It was World Mental Health Day on October 10 (yesterday) and given the pandemic that we have all been dealing with, we have come a long way in how we treat mental health for that matter. Bigg Boss 13 fame Shefali Jariwala spoke to India Forums about mental health and how it has come to the forefront, among other things. Here's the quick chat we had with her...

On the increased importance of mental health over the last few years...

Being both physically and emotionally fit is the key to success in all aspects of life. People should be aware of the consequences of mental illness and must give utmost importance to keep the mind healthy like the way the physical body is kept healthy. The mental and physical health cannot be separated from each other. Especially in the current times, since the Pandemic, there has been loss of lives , livelihoods and a fear of uncertainty of future that has affected millions of people.

About how mental health issues have come to the forefront in recent time...

Mental heath is becoming a growing issue . Not everyone receives the help that they need. Unfortunately there is still a stigma attached to it. Social stigma as well as a personal stigma .People are still reluctant to accept the illness of mind because they feel ashamed. They feel shame to acknowledge it and seek help . Mental health cannot be separated from physical health. They both are equally important for a person.

This stigma creates reluctance and shame in seeking help.  The acceptance and understanding of mental illnesses has come a far way from where it used to be, but improvements can, and should still be made. Fortunately a lot of people are now creating awareness about mental well-being. There are so many support groups & resources available online.

As an actor, how do you deal with a low period in life, if and when you have one...

As an actor I have never felt low in my life , but this pandemic & lockdowns did affect me just like millions of people out there. Fortunately, for me, I am aware about how it feels and am not ashamed to talk about it or seek help as my support system is very strong. My friends & family have always been there for me without any judgments.

Also, I understand how I can control my lows very well. Regular exercise, yoga, breathing exercises, really help me regulate my moods. Also, practicing gratitude and immense faith in God keeps me going through the tough times.
