Life Chronicles
A YVR SS
Prologue
Season's changed, the weather changed, people changed. If you had asked her whether or not the boy, now man, she had fallen in love with would or could ever change, she would vehemently deny it. After all, on the temple steps before her deity, she had done just that with Karan. Karthik could never change, she had insisted, because his heart was too big and pure to change.
She had been wrong. This was life's lesson to her that individuals are reflective of their environment, and that by leaving him with the toxic person that was Tai, she had condemned him to becoming a hardened and hateful individual. What was most, or maybe least, surprising was that the hate he harboured was for her.
Eight long years had passed, and she was unsure at what point in time such a stark hatred towards her had developed. Regardless, it was painful. It hurt that her best friend, her first love, regarded her with such animosity and distaste. That he held her responsible for his mother's condition, a woman who she regarded as her own at one point.
A hand on her shoulder startled her, and she wiped the tear tracks on her cheeks seeing Karan's concerned expression. He sat down next to her on the temple steps, and regarded her silently. The look he conveyed spoke volumes and she broke eye contact, not wanting to bring up the topic they were both thinking of.
"It's only been three days since you've been back to that house," he mused out loud, "And you are absolutely miserable and skittish..."
She got up, not wanting to discuss the topic but he held her hand and stopped her from leaving.
"We need to talk about this," he told her firmly. Survi turned around, tears pooling into her eyes and he sighed. Pulling himself up, he drew her close, holding her by the shoulders.
"Survi, you can't keep going on like this," he explained gently. "You are literally standing by and watching yourself get torn down, all the while trying to keep up an identity that isn't yours. This kind of mental stress isn't good for you, or your health. You either have to tell him the truth or you have to leave. One or the other."
She regarded him with frightening eyes, face pale and brought up trembling hands to move him away.
"You know the situation so how can you tell me something like that?" she questioned lifelessly. Heart hammering against her chest, she tried to calm herself by taking in deep breaths of the cold night air.
Karan regarded her sternly, crossing his arms over his chest. "Survi," he admonished "This isn't a normal or healthy situation. You are literally in danger going to that house everyday. Look what happened with Aniket today, because of his childish actions your dignity was at stake and on top of that you got insulted by Karthik. If you get discovered..."
"But I can't leave either," she cried out. "I took a loan for baba's medical costs, and on top of that I have the responsibility of taking care of Lata kaki, I promised to do so. The people in that house aren't bad or dangerous, they just don't know better because of Tai. Aniket, Karthik, everyone in that house is indirectly influenced and controlled by her..."
"So what are you going to do about it Survi?" Karan questioned. "What are you going to do? Just stay there and hope that your identity won't be found out. I'm sorry, but that is being too idealistic. You left that house eight years ago because you couldn't fight Tai, and it makes sense that you leave again this time around."
"Don't say I left like I had a choice!" she defended helplessly "She would have hurt him then and she would hurt him now if I tried to expose her."
"Survi!" Karan yelled angrily. "For someone so smart, how can you be so dumb?"
She gaped at her friend's outburst, uncharacteristic for the normally calm and collected individual she had come to know.
"Survi think," he urged. "Karthik is Tai's golden goose! He is literally the reason she has all this wealth and power within society. Unfortunately, her children aren't up to the task of running the business, and she herself isn't educated enough to do it. That leaves her with Karthik. He is the one that makes everything work in her favor, do you really think she'd be willing to part with that? That's also the reason she saw you as a threat, because it meant that he had another person he cared about, another person who could take the attention away from her. I understand why you thought the threat was real when you were younger, but now she has way too much invested in Karthik to simply get rid of him."
Survi regarded him, stupefied. On some level she was shocked, at herself, for not being able to reach the conclusion that Karan had. It also made sense, while she was within the situation trying to navigate through the maze, Karan had a bird's eyes view of the whole situation.
Her legs gave out from underneath her, and Karan let her fall harshly to the ground, hoping she realized what he was getting at. Dazed eyes regarded him and he understood that she was beginning to piece things together.
Survi struggled to get her thought process on track, as Karan's words sent her mind spinning. She felt like an overly emotional fool, and realized just like eight years ago she had once again fallen into Tai's trap. Tear began to run down her cheeks, but this time they were angry and ashamed.
Karan bent down in front of her, and clasped her hand. "Do you understand now?" he asked. She nodded resolutely, and he smiled slightly.
"So what will you do now?"
Survi squared up, posture perfectly poised and head raised. Mouth cementing into a straight line, and eyes alight with determination she regarded her friend, clasping his hand back.
"I will fight."
