This takes place after the whole fiasco with Aniket dragging Survi to his party and her getting admonished for it by Karthik. This will at times follow the current track and in other instances veer away from it.

Life Chronicles

A YVR SS

Prologue

Season's changed, the weather changed, people changed. If you had asked her whether or not the boy, now man, she had fallen in love with would or could ever change, she would vehemently deny it. After all, on the temple steps before her deity, she had done just that with Karan. Karthik could never change, she had insisted, because his heart was too big and pure to change.

She had been wrong. This was life's lesson to her that individuals are reflective of their environment, and that by leaving him with the toxic person that was Tai, she had condemned him to becoming a hardened and hateful individual. What was most, or maybe least, surprising was that the hate he harboured was for her.

Eight long years had passed, and she was unsure at what point in time such a stark hatred towards her had developed. Regardless, it was painful. It hurt that her best friend, her first love, regarded her with such animosity and distaste. That he held her responsible for his mother's condition, a woman who she regarded as her own at one point.

A hand on her shoulder startled her, and she wiped the tear tracks on her cheeks seeing Karan's concerned expression. He sat down next to her on the temple steps, and regarded her silently. The look he conveyed spoke volumes and she broke eye contact, not wanting to bring up the topic they were both thinking of.

"It's only been three days since you've been back to that house," he mused out loud, "And you are absolutely miserable and skittish..."

She got up, not wanting to discuss the topic but he held her hand and stopped her from leaving.

"We need to talk about this," he told her firmly. Survi turned around, tears pooling into her eyes and he sighed. Pulling himself up, he drew her close, holding her by the shoulders.

"Survi, you can't keep going on like this," he explained gently. "You are literally standing by and watching yourself get torn down, all the while trying to keep up an identity that isn't yours. This kind of mental stress isn't good for you, or your health. You either have to tell him the truth or you have to leave. One or the other."

She regarded him with frightening eyes, face pale and brought up trembling hands to move him away.

"You know the situation so how can you tell me something like that?" she questioned lifelessly. Heart hammering against her chest, she tried to calm herself by taking in deep breaths of the cold night air.

Karan regarded her sternly, crossing his arms over his chest. "Survi," he admonished "This isn't a normal or healthy situation. You are literally in danger going to that house everyday. Look what happened with Aniket today, because of his childish actions your dignity was at stake and on top of that you got insulted by Karthik. If you get discovered..."

"But I can't leave either," she cried out. "I took a loan for baba's medical costs, and on top of that I have the responsibility of taking care of Lata kaki, I promised to do so. The people in that house aren't bad or dangerous, they just don't know better because of Tai. Aniket, Karthik, everyone in that house is indirectly influenced and controlled by her..."

"So what are you going to do about it Survi?" Karan questioned. "What are you going to do? Just stay there and hope that your identity won't be found out. I'm sorry, but that is being too idealistic. You left that house eight years ago because you couldn't fight Tai, and it makes sense that you leave again this time around."

"Don't say I left like I had a choice!" she defended helplessly "She would have hurt him then and she would hurt him now if I tried to expose her."

"Survi!" Karan yelled angrily. "For someone so smart, how can you be so dumb?"

She gaped at her friend's outburst, uncharacteristic for the normally calm and collected individual she had come to know.

"Survi think," he urged. "Karthik is Tai's golden goose! He is literally the reason she has all this wealth and power within society. Unfortunately, her children aren't up to the task of running the business, and she herself isn't educated enough to do it. That leaves her with Karthik. He is the one that makes everything work in her favor, do you really think she'd be willing to part with that? That's also the reason she saw you as a threat, because it meant that he had another person he cared about, another person who could take the attention away from her. I understand why you thought the threat was real when you were younger, but now she has way too much invested in Karthik to simply get rid of him."

Survi regarded him, stupefied. On some level she was shocked, at herself, for not being able to reach the conclusion that Karan had. It also made sense, while she was within the situation trying to navigate through the maze, Karan had a bird's eyes view of the whole situation.

Her legs gave out from underneath her, and Karan let her fall harshly to the ground, hoping she realized what he was getting at. Dazed eyes regarded him and he understood that she was beginning to piece things together.

Survi struggled to get her thought process on track, as Karan's words sent her mind spinning. She felt like an overly emotional fool, and realized just like eight years ago she had once again fallen into Tai's trap. Tear began to run down her cheeks, but this time they were angry and ashamed.

