My dear Donjas,

I seem to have run out of words to thank you for taking such intelligent interest in this series of posts. A writer, amateur or professional, is like a plant that needs the sun, so I too need feedback if I am not to feel that I am making a speech to an empty auditorium! So thank you for always being there for me, and for your unfailing support and the warmth of your praise, which is all the more valuable because it is logical and convincing.

My comments here are in blue.

Shyamala, What a beautiful analysis of a truly sublime episode. You did justice to the three main scenes, I read your analysis with relish. Thank you especially for liking this one so much, for it was somehow difficult to do. Perhaps that was because the material was so lovely but also so insubstantial.

In fact I liked it so much that I am in a philosophical mood today. My two points-

Point 1- Beauty lies not only in the mind of the beholder, but it is also a product of circumstances. We watch the sun set everyday, it hardly affects us and then wham!, on a certain day we are mesmerized. On that day the shadows are just right, the clouds are in the right position and the sunlight properly diffuse.

I would like to think that our Jalal had a similar once in a lifetime moment. If you add to the mix, the excitement of the chase and the obvious danger to life, the impact of the moment is even more pronounced. Beautiful women may come and go, but that magic he now associates with Jodha.

I agree with this whole-heartedly. Just as beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder (and in that palki scene it surely did!😉), so too magic is largely a matter of timing. Plus here Jalal seems to have been pre-conditioned to be dazzled by Jodha thanks to the OTT praise of his voluble sainik!

Point 2- Jalal is an Emperor. He can get almost anything he wants, but not Jodha. In the back of his mind he must know that. Even if he wins Amer, he must know that circumstances are such that he won't get Jodha. And that knowledge makes him all the more determined. The loftiest goals are for those who already have everything else.

If Jodha had been dressed in Mughal clothes, it would not have affected Jalal so much, but because she is a Rajput princess, an unattainable woman of that perfect moment, the obsession takes root.
Exactly. It is the things that are hard to get that are valued the most. Apart from the first point you have made here, if Jodha had been in Mughal attire, she would have looked quite pedestrian. That never seems to suit her somehow.

When Jodha's anklet falls into the fire, he does not immediately plunge his hand in, to retrieve it, he lets it get hot, so that when he finally puts his hand in the fire, it hurts more. But he wants that, he needs the pain.

I had not thought of the point that he deliberately waits before he moves to retrieve the paayal, but you are right. There is always a certain amount of masochism in any obsession.

Jodha Akbar Episode 5&6

My Note:

A Beauty of Eastern Culture

Gangaur festival atmosphere that seeks to built by CV / director is good enough, but perhaps because of limited funds, the decorations seem rude and did not detail. However the atmosphere is festive, colorful attractions and activities adequately represent the excitement of a festival. I really admire the celebrations of the community in eastern culture than western culture. Eastern culture is very rich in tradition, style, and color plus magical impression in every activity.

Yes, the whole Gangaur set looked a bit tacky, but even so, the crowds and the costumes and props for them must have cost more than Ekta had bargained for, which was probably why they cut back and situated most of the future scenes in the Agra palace!

One more thing I like about Indian TV Serial is every character has they own background music even when she/he was sad, happy, and angry. Perhaps it helps to establish an atmosphere in every scene so that the actor/actress are not required to be express well.

This is there in Western classical music as well, and the signature tune for every character is different. Thus, in the Russain composer Tchaikovsky's Peter and the Wolf, there is one signature tune for Peter and another for the wolf.

The Artworks

I love to watch, whether movies or television series. For me, it is my refreshing activities other than photography. For me, watching the same activity when I enjoyed to observe a photograph or a painting. It is a work of art. A work of art made with passion, taste, careful, and detail. I note this serial cinematography has less or no attention to these things. Ok, we see one by one.

