Yeh Rishta takes on Balika Vadhu

Looks like Star Plus cannot resist taking digs at the Colors serial Balika Vadhu, which has the highest TRPs right now. So, while the daadisa in Balika played to perfection by Surekha Sikra is old-fashioned, obstinate and rooted in superstitions, the daadi in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, played by Vinita Malik is progressive and believes in moving with the times. So while daadisa expects even her 12-year-old granddaughter-in-law to cover her head and follow tradition, daadi is more liberal and insists on treating her granddaughter-in-law as a daughter.
Perhaps, that could well be why Yeh Rishta is gradually climbing up the popularity charts. While the plot is set in a traditional Marwari family based in Udaipur, the characters learn to make peace with the times and break away from tradition, allowing their daughter Akshara to take a call on a proposal she has received.
Meanwhile, Balika is getting terribly depressing with the young widow Suguna, played by Vibha Anand, being confined to a dark room outside the main house. Her constant tears, daadisa's insistence that her widowed granddaughter kill all desires and learn to live an austere life is perhaps the channel's way of driving home the message of how early marriages can lead to tragic circumstances. However, one does feel that they are going a bit overboard, what with the young widow undergoing guilt pangs at the prospect of eating a jalebi.
Dehleej, which has been on air for a few weeks on NDTV Imagine now is rather out-dated. The bahu of a prominent business family, who steps out to work after her husband's factory is gutted in a fire, is subjected to the most clichd advances; like an older colleague trying to stroke the lady's hand suggestively in full public view. One would like to believe that a man who plans to make advances is not going to do so openly and secondly, the message being driven home is that women who step out of their Dehleej to work will be subjected to such advances all the time.

Yeah , but I guess Dadi-saa's character in BV is more credible than Dadi in YRKKH because its *usually* older people who're more orthodox and insistent upon following all the out-dated customs .... and , logically speaking , its funny that Dadi [ along with Omi ] is the most liberal person in the family because , by her own admission , she's uneducated.

But I do agree with the part about the show's popularity , even tho' it has flaws , there are no negative characters and its a feel-good show and thats why its so popular = )

^ I'm not saying that its a necessity that grandmoms/grandpas have to be narrow minded : ) I'm just saying that I find Dadi-saa's character in BV more credible from my POV than Dadi's in YRKKH . Even my maternal grandmom is very liberal and all ....but most of the other grandmoms I know , including my paternal one and my friends' grandmoms , are the types "When are you going to learn cooking ? "

And more than Dadi's broad views , what I find weird is that her son/DIL still think in that old mould : S

Just my opinion : ) No intention to offend anyone .

I understand what ur saying...i agree with u..elders are usually like tht but there r others too who r quite libreral...ye rishta is at a high these days bec. of obvious reasons while Bidai and BV r (in my opinion) going through a low phase..specially BV bec. they r not showing nything good.it's all depressing n it's not good to watch the same thing over n over again..they need to change the track soon but i'm sure it's gonna get even more depressing bec. of Gehna's death (i think so..) ...n Bidai is bidai will find out it's new villain/vamp n Alekh's treatment..they have a lot of tracks n drama to show...I think after Naitik Aksh marriage, after a while the viewers interest will drop , until n unless they do something to keep it going...

there is nothing wrong with uneducated person, that is why they are good in life's realities, as their experenices are from own life, not from books.. another thing is that, dadi did mention about her husband being highly educated.. learning happens there.. it is not necessary that you take Phd to learn what is happening around you.. you learn from your life, your society etc and adapting life accordingly, you dont need education for that..

Heavens ,looks like I'm constantly being misunderstood 😕

I'm not saying that uneducated persons are all negative/conservative blah blah . What I mean is that logically [ MY logic that too 😆 ] a person who's uneducated tends to be more conservative than people who have been exposed to books . "Tends" I stress , not that its some rule written in stone .

And I remember about Dadi's husband = ) My actual point is that Dadi's being so liberal when her son and daughter-in-law are still so orthodox is weird . And whatever I said about uneducated persons was purely in comparison to the grandmother in Balika Vadhu . IN MY OPINION , the BV character is more credible than Daadi in YRKKH .
