Part 2

It was past midnight. Naira was sleeping in her room. Someone woke her up with a bucket of cold water and yelled "Happy Bday Naira" Naira woke up to see Gayu and Karthik standing next to her bed grinning broadly.

"You Guys here?" Naira asked confused

"Yes it's your birthday". If we are not here; who else would be? Karthik asked pulling her up from the bed.

"Get up lazy bum; don't you want to cut your birthday cake?" Karthik exclaimed.

Naira woke up startled. She looked around her and realised that it had been a dream; which would never come true. She was in the same place as she was in the night before. Praying to god to give her enough strength for the day; she sighed and looked at her mobile."

"8:00 AM" read the time. "Hey Bhagwan, I overslept, god knows what is going to happen now; they would already be awake" Naira trembled at the thought of waking up late.

She got ready super- fast and went down. Her in laws gave a dirty look at her

"Welcome Maharani; what made you wake up so early" Her mother in law stood in front of her with loath in her eyes.

"Ma ji, I am sorry; I didn't realise the time; I shall prepare breakfast right away" Naira said and hurried to the kitchen.

The morning passed away quickly. Naira had to prepare breakfast, lunch, clean the entire 4000 square feet house, wash clothes and vessels. She was done with everything by 3 o clock when her stomach gave a growl and she realised she had not had anything from morning. She knew not much would be left for her to eat. Taking the left over one chapatti on a plate, she was about to eat when she was called again

"Is it your birthday today" Her mother in law asked. Naira nodded positively.

"And why did you not tell us"? She demanded?

"It does not matter. I do not matter to you anyway and why should my birthday matter"? Naira shouted with a sudden strength she got. She realised she had made a mistake when she completed the sentence.

Her mother in law slapped her the impact of which sent both Naira and her plate to the ground.

"Yes you are right. You do not matter to us, but your money does. Does not your father know that gold is supposed to be sent for your birthday? Where is that? But yeah, why would he send it? He would be happy passing on his curse away to us. You are nothing but a curse." She screamed sending Naira into a fit of tears.

The journey from Mumbai to Ahmedabad was quite. Karthik could not stop thinking about her. His best friend; the friend who taught him what courage was, the friend with whom he could share anything and everything. The friend whom he thought was his life. The girl who he loved and the one whom his parents adored.

Karthik's POV

Why did you reject me Naira? Did you not see the love in my eyes? I would have given my entire life for you if you had asked. Instead you asked me to forget you. I could not and have not forgotten you. I cannot give any other girl the place I gave in my heart for you.

Naira's POV

What kind of a life I am leading? Why am I living this life? Why am I not standing up for myself? Naira thought pacing up and down in her room.

"You know the answers Naira" her inner self answered.

In this one year, I have tried escaping this hell multiple times.

I have spoken back, got hit, still I did not give up.

I filed a complaint with the police, however this family has the police under their control due to their affluent status and that plan was a folly too.

I vented in to my father; who as expected turned a deaf ear and told that I was no more his concern

I tried to run away, but was caught and punished badly that I could not even get up for 3 days.

I did not want to commit suicide as I knew it was cowardly and whatever sherni was left in me could not do it

I wished he would kill me and end it once and for all but I knew that would not happen either. My mother's property was in my father's name and he had an eye for it. Until then he would not kill me either.

The result? I succumbed to the pressure and the violence. I bowed down to their needs; took whatever they gave me. The more I bowed down, the more I was abused. It was increasing on a day to day basis off late. They knew I had no one and played it to their advantage. The only times I was not tortured was when Siddarth had office parties and I was supposed to accompany him as a wife for showing off. He could not afford to abuse me physically then as we would have to explain the wounds. Yet he made it up by wounding me with his words.

My only hope was that one day I will get to meet my friends; and I was banking on them to rescue me from this hell; if I still mattered to them.