1. Scene when Jodha was decorated statue of god Shiva and goddess Parvati, her grandmother (she's widow, right?!) looks very pretty with complete make-up and wear complete jewelry like RajMatta compare with perform RajMatta Kunthi on Serial Mahabharat. But she is in white, which seems to be her sole concession to her widowhood. I adore Dadisaa!

2. Scene when Jodha with a group of Rajput lady was archery. One of Rajput lady try archery and failed. This scene makes my eyes hurt because the co-actress are not getting a good referral to execute the scene. When Jodha take a bow, the bow its her taken with the bow she's used to shoot UNEQUAL. Maybe I mentioned the things that are trivial, but actually it is very important for all the end the result of a scene. But my eye pain relieved, when a scene Jodha and Suryaband Singh, Jodha was watching a row of bracelets. The director really spotlight the beauty of her eyes.

I did not quite understand this. I must watch that scene again. I thought it was only Jodha at the archery stand; her dupatta slips off as she is taking aim and Moti replaces it and covers her head properly,

3. The use of stuntman / Double Body / Body Double, maybe in episode 5-10 unused. At first I did not care for the use of DB, for me it does not matter as long as it is used properly, but after a long time I could not stand because of differences in gesture and other things more clearly visible. I had time to protest, when GOD TRACK, scene when Jodha applied ointment to Jalal hand's. Paridhi using a DB, I clearly noticed that Jodha's hand has a tattoos. Since when Jodha has tattoos on her hands.

4. About the jewelry, no comment when I compare it with the Mahabharat, Jodha Akbar is certainly very far away.

5. Storyline, Shyamala Di, if The CV writing the story day by day, then we will never get a good storyline. Too bad.

Well, my dear, maybe I was exaggerating when I said day to day, but it looks like it was at least week to week, according to the TRPs!

Defense Mechanism

Shyamala Di, if you write a problem between Jalal-Hamida Bano is about Child Psychology's problem, then I get the reason why Jalal always claimed he did not have heart. Longing for the love of mother and father, which at first he showed in to those who nurture him or who are nearby (Maham Anga, BK, one of his uncle I forgot his name), but slowly he pushed it far below his conscious. This was his done as a way to survive in the midst of a hard upbringing from BK and Maham Anga, and scorn / torture from his uncle.

Adore of Jodha

AScenes and dialogue between Jodha and Suryaband for the first time, for me is determine who's Jodha when she communicates with men, why Suryaband and later Jalal adoring her a lot. This scene clearly show how's Jodha play hard to get. She always has argumentation with her interlocutor.

Yes, and she must always have the last word, and also she is NEVER wrong! It does not even occur to her, in the present case, that she is trying to wreck all of her devious father's siyaasati chaals to protect Amer in order to get Sukanya what she wants. No concern for the big picture at all. She does not even consider Suryabhan's own feelings, only what her mahaanta dictates!

Bipolar Vision

Shyamala Di, sorry if I use the same term "bipolar" because actually our unique couple are already interconnected when they hear their name.

Jodha has the vision to carve her name in history and "change" Jalal's life completely (in Jodha's mind is to kill him) though indeed she will "change" Jalal. Scenes Jodha-Old Moti, in my opinion is a very lively scene. Jodha fiery eyes and vengeful anger to Jalal offset by calm voice, attentive eyes and a gentle rebuke from the Old Moti build a scene little by little towards a peak when Jodha finally submit the Pratna to the Kali Ma. Gesture and voice both support each other well. Forward we're not meet this lovely scene again after the presence of New Moti..

Jalal has a vision to make history with his sword to conquered the whole of Hindustan, especially his obsession with Amer. I love the expression for the first time Jalal saw Amer from the top of the hill and take a handful of soil and greetings Amer. Rajat execute the scene very well.

Shyamala Di, forgive me for being late to writing my notes for episodes 5-6, I decided to write 2 episode per note. Hope you enjoy my write. Thanks for the compliment to my previous writings

Without you and a few others, I would have shut up shop last week itself! I love your comments and the fresh perspectives they provide, and then again, which writer is not delighted with such lavish but intelligent praise!

