Akshara's Column: Reuse old saris to make quilts

Recently ma was throwing out some old, worn out saris. But I thought that we could use them to make some light weight quilts. I told ma that we could make some bright coloured Jaipuri style quilts that we often see at the market and which are so expensive. We could get these tailor made at home and that too for half the price. Ma was sceptical at first but later agreed to do so.

I informed ma that to make these quilts, we would only require some good quality cotton. So we called in our karigar and I explained what needed to be done. I asked him to use only good quality cotton so that the quilt has a long shelf life.

When the quilts were ready, they looked so pretty and colourful. Most of all, they felt cosy and comfortable. Though they are lightweight, they can still provide adequate warmth. I even did some interesting embroidery on them, I sewed some cute teddy bears onto Naksh's quilt and some flowers on ma and Bhabhima's quilts. Even ma liked the quilts a lot.
