Akshara's Column: Couples should not take impulsive decisions

Hi friends…I decided to return home early as I have been worried about Rashmi and Nikhil's marital problems. I felt that at a crucial time like this, when the family is facing problems, I should be with them.

The family has recently come to know about Rashmi and Nikhil's problems, in fact the entire situation has turned crucial as Nikhil had come to our home and told the elders of the family that he and Rashmi want to get divorced.

Every couple goes through ups and downs in their marital life; sometimes the problems are big and sometimes minor. But it is not right to impulsively opt for a divorce without even trying to make the marriage work. Every couple has their differences at the start of a relationship, even Naitik and I had problems, but with time, effort and the support of our families we have worked out our differences. Rashmi and Nikhil are angry right now and hence they have made this hasty decision.

Daddaji and the rest of the family is worried that people will start talking and the family name will be tarnished if word of Nikhil and Rashmi's divorce gets out. It is understandable that the elders in our family are concerned as they have taken a lot of effort to earn this respect. But right now it is more important for us to bring Rashmi and Nikhil together. Naitik too is upset at seeing his younger sister in such a miserable situation and he wants to support her. He feels that we should not force Rashmi to be in this marriage if she is not happy. I will try and make Naitik realise that first every effort has to be made to solve their differences. I believe that marriages cannot simply be dissolved without making every effort to save them.