As I wrote above to Khushi, it is not easy to do daily posts, but the real problem for me is that there is not enough of a readership and even less of comments. Maybe I am spoilt by my earlier stint in the JA forum - we have talked of this earlier - but my dear Donjas , a writer needs feedback. Not necessarily praise, but comments and critiques of the onscreen material and what I have written. Nowadays, only about 4/5 readers write in, and it is like making a speech to an empty hall!

What do you think we should do about the accessibility issue? I always give the live links to my posts, as you know, and the reader can come straight there, so access should not be a problem. Moreover, judging by the amount of off topic stuff that is tolerated here, we are, so to speak, safer here from thread closures and other hassles than in the far more strict JA forum!

I had, at the beginning of this series of posts, PMed all my old regulars readers to see if I could get at least half of them back for this series. It does not seem to have worked, alas!

Shyamala

I believe, response will be better in the regular forum. Folks who come to the forum for other things will chance upon your posts and become avid readers, like myself. The forum has seen many newcomers since you made your last series of regular posts. Besides it easier to navigate, because people get some free time and like to comment on all things which interest them and usually they are close by. So no need to jump forums.

As for censorship, things have gone quite lax there since the serial ended, otherwise I would have got another 20% warning by now.

I advise you to atleast try it. We have nothing to lose. If this too fails, so be it but atleast give it an honest try . Your effort in making the post will be the same. All those who follow you here will follow you there too.

This place is too out of the way. Besides, we agree that the first 100 episodes of JA was something unique, let us keep the faith for a few months, after that we all go our separate ways.

Thank you so much, my dear Devki. I was a tad uncertain about this post, and as I have noted above, it was difficult to do because it is not easy to dissect magic. I am glad I was able to put it across for you.

Beautiful analysis!

The whole ambience in the village is so magical with the muted lights and the music. Give me this over the cold freezing Swiss Alps any day. How Yash Chopra could make those actors romance each other in such a hostile environment is beyond me.😕 Because they knew it would pay off for them in the end! 😉But Yash Chopra's stuff is nothing to what Boney Kapoor made Madhuri Dixit do in Pukar, romance Anil Kapoor wandering around an Alaskan glacier in a sheer blue chiffon!
Jalal-Choodiwala: The Choodiwala had this totally confused expression on his face,"is this guy telling me the truth or is he plain cuckoo??"😆😆 Not a choodiwalla, my dear, but a churiwala, who makes knives.
The first look: The authority with which Jalal strides back to get a look of Jodha, totally Mr Cool😎and then he cannot take his eyes off her. Totally mesmerized...
He is so fascinated, so taken in as if he is hypnotized. And can he look any more handsome than he did today??
At the bawdi: A lot of things were a little confusing for me in this part.
One: I don't know how Surya just stood there like a khamba as Jalal came in between him and Jo's palkhi. I mean, this stranger is standing in front of his Mangetar's palkhi, staring inside and this guy just stands there doing nothing? Very strange. May be Surya was high on Jo's beauty.😆 Well that is a good an explanation as any, for I can never make out much from his face, which looks as if it was made out of plasticine!
Two: How the heck could Jodha see Jalal's reflection in the lake when he was standing so high up on the steps. Is that possible? My query is genuine. Not being a smart alec here.😊

Yes, she can, provided she is far enough away from the bottom of the steps on which Jalal and
Suryabhan are standing. Then the angle of reflection will be ok. The line of sight is correct for that, as can be seen from the shot of all three of them in a single frame when Jodha is next to the water, at the bottom of the steps she has descended.
Three: In that bheed of women, how did Jalal know that the payal belonged to Jodha?😕 Now this is a very valid question, for there were about 5 women there. But it was a rich, gold paayal, so by a process of deduction, Jalal would have guessed that it was that of either Jodha or Sukanya for it is clearly a young woman's paayal. Now Sukanya is standing at the right side of the puddle, and Jodha is plumb in the middle as they all troop off. So the paayal being found in the middle of the puddle, it must be Jodha's! There, that is the best I can do!😉
The last scene of Jalal was the best. The play of different emotions on his face, the casual way in which he throws the payal up in the air and catches it...he wants her but really just as a possession nothing deeper than that. At least not at this time.

