The release of Diljit Dosanjh's Punjabi film, Sardaar Ji 3, in Pakistan on June 27 has sparked controversy among Indian fans. The decision to screen the film, which also features Pakistani actress Hania Aamir, has led to widespread criticism online. Many fans have expressed disappointment and labeled the move as "shameful" and "disrespectful," particularly in light of recent tensions between India and Pakistan, including the Pahalgam terror attack in April, which resulted in the loss of 26 civilian lives.
Social media has been buzzing with screenshots of theater listings from Pakistani cities, including Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Faisalabad, and Sialkot, confirming the theatrical release of Sardaar Ji 3 across the border. These images have quickly spread online, providing visual evidence of the film's planned screenings in Pakistan.
The controversy surrounding Sardaar Ji 3 extends beyond its release, with the casting of Hania Aamir also drawing criticism. This comes at a time when Indian film organizations have adopted a strong stance against collaborations with Pakistani artists. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), known for its protests against such partnerships, has reiterated its call for a ban on Pakistani talent, particularly in the wake of the recent terror attack.
Adding to the controversy, the film's trailer is inaccessible in India. Attempts to view it on YouTube result in the message: "This video is not available in your country."
Amidst the controversy, the producers issued a statement, explaining that the film was shot "well before the prevailing situation" and that Hania Aamir was cast before the Pahalgam tragedy. The statement continued, "We had decided not to release the film or any of its promotional content in India until the situation becomes opportune," framing the decision as an act of "solidarity" with the country.
Diljit, who commands a massive fan base in India and overseas, is being called out for continuing to promote the film while remaining silent on the backlash. Instagram comment sections on his recent posts are flooded with disappointment. “This is so shameful, Diljit," wrote one user. “Sardaar ji 3 is going to fail," said another. A third added, “Nothing comes before country."
Sardaar Ji 3 stars Hania Aamir as a ghost hunter, alongside Diljit Dosanjh, who is assigned to exorcise a spirit from a UK mansion. The film blends action and comedy, with romantic elements as Hania and Neeru Bajwa compete for Diljit's affection.
Scheduled for a global release on June 27, Sardaar Ji 3 faced controversy regarding its casting. The Pahalgam terror attack heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, leading to a ban on Pakistani artists in India.
