Ufff... the suspense. I exist on IF for the sole reason of stories.i live for these. Looking forward to the update
Bohot suspense hai re baba bada maza aayega
Parakram didn’t change at all in these years- the same high bars, same energy of cadets and officers as they walked in and out of the building, the scent of patriotism and determination to do something for country.
Just, people changed.
Sanjana looked at the building, then quietly Sighing to herself turned to look at Sid. He was looking at the building too, but the moment he felt her eyes on him, he shifted gaze and cleared throat.
“Driver will be here in an hour “
“You don’t have to.” He shook head at her reply. All her life she had prided herself on being fiercely independent, so tough that people often mistook her for being icy. Sid looked past that since the beginning, and she had allowed him pieces of her over last few years. Still, old habits die hard. She never had anyone waiting for her in house, never had someone who would want to know her small, silly dreams and try to fulfill her big ambition. She often wonder to herself what he saw in her or how he even fell for her.
The worst part is this decision that she took is rattling the very core of them.
She remembered what papaji said. “You know him. Give him time. No, don’t try to explain yourself, you shouldn’t have to. He’s my son and he loves you too much. He will come through, please don’t lose faith in him.”
“Sanju!” hearing the familiar voice, her head turned. Faizuddin Siddiqui, her once upon a time senior stood there, with that familiar grin on his face which tugged at her heart. She got out of the car and shook hands, looking over her shoulder at Sid.
He won’t come out of the car.
Surprisingly, he did. Faizi moved first and the men embraced warmly, “Kaisa hai?”
“Sab thik.” Sid’s smile was genuine. “Nik kaisa hai?”
“Arre ab to rockstar banne ki taiyyaari hai janab ki” Faizi let out a hearty laugh, “He wants to be a singer like his mom. Picture dekhega?”
“Sure.” The two men chatted between themselves, Sanjana looking on fondly. They were very similar in Nature, and despite their difference in hierarchy they clicked. Faizi was Sid’s confidant when Monami drifted apart for their own benefit, and Sid was like that friend with whom one can be careless, without any burden. Sid had that effect, many didn’t bother looking past the habitual lying, infuriating smirk and penchant for brewing trouble. A 6 year kid stuck in the body of 20 something, Karan sir used to say …
As if on cue, a jeep screeched into halt. Sid stiffened, remembering the sound very well- how many times he raced against that monster as punishment due to some wise crack remark he made?
Karan slowly descended from the jeep, his smooth face as usual betraying nothing. Faizi’s smile waned a bit, but he gave a nod in greeting. Sanjana was enthusiastic, and some of the hardness from his face wiped out. She had barely gotten two lines out when Sid clapped the back of Faizi’s shoulders, squeezed her hand and bade them goodbye.
Karan didn’t exist for him.
It was shocking to see Col Batra- he looked fragile, weaker and worn-out somehow. Sanjana glanced at her former bosses once and saw similar expressions in their faces. She didn’t know if it’s work, Mrs Batra’s rapidly deteriorating health or something else.
It’s a rumor that he’s taking the voluntary retirement to look after the mrs.
He gave a gist of their mission- there was an active warzone somewhere in East ladakh and the gunfight was on its 17th day. There were casualties on both sides and government wants to end it quickly, of course- public emotion was at all time high, there were threats to internal security and world was watching India as to how it will handle it. They won’t waste anytime- 47 hours from now on they will leave for Ladakh. Karan will handle 5 company of soldiers as commanding officer, Faizi will co ordinate between warzone and land, and Sanjana will intercept any and every radio transmission for secret messages.
“Also, I had a news to share.” Batra said once the briefing was over, “You all remember Major Rawat, don’t you? Karan will know, he served with Param.* At their nod he sighed, “He was martyred yesterday in a surprise breach of ceasefire along with 2 other soldiers. His body will arrive tomorrow, informing you in case you would like to attend the funeral.”
A stunned silence followed.
Sanjana always wondered how, among the three of them, Faizi was always the one who shook off fear and worry and assumed the role of a comedian to make light of situation. Karan sir is always the go getter one, looking for ways to fix a problem in his disciplined, controlled way. Sanjana herself is a chaotic person, lashing out at people to hide her own issues. Faizi never let anything faze him- death, injury, tragedy.
Heartbreak.
So of course he is the one teasing her not 10 minutes after they were done with meeting. “I always wondered why you didn’t take his last name.” comically, he added, “Sanjana Ganju.’ Saying that, he burst into laughter.
She shook head, “Kya saabji.” But she remembered what Sid told her years back
Koi jaroorat nahi hai mera surname lene ki. Arre …ikkisvi sadi hai, ye kya rule hai. Also, mera last bame tum pe suit nahi karega, you are… you are more … umm…. Different. Yes. Also the amount of paperwork need to change your last name, thank you very much!
“By the way,” Faizi became serious, “You ever spoke to your father again?”
She gave a sad smile in return, head shaking.
“We are meeting like what, 4 years later?” Karan nodded once at the question, wincing internally at the guilt creeping up inside. “Tum to pahado mein chale gaye saab. If I knew you any lesser, I would have thought you want to become the youngest decorated office and dethrone your brother.” Faizi chuckled.
Karan rolled eyes fondly, “So Faizuddin Siddiqui, what’s going on in your life these days?”
“Oh, pretty normal routine. 9-6 job, Saturday Sunday off. Desk duty zindabad.” The former blinked in surprise, then he was hit with a forgotten knowledge he had buried deep in his head. Faizi probably realized his folly judging by the sad look on his eyes.
To change topic, Karan cleared throat, “I wonder why col sir called me. I am a soldier, not a leader. Why we three?”
Faizi laughed again. “He wanted just you, me and Sanju is just side character.” At the former’s stern expression he smirked, “I had a thought- what if he brings back everyone from old days? I think that’s too outrageous to hope, but at least Monami can come back?”
Karan went rigid at the name.
“You know, she has become a war doctor now.” He didn’t- he actively tries not to look up her name on internet and hear anyone utter that name. “Seems like both of you trying to find something amidst gunfight and screams. If you find it, let me know.”
“Stop it Faizi “ His voice went hoarse. “You are not a side character.” That point was easier to focus on….only if he knew….
“But I wasn’t a good trainer either.”
“Who said?”
“Our past.” The emptiness in his words made Karan’s heart ache. “If I was a better trainer, I could have prevented a lot of things. Hearts wouldn’t have been broken that bad, there wouldn’t have been misunderstanding. Some people would have been still here.”
Karan stood rigid, his heart hammering in chest. Faizi stood on the other side of their old training room, his posture hung with old wounds. Unable to help himself- cause this is something which led upto his nightmare, but like the stubborn man he was, he wanted anwers.
“Do you blame me?”
Karan, mera bhai. Tu bohut ziddi hai re…pata hai tujhe?
Faizi turned to him, a broken smile on his face. “My loyalty towards you won’t let me.” Wiping his face quickly, his face lit up in a huge grin the next second, “I didn’t show you the pictures, did I? Nik is growing up so fast, dekh na.”
Karan didn’t know what was more shocking- the abrupt change in conversation, or how fast Faizi now managed to fake his expression.
Oh you continued good
