Mariam Qureshi

Pyare Afzal was a love story but not an ordinary story. It was a deeply moving love story of profound and endless love between two souls. When mentioning the best true love stories like Romeo & Juliet, Heer Ranjha, Laila Majnoo, Pyare Afzal would beranked alongside these touching stories. Pyarey Afzal was nothing short of a roller-coaster ride; it was deeply expressive in portraying the deep reality of human relationships- it reminded us of the golden years of classic television. It gave us a wonderful retreat from our daily routine lives and took us into their own world ofrollercoaster of emotions and feelings and tied us with its brilliant ideologies. Khalil-ur-Rahman engaged all the Pakistanis on a great emotional melodrama filled with some of the most memorable dialogues in recent times.

It had a very touching song with very emotional words. People grew great emotional attachment to this song over a few days.

"Jane Woh Kaise Log The Jin Kay Pyar Ko Pyar Mila
Humne To Jab Kaliyaan Maangi Kantoon Ka Haar Mila

Bichad Gaya Her Sathi Daiker Pal Do Pal Ka Sath
Kis Ko Fursat Hay Jo Thame Dewano Ka Hath"

Be it Afzal's catch-phrase "Mere Abba Kaha Kartey Theh..." or Farah's confident "Thamm ke raho...", every interaction between the characters added life to the story and helped take it forward with great sentiments.

Pyare afzal 1 and 2 episodes reviews in pakistan

I was not that interested in watching this drama for two reasons: Aiza Khan seemed to be wearing an entire bucket full of makeup in the promos alone and Hamza Ali Abbasi seems as if he should be riding a horse somewhere or wrestling cattle or some other terribly masculine activity. Still I found myself singing the song "janney voh kaisey log hai jin key pyaar ko pyaar Mila" which is beautifully sung by Waqar Ali, all over the house. Being superstitious I saw this as a sign..well maybe not, actually I was bored witless and decided to watch . Well it all turned out well, Pyarey Afzal has been an altogether pleasant surprise. Both episodes were beautifully produced, directed and acted. Now there is a rare statement.

Afzal is the son of the local Imam played to great effect by Firdause Jamal. Afzal is a bad boy dabbling in charas (Marijuana), gambling on cricket and getting intense love letters from a girl. The poor Imam and his family can take no more and force Afzal to reform. The whole family dynamic at the Molvi household was quite sweet: Anuoshey Abbasi as Afzal's younger sister Arifa, Saba Hamid as his doting but sensible mother were just right. There was a wonderful chemistry between all the characters which facilitated by some deft editing made the scenes of confrontation between father and son very watchable. Aiza Khan and Sana Javed play Farah and Lubna the spoiled daughters of wealthy Shaikh Saheb. Farah is not sure about her impending marriage to Mehtab Chawla played by the adorable Umer Naru. She is supposedly a strong willed young lady who says she wants to study in economics in London while Mehtaab thinks London is only good for shopping and honeymoons. He has so much money he doesn't even have a job which would put any sensible girl off. I say sensible but Farah seems a little light weight in the sense department. She isn't stupid but her plans to avoid the marriage seem doomed to failure as Mehtaab is smitten enough not to mind her confession of secret lover to whom she writes letters all the time. Lubna seems a little cleverer than Farah, perhaps a little too clever. She is best friends with Afzal's sister and may well be the author of all the letters that Afzal receives. The twist is that Afzal thinks Farah is sending those letters though she ignores him at every opportunity.

I loved the way this was shot: the director (Nadeem Baig ) and his Dop have done a fabulous job with Khalil ur Rehman's wonderful script . Hamza Ali Abbasi surprised me; I loved him as Afzal the charming bad boy who still manages to seem a little nave. Umer Naru is simply perfect as Mehtab ( Farah, girl you could do worse ) bringing a lot of nuance to the role ...I fell in love when Aiza turns around to find him standing there waiting for her on the roof in the first episode. Message to Aiza Khan: you are naturally beautiful, so why this much makeup? OK, complaints over Aiza managed to capture the playful, spirited Farah wonderfully. I am not too sure about Sana Javed, perhaps the character is meant to be annoying but at times I wanted her to calm down. Pyarey Afzal doesn't seem to have any particularly deep storyline or social message but it seems like a fun drama with characters that connect. My only complaint so far is the overload on the background score. It is meant to enhance not compete with the story and so far it is treading a thin line which I am praying it doesn't cross. Hopefully, the Pyarey Afzal team has maintained this standard throughout the serial.

