A love narrative that carried on through letters ...a story that carried on in the talented poets' works but didn't exactly pan out in real life. But then Amrita Pritam-Sahir Ludhianvi's love story has continued to live on in public memory.A play Ek Mulaqat that stages a fictional encounter of the lovers has garnered rave reviews both in India and abroad for the lead pair Shekhar Suman and Deepti Naval's class act and also for bringing alive Urdu poetry on stage. Now we hear that we would soon have a film on this subject too in which talented actor Irrfan Khan would play Sahir, Sonakshi Sinha, Amrita and Pak hottie Fawad Khan would enact the role of Amrita's longtime partner Imroz! While the film has entered a legal tangle, still there would be makers who would bring the story alive in different mediums and people who would love to see it, absorb it and keep it alive for times to come...Shades of emotion
Sadly most love sagas in our society meet a tragic end. Such was Sahir Amrita's tale too. What she wrote in Raseedi Ticket would remain an ultimate verdict but it falls in the hands of theater person or filmmaker on what they make out it. Recently a book Eh Janam Tumhare Lekhe, which revolves around Amrita's life too was released. But there she is portrayed in a negative light, kind of holding her responsible for her broken family and her son's sad fate. I see human relationships as very complex and multi-dimensional phenomenon.Marriage is one, but then there come other relationships which are very trying for the two involved and those close to them. We still don't have a fool-proof method, may be with time there will be some formula that would give more freedom or liberty to express human emotion. In current system it's all too unruly. Restraining human emotions doesn't work. As for the film, if the story is in the hands of a sensitive filmmaker it can become an ultimate ode to love or a sensational film pegged at commercial success. One always wishes to see or read whenever something is written about people you can associate with but then you like it or not depends on who is handling this.Surjit Patar, Punjabi poet
Cosmic tale
Sahir and Amrita are public figures, and their story is in the public domain. Artistes have a right to depict them the way they want to even if it's not in a very positive light. As for Sahir and Amrita I relate to, they were the people in touch with the cosmos, loved everyone and everything lovable. To understand their love, one needs to have a broader horizon. They were not the kind to be bound by the restrictions imposed by hypocritical society and lead a mundane life. They are and will remain larger than life and so will be their story.GS Channi, Theater activist
Original take
I have had the fortune of meeting Sahir Ji and amrita Ji on many occasions but never together. Sahir Ludhianvi had a tragic life to begin with. Though much is said and written about his love affairs, if only he would have been little more expressive of his love, he wouldn't had to spend life alone and probably wouldn't have met the tragic end. If there a film made on this story, I would love to watch it and also hope it stays true to the original.SK Punia, culture promoter
The third angle
We have lived our lives very comfortably. Situations came and went by, we kept living normally, little realising that ours too would make a story. In fact, even if you remove our names from it, it's a tale that would find resonance in lovers. Amrita loved Sahir. He didn't reciprocate, what could I do about it? But people write about them still. They have a play in Mumbai which is very popular because Sahir was famous. I have heard of the film in making and if Fawad is touted to be playing me on screen, I couldn't be happier. Amrita was born in Pakistan and wherever the film is made whoever stars in it... all of it is testimony of people's love for her. And I am easy with anyone making a film on it or how they wish to present it. It's not Amrita or me making the film but their own take " how they see it and want to present it. Yes, Harjit Singh has made a film on me. I just wish it was made when Amrita was alive! " Imroz, painter-poethttp://www.tribuneindia.com/news/life-style/hamari-amrita/91163.htmlSonam-Fawad
Who can forget the khatti-meethi jodi of Sonam Kapoor and Fawad Khan in Khoobsurat? It was there infectious chemistry that made the film work at box office, making this jodi cynosure of all eyes. Sonam's mad energy and Fawad's uptight behaviour complemented each other really well in the film. Sonam and Fawad definitely form a cute pair.