Karan bent down in front of her, and clasped her hand. "Do you understand now?" he asked. She nodded resolutely, and he smiled slightly.

"So what will you do now?"

Survi squared up, posture perfectly poised and head raised. Mouth cementing into a straight line, and eyes alight with determination she regarded her friend, clasping his hand back.

"I will fight."

Chapter 1

She tentatively entered through the doors of the mansion she once called home. It was quiet, despite being pretty late in the morning and she reckoned that the inhabitants were still sleeping in late. On quiet feet she made her way to the temple in the home, and brought her hands up in prayer. To be gifted with strength, courage and wits to finally finish a battle that had started so many years ago.

Sleep had alluded her the night before, and so she and her friend had stayed up late into the early hours of the morning in beginning to formulate their battle plan. What they were about to embark on was on less than a war.

"What are you doing here?" a shrill voice demanded harshly.

Against her better wishes, Survi flinched as she turned around to face Tai. The woman stood atop the intricate staircase, and Survi unabashedly stared at the woman who was no less than a monster from her worst nightmares. As she descended the stairs, Survi mentally compared her to the intimidating figure of the woman who had tortured her so many years ago. The closer she got the easier it became to realize that this was no creature, but an individual made up of flesh and blood just like her; and just like she had weaknesses and fears so too did this woman.

Tai brushed past the young woman and made her way to her unwanted son-in-law. Survi observed the exchange resignedly, her keen eyes taking in the discomfort that the young man was undergoing at the humiliating situation he was in. What surprised her more so, was the interaction that took place after with Aniket and his brother-in-law.

He wasn't as bad as she thought he was. For an individual who tortured her when they were younger, she could not be blind to the fact that his upbringing and life experiences shaped him into who he was, or what he could have become. There was still a small spark of naivetie and innocence, and that gave her hope in her determination to free Karthik, and maybe the family, of Tai and her wrong doings.

"I never would have pegged you to do what you did," she remarked, following him into the gazebo in the garden.

The young man turned out, sheepish at being caught in what he thought was an undercover operation.

"I may be a little slow on the uptake," he sheepishly explained. "But that doesn't mean I'm totally a lost case. Maybe I'm not as fast as you, but I eventually got on to the right path, didn't I?"

As their lighthearted conversation turned towards relationships and friendships, she couldn't help reminisce the past moments she had spent with her dear friend.

"Simmi!"

The prod of her fake name brought her out of her musings, and she turned towards the nervous young man who held out his hand in an offer of friendship.

"Yaar, I'm not offering a business deal," he blustered in an attempt to hide his nerves. "I'm offering to be your friend, a companion."

She regarded him with eyes filled with an emotion he couldn't identify. Her heavy gaze made him nervous, but then she smiled and his heart stuttered.

"Friendship isn't an easy relation to keep up. It requires unwavering trust on both ends, and faith in your friend. It is a bond that is forged with a lot of effort, but that can be broken very easily. It requires protection and love and comfort," she mused, as memories of her own friendship flashed through her mind.

Aniket straightened with resolve. He felt as if he was being challenged, and he wasn't one to back down from one when issued. "I promise. I promise to be with you in every joy and sorrow and to protect you to the best of my ability. So, friends?"

Survi regarded the young man before her eyes and banished the bad memories from the past. She grasped his hand, and shook it happily. Maybe this was the first step in righting the wrongs caused by Tai.

Aniket promised himself that he would never forget that moment. The way she smiled, the softness of her hand but the strength of her grip; this image of Simmi would be with him forever. He felt another presence near them, and turned to meet the murderous gaze of his cousin brother. Aniket immediately dropped Simmi's hand and walked off, making an excuse to delay the inevitable scolding he was about to get. Just because he stood up to his brother once does not mean he was going to be able to do it every time; at least not yet.

Survi watched her new friend walk off, and turned to see the cause of his distress. Karthik's murderous gaze knocked the wind out of her sails. It was easy to imagine only having to fight off Tai, whom she held no lack of resentment towards, but inevitably to a point she would have to fight Karthik as well - and that was a thought she was not looking forward to.

She tentatively made her way towards Lata kaki's room, and that meant walking past him. Karthik seemed particularly vindictive today as he continuously blocked her path.

