My review of Ashk...😛
I started watching the show with real low expectations given that FK was not happy with his work in it as well as some news items saying that Sarmad had also disowned it... I may end up comparing the show to ZGH, HS or Daastan - pls pardon me because with this team I cannot expect less...😊
First is the OST... nothing disctinctive about that to be written about. I was pleasantly surprised though that the show started with the song "Saason ki mala pe simroo mein pee ka naam...". It is one of my favorite songs..👍🏼. Its soul stirring! But this song did not have much to do with the show... Maybe this was shown to depict the love between Mehru and Bilal.
Next is character analysis...As the characterization and development of the characters is the biggest flaw in the show... none of them are consistent!
Mehru - As I have mentioned before too, was supposed to be a mature and thoughful character. So I did not expect her to accept and have an affair with Bilal knowing fully well that the society will object to it. STill accepted it thinking that love is blind and dil par kissi ka zor nahi. Later on in the show, it is revealed that she married him so that she could serve the society by staying in the same village. This left me completely confused... However, I liked the maturity of love between
them. Mehru is shown to be mahaan but I thought she was too selfish...she wanted to eat the cake without making her hands dirty!!!
Zaibu - though she is shown to be a free spirited girl, she is emotional and honestly her characterization was more logical. She marrying Rohail to avenge her sister's broken marriage and then later cming to know of the truth... Her reactions and actions made more sense... Except not sure when she fell in love with Rohail or for that matter why said that she just wants a corner in his life.. I found that to be a very bad viewpoint... Thankfully it did not turn out to be that way
Rohail - He was the most confused character of all... Thought he cared most for his mother, actually acted as per Maliha's wishes and had Zaibu in his heart all the while... Torn between the three women in his life, I am surprised how he managed all three for so many days and months.. He must have had superhuman skills to balance three women!!!! I could understand his frustration with Zaibu first and then his mom because she was taking Zaibu's side but did he really have to go and start living with Maliha...??? There was only one consistent thing about him - he was reluctant to divorce Zaibu and he stuck to it till the end...Thank god for that else I would have kicked myself for watching the show. Also unable to figure out how he fell in love with Zaibu in the end? I mean he read her diary and did nothing and then some days later just let madiha walk away from him
Madiha - the less said about this girl, the better it is. I understand her love for Rohail but did she have to really mess with his life like this??? I hated her for most part but then felt sorry in the end when she is unable to get Rohail. She should have understood that Rohail was never hers and why did she keep trying to draw him to her all this while and then suddenly let him go in the end. If her motive was to get Rohail, he was hers minus the divorce... so she wanted more and not just Rohail.. Makes sense too, else she feared that Zaibu might return back to claim her place in his life... But she let me go off very easily in the end.
Have confusion about Rohail and Maliha's relationship... why he just living at her place or did they have physical relationship as well... not that it matters much.
About the other characters
I could not understand what they wanted to show through Dinga and Ajjo story... First I thought how Rohail and Zaibu's story was completely opposite of Dinga-Ajjo, but was left extremely confused in the end... Also did not understand why Rohail says in the end that Ajjo got her Zaibu.. Also not sure what they wanted to show as per Bilal and Mehru's story... They were unable to show the intensity of their love. In ZGH, all the side tracks were linked to the main track and all dovetailed into each other in the end, but this one was not like that.
Also too much attention was paid to Dinga-Ajjo story, which was not required. Or am I missing something????
In terms of acting, I will just mention Fawad's because really I watched it for him. In terms of the role, it was different from the romantic portryal in Humsafar and have him the chance to show some other emotions - anger, frustration etc at length and in detail. Maybe this is the reason why Fawad chose this role but the screenplay did not help the cause of the show!
