I see a discussion on Hrithik v/s Rajat Akbar

To be honest i gave a damn about Akbar till Hrithik became Akbar. I had watched Mughal-e-azam Akbar and Anarkali Akbar(the old ones) and the Akbar Birbal Akbar etc where Akbar was this aged pot bellied patriarchal emperor. Compare those Akbar to the romantic Salim and Shah Jahan in movies and serials romancing either Anarkali, nur jahan or Mumtaz, Akbar never was in contention.
But suddenly with Hrithik playing Akbar, here was a different aspect of Akbar. I always read Akbar was a feared warrior, great emperor etc but viola suddenly he had become young, romantic, soft, obedient son, subdued younger brother etc.
I mean who can imagine Akbar smiling at his foster father Atagah and Atagah patting him on back showing fatherly love- i mean really the dreaded warrior Akbar becoming a obedient son? who had ever imagined that
There is another scene that shocked me-Akbar kneeling at Maham's feet asking sorry for killing Adham oh really would real Akbar be like that? that too when adham had almost killed him a few hours back?
One more scene was initially when Adham shouts and behaves rude to Akbar saying you are nothing without my mother, i am more fit to be emperor than you instead of getting angry or wild Akbar just says how can i allow you to continue as governor after all the killings you did bhaijaan?
These scenes left me wondering who was the real Akbar? was he an dreaded warrior like the text books, was he a botbellied aged emperor of story books laughing at birbals jokes, was he the thundering akbar of mugahl e azam for whom his sons tears never really mattered over duty and respect
or
was he this loving foster son to a daima?
was he this accomadating younger brother to milk brother adham?
was he the caring, hesitating lover to jodha?
was he the respectful and caring son to hamida?
what was he?
So Hrithik's potrayal brought out so many questions in ones mind and raised curiosity in younger Akbar.
Now i come to rajat Akbar- yes he is a good actor, but as the time went on his role became like a wife's husband a hen pecked husband rather than a strong emperor that a MEA, Jodha Akbar, Anarkali etc portrayed. Amitabh Bachchan is a great actor but he cannot save a mard, SRK cannot save Ashoka etc so only a story guarantees success not an actor in a movie/serial. An actor can only create initial buzz and hype the rest only story and direction can do. JA failed there. It had a great cast to attract eye balls but story floundered big time and so did direction which led to its downfall.
Hrithik's Akbar had everything a eye catching cast i mean Aishwarya as Jodha(the best Jodha in terms of looks and royalty) Hrithik as Akbar(the greek God with good acting skills), a consistent good logical and historically relevant story( majority story was historical) and good start, middle and conclusion. Hence Ashutosh JA shall be remembered as it was the first to bring out tale of a young Akbar. But definitely it shall not be that famous as Mughal-e-azam that was voted best hindi movie of all time.
As far as serial JA, it shall be remembered for Rajat's acting and the Akbar-Jodha romance and chemistry but how long is the question?

Prem in one you saw AG's Akbar that was to play to the young romantic females looking for their knight on the white charger
And here you saw EK's Akbar who has to ultimately kneel before her brand of Nari shakti mahaanta

Attagirl, Devki! Spot on!🤗

Akbar was later remarkably concerned about the conditions of life of women. See the part I wrote about Akbar and Sati in my earlier thread of Reminiscences of Rajat's Jalal, in part 3. Here is the extract:

Akbar and sati: This is all as far as the extract from the post goes, but for those interested, I am adding a note on the Rani Damayanti episode, and Akbar's ban on forcible sati.

Like his father, the Emperor Humayun, Akbar issued official general orders prohibiting forcible sati and insisted that no woman could commit sati without the specific permission of his chief police officers. The chief police officers were instructed by him to delay the woman's decision for as long as possible.Pensions, gifts, and rehabilitative help were offered to the potential sati to persuade her from committing the act.

Akbar could thus be seen as the intellectual forefather of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, who campaigned against sati, and Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar, who campaigned for widow remarriage, in the 20th century.

His commitment to wiping out forcible sati was demonstrated very dramatically one day in 1583, when Akbar heard that Rani Damayanti, the cousin sister of one of his Rajput wives, Rukmavati, was being forced to commit sati by her sons on the death of her husband. She was the daughter of Mota Raja Udai Singh of Jodhpur, and her husband was Raja Jai Mal of Mertha who had just died .

On getting this news, Akbar personally rode all the way from Agra to Ranthambore to save this lady from being forced to commit sati. What is remarkable is that he went by himself, all alone. His personal security guard, when they heard the emperor had gone off all on his own, galloped after him.

Akbar arrived at the palace just in time to stop the sati taking place; already the Rani was being led out to the sati site (after having been drugged). By the sheer force of his personality, he was able to stop the sati from taking place. [This particular incident, of Akbar stopping the forcible Sati, is described in detail in V.A. Smith's book, 'Akbar the Great Mughal']

Now what an episode this, and Akbar's ban on forcible sati, would have made!! But of course the CVs are more interested in wet masalas!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

He was amazingly enlightened for his times, and for ours as well. He was in fact the precursor of Raja Ram Mohan Roy in this respect.

Shyamala Aunty

Yes, I did read about this Sati incident. These are the things that made him stand out. The fact that an Emperor rode out to save her sounds stranger than fiction!
Akbar's ability to break out of religious and social dogma is what makes us remember him even now.
There were so many incidents that could've been shown and were masaledaar with historical backing but...😭

I shall wait for your longer take, as I always do.

If Bairam Khan had killed Akbar, I think the whole empire, such as it was then, would have fallen apart, with multiple claimants. But he really cared for the Sultanat and Jalal, I think, in that order, since both were his creations at that point in time!

A 100 inch screen must be magnificent ! I use a 50 inch LED and the sets and the over all get up do look impressive in the early parts, especially the Amer fort set by Nitin Desai. I agree with you about all the rest, but I do wish the overabundance of jewellery was less tacky. Those 3 identical sets for the three sisters scream of their being fakes. The Tanishq real jewellery in the film was gorgeous.

prem as far as the script is concerned i will keep the two projects separate..as a movie cannot be compared to a serial, but my interest of knowing akbar in details only started once i saw rajat's akbar...in fact i never wanted to see the serial but when i accidentally saw and then saw rajat whom i never knew as an actor i was bowled over by his performance and used to repeat his scenes endlessly on each episode..even today he is a delight to watch repeatedly! i will not compare him to hrithik as hrithik has a superhero type looks and body whereas rajat has a unique quality of converting himself to the character and makes one forget that he is rajat and i would place him in the category of naseeruddin, irrfan, om puri, nawazzudin..!
