Part 10
Naitik was waiting for Akshara at his farmhouse. He had made all the arrangements for the surprise for Akshara. Rashmi and Mohit had helped him and left only moments ago. Varsha and Shaurya knew all about it beforehand and so they convinced Akshara that they will come together later and Akshara could go on her own.
When Akshara arrived at the place, memories kept flooding back to her about Naitik's birthday party. Her birthday was the next day and she was kinda upset that they were having this party a day before and not on her birthday, unaware of everything. But when she entered, she realized that no one else came except Naitik….obviously it was his farmhouse, he had to come first.
"Baki sab kaha hai?"
"Abhi tak nahi aye."
"Oh!" Akshara couldn't think of anything else to say.
"Akshara, I wanted to show you around. Last time inte sare logo ke beech main tumne kuch nahi dekha."
Akshara nod at this. Naitik put his hand on hers and took her upstairs on the room where everything was planned.
Naitik opened the door of the room, holding Akshara by his other hand, he said excitedly, "This room is my favourite…bachpaan main daddajee mujhe yaha khelne le ate the," he smiled at the memory of the old days.
Akshara couldn't see anything. The room was pitch black. Naitik had turned off all the switches. "Naitik," she said his name in a whisper. Very few people knew she was afraid of the dark. "Yahan to pura andhera hai." As Naitik closed the door behind them, Akshara hold Naitik's hand tighter to feel something of comfort. The window was open and cold breezes were blowing on the room, the moonlight fell on the room as the only light that was beautiful. Akshara waited for her eyes to get adjusted to the moonlight. Naitik smiled at her childish behavior and lightly removed her grip from his hands before holding her from the shoulders.
"I want to show you something," he said.
"Par lights to on kar do…" Akshara's fear was now turning to irritation.
Naitik bit his lips to hide his smile and lightly moved to switch on the small white dim light. Akshara closed her eyes with the sudden light and opened her eyes to see the room created into a small cottage. Bamboo sticks were resting on places and a small table was set for two. The place where Akshara and Naitik were standing was beautifully laid down with white satin sheets and the entire place was decorated with purple flowers, Akshara's favourite colour. On the walls were pictures of Akshara and Naitik. They never had one picture of them alone, afraid other people would know about it. It wasn't like they were ashamed to tell anyone but they didn't want the entire class to start talking about them. That was one of the reasons why all the pictures had one of their other friends with them. Naitik didn't crop the pictures, thinking many of the pictures would lose their charm.
The room wasn't really decorated very lavishly, it was simple. But Naitik liked the idea of creating a cottage in his posh bungalow's one room. It was simple, just like Akshara was.
"Do you like it?" Naitik asked hopefully.
Akshara was stumped. She wasn't used to anyone doing so much for her. And Naitik doing so much for her made her feel she was the only girl on the planet. She turned her head at him, and just nodded. Naitik smiled at her because he realized she did like them.
"Just wait," he motioned for her and went out to get something. He came back with a gift pack in his hands and gave it to Akshara.
"Naitik, yeh kya hai?" Akshara was curious what more could he add.
"Tum hi khol ke dekho."
Akshara smiled at him and opened it. It was a purple sari. Akshara couldn't form any words. The first thing that came to her mind how could she carry this gift to her home. She would have to tell so many lies. She quickly dismissed those thoughts as Naitik started speaking, "Main chahta hoon ke tum ye sari abhi pehno."
Akshara smiled and with Naitik's direction went into another room to change. When she came back into the room again, Naitik was stumped. It was the very first time he was seeing her in a sari, except one time when they danced on their collage function. But that was formal. And today she looked no less than an angel. She was nervous, he could feel it. And that gave him an urge to protect her though she was completely safe with him. He carefully moved towards her and whispered next to her ear, "You are looking gorgeous."
Akshara blushed and softly mouthed a 'thank you.' After having a moment, Naitik took her near to the table where most of Akshara's favourite foods were placed. But Akshara's eyes moved to the cake, where it was written, "Happy birthday in advance, Akshara." Akshara now got the whole idea. She felt stupid that she didn't think of this.
"Happy birthday, Akshara," Naitik said as he turned her around and noticed the tears in her eyes. Akshara smiled at him, removing the tears from her eyes and giving him a peck on his cheek.
Everything seemed so much like a dream.

They had spent the entire evening together. The two of them were now sitting beside the window sill, staring at the sky. After a moment, Akshara broke the silence.
"Naitik…"
"Hmm…"
"Mujhe tumse baat karni thi…."
"Bolo," But he didn't turn his look at her. He was still staring at the vast darkness of the sky.
"Tumhe kya lagta hai…..hum jo kar rahe hai….kya wo thik hai?" she asked hesitantly, afraid Naitik might get offended.
Naitik was confused for a while and then realized both of them came from a very conservative family. But he didn't think all that while planning these for Akshara. It just happened.
"Pata nahi Akshara…." He told her honestly. He didn't know. He wanted to believe all these are true but he was practical and he was afraid that one day this fantasy land made by them will break.
Akshara was relieved he wasn't offended. But she was also disappointed he didn't answer the way she wanted. Unlike Naitik, Akshara actually believed in fairytales.
"Tumhe pata hai jab main chota tha I never actually believed in love," Naitik started talking again, with the same look in his eyes Akshara saw twice before. Sometimes Akshara thought Naitik has tones of unhappiness behind his picture perfect image. "I didn't even believe it until recently…" he raised his look on her, keeping a smile on his face which made Akshara blush. "But now I believe in it…par mujhe ye bhi pata hai that reality can be harsh."
Akshara was shocked at his saying.
"But today I don't wanna face this reality," Naitik completed his sentence which made Akshara relax. She was still disturbed but at least he was honest with her.
"I just know I love you," Akshara said it silently.
Naitik smiled at her. "I love you too," he said as he pulled her a little closer to him.
"Naitik…" she said again after few moments of silence. "It's getting late. Mujhe ghar jana chahiye"
Naitik furrowed his eyebrows before saying, "I will drop you."
****
Akshara fell onto her bed, reliving today's entire evening. It was the first time for her….Naitik made her feel so loved and she loved her this birthday to the core. But Naitik's sayings left behind something on her too. Reality can be harsh and she shuddered at the thought. She loved her present and wanted her future to be the same. She was more than happy her parents didn't say anything on her coming home after 10. She closed her eyes but it was a long time before sleep finally came as memories of the night kept her awake for long.