It is a tough job analyzing or reviewing Pyare Afzal because the whole thing is such a seamless melding of talents that I don't know where to begin .

The confrontation between Afzal's family after he is caught gambling once again was highlight of the show and Firdause Jamal owned it with a powerful yet vulnerable performance that had me in tears. Normally I run a mile and then another mile from long monologues and heavy histrionics but here I was glued to the screen waiting for each characters reaction. I knew from Manjali that Khalil ur Rahman was a good writer but here in this drama he has honed his craft to another level of excellence altogether . The script is not flowery as I had feared it might be yet it maintains a depth that allows us to connect with the characters every emotion. The best part is the actors are managing to do it justice. In reality a character like Afzal would be unbearable but Hamza Ali has given him the required charm to make him almost likable. I loved his surprised look and concern for Miss Rosy after he learns of her accident. That whole scenario could have been very annoying but all it did was bring a smile to my face.

The cast have great chemistry together, especially Afzal's family. We saw a little less of Farah and when we did she was quite rightly recoiling in distaste from Afzal the lafanga. Farah seemed a little demanding when dealing with Mehtab but she is right on the money with Afzal. I liked her attitude and am beginning to like Aiza Khan a lot more too...but the make-up is killing me softly. Her younger sister Lubna is however a piece of work. Nicely done by Sana Javed , she comes over as manipulative , secretive and a little over smart if not cunning. I am still guessing she is the one posting letters to Afzal as she pays him more attention than is strictly necessary. The story did not move much this week and I really missed Mehtab Chawla but the promos for next week show a storm on the horizon.

Pyare Afzal is a fun serial, where everything is working ...I am just hoping it stays that way and doesn't fall prey to drag or loss of main narrative.

I think I went overboard with the praise last week and now I have to take some of it back . In general this was a good episode : the story moved forward and I got to see some of Mehtab but dthere were some drag factors this week . All the scenes a involving Afzal's family are nicely edited , well acted and great viewing . Hamza Is fantastic as Afzal and makes his character a hero even when he is in the wrong . It's those two awful sisters Lubna and Farah that worry me . I know Afzal is a bad boy but does he really deserve Farah ?As a rule I like strong female characters and that is one of the reasons I liked Manjali. Farah seemed such a promising character , she didn't want to marry Mehtab because he had no job or any skills and was happy to rely on his inheritance for the rest of his life . I thought: here is a girl with sense and principles, but this week she seemed a little crazy . The long convoluted conversations between Lubna and Farah hurt my ears , especially Lubna's ilogical leaps and assumptions .I think I am supposed to find all this cute and ingenuous but all it did was force me to press the fast forward button . I know Khalil Ur Rahman is a fantastic script writer but as Drama Buff says a little more showing and lot less telling would have been useful here.

Ok I cannot believe that Lubna has actually pushed her sister on the road to marrying Afzal , but so far the evidence points to it . I though she was the one writing Afzal the love letters but now she has named him as her sister's secret love it doesn't seem likely . so far these sisters are the most annoying part of this drama . I really hope they don't ruin it . Everyone else has done such a good job that it seems unfair.

Afzal has lost his job but his eloquent parting speech declaring his innocence may well have convinced his oss to be his Father in law . Does that happen ? Can that Happen ? Ok truth is stranger than Fiction so why not , if every premise in every drama was deeply scrutinized it might not hold up either.so I see a storm brewing in which Charming but newly reformed Afzal gets to marry Farah who he thinks( and Farah thinks) he is not worthy of . I tremble for Afzal , what a price to pay for smoking a little weed and a few Cricket games ... Then again a strong willed , high principled Farah without her awful sister Lubna might be the making of him .