That is what I tried so hard to convey. The main emotion that pervades him at this stage is a raw possessiveness. That is why, in the scene where she is preparing to descend from the palki and Jalal is standing between her and Suryabhan, his face is so stern and almost angry. I have commented on this in my post;

OK, I will try and persuade Mandy to move this whole thread to the regular JA forum as is.

Or do you think I should post each episode analysis as a standalone post? That might actually be the best, and also easier for me to keep track of the responses and reply to them.

Mandy, are you listening? What do you feel about this? Maybe I should post each of these episode analyses as a separate post, just as I used to do. What say?

My dearest Mandy,

What a lovely set of comments! Thank you so much, for as I have noted above, it was somehow difficult for me to do this post, with its gossamer thin, magical material, and it is reassuring for me that you feel I have managed to put it across.

Thank you for that wonderful sher, a charming addition to my collection. But then you have such a treasure house of quotable quotes from the Urdu, rivalling only Adiana's!!

And just as much for adding Munni's gorgeous photos, so that the readers can check what I meant by calling the shot (as Jalal is looking up at the palki), priceless, and where he looks stern and almost angry as he stands between Suryabhan and Jodha alighting from her palki.

It is a wonderful thing, to have these photos to illustrate my text. Can you explain to me how one pastes them in there? Then the next time I am describing an expression of Jalal's and if Munni has kindly provided the correct photo/s, I could make my text an illustrated one!

Yes, that Krack cream crack was a wicked one, was it not!😉 Just ignore it!

Yes, my dear, but where? Here, or in the regular JA forum? I think the latter, for this place is meant for ALL the serials being shown on Zee Anmol, and any standalone posts would be lost in this khichdi!

Hello Aunty,
I dropped into say that I am loving your posts and please keep them on. I do read your posts diligently after watching the episode (either at 8:30pm or the repeat). However, since my semester started this Monday, I have been unable to respond/provide my views on your post and the episode. I would love to participate in the interesting discussions going on but for now I'll have to be content as a silent reader. Please bear with me.

Dearest Shyamala, I am sorry for my inability to respond to your daily threads consistently.
You have asked for an honest opinion on doing a daily post and based on the effort you put in I believe you deserve one. I personally find it hard to keep up with a daily post, because due to the time difference and my lengthy work day , by the time I carefully read your post you have already moved to the next day ( I myself am 3 episodes behind now😭). I would find it easier to respond to a weekly post like you did in Mahakumbh. It gives me time to respond on the weekends when I have the most time.

Another reason dear is somewhat decreased interest in the show itself. As I mentioned to you in the beginning, I have no interest in re-watching the show and so far I have only watched the beginning scene at the Makbara. Also this whole Suryabhan saga is just not appealing enough. I come to this thread solely to enjoy your writing and relive my memories through your delightful posts. I always learn something new ( like the delightful Ramayan analogy😉) when I read your posts and intend to follow you where ever you go on this forum.

This is ofcourse my personal view and the rest of the gang may want a daily post. the rest is up to you and your health dear. You could try what Donjas suggested but I am not sure posting on the main forum will increase response as it is inundated with FFs

PS. I cannot tell you how sorry I am about this whole discussion on India's healthcare system. My single lament on the death of Basanti Devi and the underlying poverty issue blew over into a completely off topic discussion on India's healthcare system. That is the only reason I did not respond to your last response to me ( i did like the post). It was never my intent to compare the two systems. I am sorry and will be very careful in the future😕
