I feel that Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai have some very strong characters. Some which were and some which are a part of the show.
Akshara - A girl married at the age of 19-20 (that is what I have heard people saying not so sure about it). She faces all challenges strongly. She looses her first child, just few weeks into the pregnancy. She was blamed for her father-in-laws elder brothers death by his wife, because of which she had to leave her extended family, her parents, sibilings, in laws and go to cape town with her husband and children. One may think she did have her husband and children but for a woman like Akshara for who family was so important going away from them for one of their happiness and then forgiving that person is a sign of strength. Later her daughter misunderstood her and went away from her, even when she came back she was cold towards her, yet Akshara stood strong and did every direct and indirect attempt to get Naira back.
Naitik - He lost his mother, but when his wife pointed out to him his father's loneliness, he was willing for his father's remarriage. It takes a child a lot of strength, no matter what age, to do that. Plus he whole heartedly accepted Devyani as a mother, but definitely not a replacement to Gayatri.
Varsha - Her husband had a child with another woman, she accepted the child and loved her as her own. Which is a very strong thing to do, to not see the child as a sign of her husband's mistake but only an innocent child.
Rashmi - Her husband left her for another woman, she had a young child to take care of and she did, with her mother in law by her side. She set her life and did very well. She didn't break, she stayed strong and life gave her a second chance at love and marriage with Sammer.
Devyani - Had been in an abusive marriage and had two kids from her first husband. At length she finally got out of it and then started working with her father, helping him prepare medicines. She stood on her feet, she become strong.
Naksh - On his wedding day his would be bride who he was in love with left him, that can be hurtful for anyone, but he moved on, he got busy with his work, more importantly just because one girl left him he didn't become cold to woman or thought marriages should not happen.
Tara - She ran away from her marriage for her hockey dream. Her timing was wrong, but being least bothered about what people think and leaving so that she can fufil her dream takes courage.
Gayu - For me I still don't consider Gayu's feelings for Karthik were ever love, but another truth also is that for Gayu, she did consider it as love, so to move on especially, when that guy is in front of you as your sister's lover/husband, is a strong thing.
Manish - His son was angry at him since 20 years for a mistake he didn't do, yet he was silent about his innocence to keep the promise he made to his wife. It shows his strength and the strength of his love for his first wife.
Suvarna - A woman who send her child away from her to give another woman's child love. Though I find that it was unnecessary for her to do so, I can't deny what she did was something very strong, especially when she knew how Karthik felt about her.
Dadi - Much isn't shown, but it was mentioned once that when her husband died she managed to take care of the business and bring it to a new height. I feel that is a big thing, Goenka family doesn't seem to support girls working and dadi is someone who always goes by the rules, so for her to step out and help directly or indirectly in the office was something which may have taken her to be very strong.
Naira - As a young teenager she was stalked, almost entered human trafficking, these events scared her but then she made a friend Sukanya, and moved on. Then she saw Sukanya die in front of her eyes, not only that, she also turned a suspect, worst even she felt her own mother distrusted her, then she ran away. Life at the ashram definitely wasn't very easy, especially not for a girl who was her daddy's princess. Going from getting everything you laid your finger on to a girl who worked as a tour guide to make ends meet and have the roof above the head, not just for herself but for the whole ashram, she could have easily thought about herself but choose to provide for the Ashram that took her in instead of being selfish that was her strength. Yes she was wrong in judging her mother but that doesn't how strong she was to live and earn good lesson from her ashram life. Then princess goes back to her palace but also that is for the ashram, she did still have that fear of the police, but she went because that would save the ashram, fighting your fears, for those who are dear to you is strength. Then she lost her mother forever, but she didn't break she stayed as strong as she could because she knew she had a family to take care of. She was strong when she forgave Mansi, she could have punished her the daughter in her wanted to, if she could punish Karthik why not Mansi, that was because she was asked to take the decision as Akshara. She knew if her mother was there, she would have forgiven, so she forgave. When Karthik used to get angry at her for siding Suvarna Manish and trying to bring him closer to them, she stayed strong because she knew she was right. Now strength to see Karthik's POV as a brother.
Karthik - Personally to me the strongest character, he loved his father as a dear friend but then he saw his father fighting with his mother, making her cry, spending time with another woman and finally his mother killing herself and all this when he was a young boy (6-8 years). The pain he must have gone through seeing the change in his father's character. He lost his mother he could have just cried hugging his father and mourned for her but he didn't, he chose to be away from his father, he chose to get justice for his mother. It must have taken every ounce of strength in his little body to do that, he was a little kid, how badly he must have wanted to crash into his father's arms and cry. When Suvarna behaved well with him he also may have been attracted to that motherly love, but he stayed away and didn't bend so that he could be just to his mother. During Karthik signing those files and the dance performance, he apologized to his mother for helping the man and dancing with the woman who wronged her. In this fight he had no one on by his side, dadi was probably against Suvarna for a while because Manish got married without her consent, but not for the reason Karthik was, but still Karthik never had any coldness to any of his other family members, he never stopped his sister or his cousins to call Suvarna mother and love her. He never loved them any less for not supporting and standing by him, that is a sign of being a strong person. I know he was wrong in judging but like I said for Naira, being wrong doesn't take away, that how strongly he stood to get his mother justice. When he saw the problems between Akshara and Naira, he knew Akshara was right, instead of connecting their problem to his problem and thinking that even here the parent should be wrong, he understood that only the situation was wrong and their was some misunderstanding, and not seeing those two situation alike and actually understanding the situation not being blinded what he had gone through is strength. Naksh was always against Karthik but while seeing the mms Karthik fears if Naksh sees it, he might feel that new people aren't worth trusting, fearing and showing such concern for a person who time and again spoke against you for no good reason, is being strong on your moral values. The girl who he loved thought that he could kidnap her father and cause her mother's accident, it took strength for seeing her side of the story.