Episode 5 reviews

...Ek shahanshah nay daulat ka sahaara laykarhumm gharibon ki mohabat ka uraya hai mazaaq...

(translation: An emperor on the strength of wealth, Has played with us a cruel joke. )

Afzal's friend poetry readings always underline or indicate a shift or an important momentum in the story's progression. It's the second time, writer Khalil-ur-Rehman has employed Sahir Ludhianvi's beautiful woven poetry and introduced it to the narrative. I am assuming the poetry has very symbolic undertones to the connections of events about to occur.

The Shiekh sisters, Lubna and Farah have found an amusement, a distraction of sort in Afazal from their current situation. He might be "lofar, lafanga and number one kamchoor," so far removed from the image they both have of the perfect man they both deserve and should have. Still, he intrigues them and they watch him, anticipate his next move and almost tease themselves with ideas surrounding his sudden and important existence in their lives.

The latest episode picks off from where last one was left off. After the sister's mother informs them of their father's noble intensions of meeting Farah's suitor, a name is demanded and Lubna seemingly under pressure breathes Afzal's name. While Farah pretends to fake faint (the scene a bit too dramatic for my eyes), poor Lubna ends up suffering a theatrical slap from Farah for conjoining her name with "lofer lafanga Afzal." The miscommunication is cleared soon after but the result is that; the phooljhari of praises and sound explanation Lubna provides to Farah about Afzal suddenly intrigues her. In almost a filmy manner, we are also shown, the sisters separately thinking about Afzal. The question still remains: did Lubna write those letters or there is another mysterious women out there?

Hamza Ali Abassi continued on the path to impress me with his fantastic potrayl of Afzal. While the sisters are dealing with their created crisis, Afzal is undergoing his own identity cleansing. This time Afzal is adamant that he is going to continue being on the path of "Sirat-e-Mustaqeem."I was pleasantly surprised to see that Afzal has been awarded a strong character certificate, but is it enough to get him a job without sifarish? Shiekh Sahab ridden with guilt after figuring out the scheme by Miss Rozi, offers an apology to Afzal as well as his job back. Afzal in good spirits refuses this offer. He is resolute in living up to his promise of becoming a better person through his own abilities. Soon Afzal learns that a common man in Pakistan, without big and mighty connections can be harassed in such humiliating manner. Afzal refuses to give up however the poor guy's lunch is interrupted by the crazy and lunatic Shiekh sisters. I am so intrigued to find out what do they want from the poor soul?

One of my favorite scenes from today's episode was the short conversation between Afzal and his sister when she finds the key to his closet yet decides not to open the door and read all the letters. The trust that Afzal has over his sister and how she understands no matter what faltoo kartood her brother does, he does has a sense of self and will be loyal to her and her promise and in turn she doesn't break his trust. It is heartwarming to see such a beautiful relationship played out on screen both in terms of chemistry and portrayal. Well done to both the wonderful actors.

Pyare Afzal is fast becoming a guilty pleasure. I don't seek any hidden deep messages in it. It is testament of a entertaining story, told in a very Pakistani manner. The background music compliments the scenes, the editing is crisp and clear and the drama is moving at a pleasant pace. There isn't much to complain as of yet, hope the momentum continues. Thanks Pyare Afzal team for hooking me and making me very intrigued till now.

And curiosity killed the cat- no sorry in Afzal's case usay muhabbat ho gai!