"Excuse me," she murmured, keeping her head low to avoid his angry gaze. "I need to check on Lata kaki."

"It would be best to keep within your limits," he spoke, as if he hadn't heard her. "Do not forget that you are only here as the help. And the help does not associate with the members of this family without needing to do so. Keep within your limits, I know women like you; seemingly innocent but conniving none the less."

Anger sparked and her head snapped up. Karthik was momentarily dumbfounded as he met her fiery gaze, and his mind flashed to an image of a young girl who also used to give him the same gaze; many years back. Her lips pursed in a similar angry fashion, and for a moment it felt like the world titled beneath his feet.

"I understand clearly sir." Simmi enunciated to him. "However, my expectations on the job cannot interfere with my personal life; that is something that not even you can control. It seems I will have to make greater efforts to distance the two aspects, and for that reason I thank you for raising the concern. As your employee it is crucial that I fall within the guidelines that you have set out for me. However, that only has to do with when I am on the job. If you should so desire, we can set out an allotted number of hours within the day for me to be active' on the job."

The fiery response from the normally timid girl left him gaping, and as she walked passed him defiantly it took him a minute to comprehend that her dupatta had gotten stuck to his wrist chain. The moment reminded him of another one long past and it brought back an anger filled energy within him. Without breaking her solemn gaze, he carelessly ripped the dupatta away from him, not caring at the remorse that reared its head at her expression.

Simmi...Survi...sometimes they are so alike it is hard to forget that they aren't the same person...he thought to himself.

xXx

Survi marched into Lata kaki's room, and the sight of the careless nurse fueled her previous anger with her interaction with her ex-best friend.

"If you cannot do your job properly why even bother with being in the profession in the first place?" she snapped testily, watching as the nurses attention came onto her from her phone.

Normally the young girl was quite mild mannered, and very respectful of her elders. But in instances where one was careless and brutish towards another's life, she couldn't control herself.

"Ey, don't think to lecture me! I've been doing this way longer than you have!" the older nurse fired back, incensed.

Survi saw Tai walking by and kept quiet. If Karan and her were right, Tai probably purposefully was keeping this nurse here, despite her issues. She quietly went on her work, ignoring the mutterings of the offended woman.

For now this was only a suspicion, but in dealing with Tai her past experiences have taught her that extra caution was best. Turning towards the broken state of the woman she once considered her mother caused a new sense of strength to fill her. Lata kaki would get better, and she would right the wrongs being done to her son.

A notification on her phone alerted to a received message. She left the room, so as to not disturb the delicate machines with her device, and opened the message from Karan.

Stay out of sight today. Simmi is at Karthik's house for an audition. I'm hoping she won't get the part, I've planned something to keep her out of the way for a few weeks.

The young girl sent a heaven bound prayer. Her actress aspiring friend was sweet, but sometimes a little selfish in her motives - she wouldn't lie. For once, she was praying for her friend's failure, because the situation was already too sticky to manage without juggling an additional person.

For the rest of the day she kept her presence out of sight, and when her friend messaged her that she didn't make the audition cuts, she guiltily comforted her, coming home with lots of ice cream and listening to insults about the crudeness of one Mr. Karthik.

Her friend's sadness was short lived, as her brother presented her with tickets to an acting camp for the next few weeks. The opportunity to be picked out by audition coaches had her beaming, and mother and daughter hurriedly packed their backs in anticipation.

"Karan," Survi murmured, emotion thick in her voice. She stepped outside onto the veranda, and shut the door so as to not be heard. "I honestly don't know how to thank you. You're doing so much and I-"

"It's what friend's do," he answered simply with a smile. He was bouncing a ball against the wall, a nervous habit he had. For a psychologist, or one in training anyway, he made sure to have some type of outlets for his distress because he had firsthand experience in knowing what it could do to a person to keep things bottled up.

Karan was broken out of his reverie when Survi caught the ball, stopping him from his repetitive actions.

"I promise to repay you for everything you are doing for me," she said sincerely. He laughed off her emotional talks and pulled her forward.

"Yaar, enough with the sentimental talks, it's time to get down to business. This psychologist has some idea's up his sleeve but he's going to need your help, are you ready?" he asked. She nodded with a smile and his face twisted into an amused smirk.

"Ok good. First things first, we need your nurses uniform!"

"...excuse me?"
