I thought exactly like you at first, but then I answered myself in this way. From my point of view, they are showing that Chikki is tortured by her mama-mami and made to work not for food, but for their pleasure. This is where Chikki's situation differs from most children in India's villages. Their is no love for her in her home. Her mama has enough money to live comfortably, even then he sits at home and eats while torturing Chikki all the time. This was probably mentally affecting the girl. Hence, Akshara wanted to help Chikki and not the other girls selling toys on the road (who might not have money but a loving family and parents).
Do I make sense? 😕
