When Ravi finds out his own
brother is a criminal, he decides not to protect him and instead wants him to
confess all his crimes and it ends with Vijay dying at the hand of his own
brother. Thus it shows that good wins over evil, even when the fight is between
blood relations.
"A family that prays together, eats
together, stays together". Directed by Sooraj Barjatya, it's the
story of
Vivek, Prem, Sangeeta and Vinod who share a close bonding with each
other.
Vivek, who is not the biological son of Mamta, decides to go on a
self-imposed
exile to maintain peace and wishes to hand over the business to her
son Prem. Vinod and Prem are both hurt by the turn of events and support
their elder brother. Prem lashes out at his mother's decision and
maintains that Vivek's place is
only his and he will just be the support system. Mamta soon realizes her
fault and brings Vivek home, uniting the siblings. The movie depicted
the bond
which went beyond blood relations, showing that relationships are formed
on the
basis of love and not blood.
The biggest hit of 1994 and
another typical Sooraj Barjatya movie, the movie tells the tale of two
brothers
and two sisters. Rajesh marries Pooja while their respective siblings,
Prem and Nisha, fall
in love during the wedding rituals. The sisters share
an in-explainable bond which is strengthened during Pooja's
pregnancy and childbirth. After Pooja dies, Nisha is to wed Rajesh for
the baby's sake. Prem and Nisha both readily sacrifice their love
with Prem treating her like a bhabhi. Rajesh
eventually finds out about their love on the wedding day and is overwhelmed
and simultaneously heartbroken by his brother's gesture and asks Prem to marry
Nisha. The movie ends with Prem and Nisha happily married and looking after the baby as well. It's
truly said - bonds are made in heaven, whether with your love or your
siblings!
Aaina is the story of two sisters, Roma and
Reema, with very different personalities. Naive Reema has always let the
cunning
Roma hog the spotlight. Ravi makes a stylish entry with both the
sisters falling in love with him, but he readily gives his heart to
vivacious Roma,
who after a lot of pursuing agrees to marry him. On the wedding day,
Roma
runs away and Reema, who had put up a brave front ends up marrying Ravi.
Reema and
her love for him blossom under Ravi's attention and they happily live
together. To
their dismay, Roma returns and is disgusted and equally
jealous to see her sister happy. Reema happily allows her sister to stay
at her house while Roma decides to win Ravi back and tries seduction
and committing suicide. Ravi, who has already fallen for Reema,
exposes her and the happy couple carry on with their lives. The song
"aaina hai
mera chehra" was also sung by real life sisters and playback singers
Lata Mangeshkar
and Asha Bhosle.
The showman's finest offering is the story of Ram, Lakhan, Geeta and Radha. The evil duo Bhishamber (Amrish
Puri) and Bhanu (Paresh Rawal) steal the Thakur family's
wealth and kill Ram and Lakhan's father. Ram grows up to be a responsible
policeman while Lakhan, also a policeman, misuses his power and helps smugglers
to become powerful. Both want to avenge their father's death and family
humiliation but have different ideologies, leading to the brothers no longer being on
talking terms. The movie ends with the brothers successfully exacting their
pound of flesh and reuniting. While the movie dealt with the same story and
same concept of the helpless mother and her two sons, the portrayal and the
fresh pairs made it appealing along with some beautiful compositions.
Directed by Karan Johar, this
is the story of Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) and Rohan (Hrithik Roshan) who
are the sons of Yashwardhan and Nandini Raichand. Despite Rahul being
adopted and the huge age difference, the brothers share an unbreakable
bond. Anjali and Pooja Sharma are two sisters where Rahul falls for
Anjali and marries
her against his father's wishes of marrying the girl of his
choice. Rahul is asked to leave the Raichand mansion and he complies.
Rohan, who was studying in a hostel, returns home to find that Rahul is
no longer
living with them and his love for his brother makes him go to London to
bring him back home. The tagline of the film itself states, It's All About Loving Your
Family.Author: Vibha B. & Mayu P.