The grotesque and elaborate plan that Lubna and Farah describe to Afzal not only makes him sweat like a pig and then in most theatrical fashion faint. I mean the level of people pretending to faint in this drama is too damn high! The sister's plan was nothing short of comical although to them, Afzal was solution to all their current problems. They will give Afzal 2 lac in turn of him agreeing to pretend and act out "muhabbat ka drama" with Farah. The "job offer" also comes with hazards and potential dangers as in watching out for abaa's thappars and Bandooq ka nishana and jaan ka khatra. Afzal is comforted little by the fact that Aba ka nishan buhat baykar hai! The conversation between Lubna and Farah was hilarious after meeting with Afzal. These dialogues summed it up for me

Lubna: "Yeh aik shareef ghar ki larki apnay baap ko neecha dekhanay kay liye kiya kiya kar rahi hai"
Farah: "Aray chaloo, abhi chaar din howain hain us ko musalman howay!"
Lubna: "Jab koi naya naya muslaman hota hai na to buhat ziyada musalman ho jata hai"

The solution to all the sisters problems. 100 rakat namaze nafal. Pray to find Afzal's replacement since his job acceptance is still pending!

Poor Afzal is suffering from love malaria and can't stop thinking about Farah. Maybe she is the girl he dreamed about. On the other hand the Chawala household is in full mad swing prepping for the wedding. 50 biscuits, pardon me, bricks of gold and every choori with diamond's embedded in it + Ferrari for mua dekhai. Mehtab's affections know no limit when it comes to Farah, par abba ka faisla abhi baqi hai!

All in all, Lubna's and Afzal's conversation lays out whats coming up. The plan is basically to create a drama around mad ishq and deewangi for each other in front of parents. To end this drama, the final nail in the coffin will end with dramatic revelation that Afzal has been bewafa to Farah all along. I am assuming that moving forward Afzal will fall in love with Farah and he will genuinely love her but to the sisters it will all be a drama. Do share you predictions!

Next week Afzal comes to visit Ammi and Abba! Let the drama unfold!

I am very happy with the way Pyare Afzal is opening itself. The story although predictable is told in such a heartfelt manner and all the actors have done fantastic job in portraying the characters. And no one is probably happier then me knowing that Mehtab Chawla is not easily going to be swatted away - not yet. After all Farah ko muan dekhai main Ferrari bhi to milni hai :P Lets see who finally wins Farah's pyar! - The Ferrari or Afzal?

Last time toh Afzal ko sirif love malaria ho gaya tha, this time bechare ko itna bheegna pada ki saach much bimaar hi ho jayeega...

Well, at least his new project heads' are making him work hard for those two lakhs. What is it about Pyare Afzal that keeps making the smile on my face wider and wider?

Though the sisters aren't smiling as much since Afzal is proving to be a little too seedha for their liking which means they are practically coaching him on everything from posture to clothing to conversation.

Although looks like Afzal has impressed them with a peek into his heart when he tells them "kahoonga dil ki saari baatay dilwalon ke paas amaanat hoti hay, amaanat main khayanat nahi kar sakta"

Also I might be reading too much into this, but I thought the whole scene with the suit was a little clever gender role reversal and maybe sleight of subversive hand with the male is being spruced up to look all pretty and presentable instead of the other way around.

Farah's attempt to back track was quickly shot down by Lubna so now there is no turning around this Loony twosome. So while the kichadi thickens in the Sheikh household, Arifa is acting on suspicions of her own and is heartbroken at Afzal's lies. Her quiet realization and tears were quiet telling about their strong relationship and how let down she feels by this betrayal of trust. Anoushey Abbasi has a quiet gravitas about her and that is put to good use.

Can I just say that we keep screaming our heads off (ok writing in CAPS! ) about the need for dramas to show and not tell and Pyare Afzal is a perfect example of a wonderful telling of the visual story. The tiffin on the table, Arifa finding the circled ads in the paper, Afzal leaving little puddles where he stood, all are nice touches of telling the story in a visual manner. So kudos to Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar, the writer and Nadeem Baig, the director for being able to translate words into visions.

Hamza Ali Abbasi is really doing a tremendous job. From waking up to Farah's phone call, to his smitten dreamy conversation and then snapping back to the matter at hand, he is really holding his own. Helping him along is the sharply written dialogue. The scene with Afzal and Farah's mother was really a nice performance with his endearing muted and respectful returns of her sharp volleys.

All in all, this drama is a refreshing change so looking forward to many pleasant weeks ahead.
