Naira was lost in her thoughts. She could not stop thinking about Karthik and Gayu. Smiling sadly while ironing her sister in law Puja's clothes, her mind darted back 12 years back; when she first met them.

St Xaviers Boarding School, Maharashtra

Naira walked into the school smiling. She liked this place, it was new and exciting. She dragged her luggage inside the gates when she saw a small gathering. A group of big boys were surrounding a boy of her age.

Senior Sir, please sir, I cannot dance. I do not know. Please do not beat me" a boy was crying while a girl was standing there terrified. Naira stopped to observe what was happening when one of the bigger boys raised a hand to beat the smaller boy.

Naira felt anger rush through her nerves. She caught the bigger boys hand and shouted "Don't you have sense? Is this how you behave with a junior?" Just see what I do now and she screamed "Help!!!!" causing a group of teachers to surround the group.

"What happened?" Asked a teacher

"Ragging Mam; these group of boys were ragging this one" Naira told and pushed the tall guy in front. The teacher took the boy and his friends to the principal room.

"And you" Naira screamed at the boy who was ragged and the girl nearby "Don't you know to help yourself when you are in trouble?"

"How are you so brave" he asked her in awe

"Don't trouble others; but if others trouble you; you shall stand up for yourself. You have to stand up for what is right; always; never allow any wrong to happen to you, to anyone else." Naira told firmly.

"Hi, I am Naira" she held out her hand

"Karthik and this is my twin Gayu; can we be three be friends?"

"You look like a frog; Mendak; But yeah we can be friends" Naira told sticking her tongue out

"And you are one sherni". Karthik told; what do we name Gayu?

"Fatty?" Naira suggested sending the 3 of them into squeals of laughter.

Naira's thoughts were broken by the smell of something burning. Alarmed; she saw her sister in laws dress burnt by the iron.

"Idiot; don't you have eyes?' Puja screamed. Puja was 3 years younger to Naira yet she also treated her like Siddarth.

"This wretch does not know anything" Naira's mother in law told as she pulled Naira's hair and pushed her to the ground. This was a 3000 rupee dress. Don't you know that silk dresses should be ironed on low heat?

"She does not know Mom; we should only teach her how much heat should be applied for what dress" Siddarth told walking into the house with an evil grin.

Naira's heart sank. She knew Siddarth supporting her meant nothing good and everything wrong. She started trembling as Siddarth walked towards her with deep hatred in her eyes.

He had a lit cigar on his hand; Naira understood at once what he was about to do. She put her hand behind her back to save herself; but knew her efforts were in vain.

Siddarth pulled Naira's hands and used her tender hands as his ash tray causing her to shriek out in pain.

"Now you will know the correct heat right" He asked with a sneer as Naira continued to writhe in pain.

Looking highly unconcerned; he left the room along with the others leaving her all alone still in the shock of whatever had happened.

Later that night during dinner

"Mom, Dad, Puja, we cannot do anything to her for the next 2 weeks. I have a big conference coming up and sadly I need to take her there. If our presentation gets through, I shall get a 15 crore deal. Once I get that deal, I will get back at her father for what he did to us."

Naira overheard this and felt relieved. Yet she was ashamed of the life she was leading. She was ashamed that she had killed the brave girl inside her and of not being able to walk out of this life with her head high.

"Gayu, it will be nice if we get to meet her once na? Karthik asked fidgeting with his hands." I should not have pushed her away like that" He told, his voice choking.

"Yes Karthik; at least I should not have let her go. You were angry and upset; but I also refused to listen to her. In case she had got into any misery; we are responsible for that" Gayu said softy; her eyes welling up.

Two weeks passed by rather quickly. Naira felt better than what she felt in a long time. The absence of physical violence somehow made her feel better both physically and mentally. She was made to eat properly at least once a day so that she would look better during the conference. The food intake with not being wounded gave her energy.

On the day of the conference

Naira wore a full sleeve grand salwar suit. She looked weak but definitely better than what she was earlier. She admired herself in the mirror after a long time; looking at her face without any slap marks; her face not tear stained

She went down and saw that Siddarth was already ready. He looked at her with disgust

"See don't think things have changed for you. I need this deal which is why you were in a grace period. When you are coming with me; you are not to talk with anyone other than who I say. You are to sit in one place and do what I say and when I say.
