I happened to chance upon this show on a lark on YT and was pleasantly surprised to find myself liking it. Off late, 95% of the new shows that have launched on desi TV have been disappointing across the board...many, right here on this channel Sony...whether it's their historicals losing direction or their attempt at 90s fluff falling flat.

This show surprisingly appears to have some coherent vision in it's writing, in character build up, a focus on conversations, nuances, all rare dying species on Indian TV today...lol so I found myself quite appreciating that as I finally managed to catch up on the first 6 episodes.

A few things jarred initially like KK's accent feeling caricaturized but I find his oddball attempts at Hindi funny otherwise...especially since he's not just used for "comedy" but has layers to his characterization in terms of his various relationships...his best friend Prabhakar, his soft corner for his daughter etc.

All shows these days try to do cookie cutter characterizations of the brooding ML with daddy issues or mommy issues etc. etc...I found the families of the leads surprisingly more normal compared to many on TV...over time, the Reddys turned out to be more condescending and snotty but even there it's not as caricaturized as it is in most other shows on TV right now with cliched vamps.

There is so much nuance to take in in terms of character interactions...be it Sid-Anushka and their struggles with the said/unsaid...unable to help being drawn to each other but still finding ways to lash out in anger or bitterness too...Sid's struggle with communicating his hurt is interesting...especially notable in the scene when he abruptly wants to show her around the house, simply to stop her from eating the gud waali mithaai even while giving her attitude otherwise...lol...and Anushka for her part is using the Ice Princess routine with him to spare herself the hurt but still ends up being affected.

Acting-wise, this is the first time I'm seeing both actors and they seem good for their debut...Palak could use some improvement on her voice modulation and learning to soften it, but she emotes well otherwise, especially with her eyes...really liked her emotional breakdown on the dining table in epi 1...and Namish has a good voice with good enunciation...also does a good job of showing Sid's street smart confidence, swagger in himself, even as his eyes change when he looks at Anushka...

The FBs to their childhood provide good context for their past bonding and whatever caused them to fall apart...so far I see it more as a personality issue and those clashes are interesting to watch over slapstick cliches...the actors cast as their teenage selves are good too.

I really like Sid's interactions with his father and mother...the conflicted, somewhat bitter exchanges with his father and the more affectionate ones with his mother...both are nice...the casting for Prabhakar is so good too...so natural as the principled middle class employee who likes to keep his head down and is happy flying under the radar.

Special, special mention for the lines of Hindi poetry infused into some of the dialogues for Sid and his dad, especially in week one...👏👏👏 for the dialogue writer.

Would like to see the show sustain like this but these kind of understated low-key shows don't usually last on Sony...lol...let's see how this one goes.

Agreed. Exceptionally well dissected review of the show so far. The show indeed looks promising. And the relationships and the conversations between the characters have indeed been kept realistic. That's what I appreciate about some of the shows on this channel. They try to keep the taam-jhaam down and focus on the story. And it being a finite series definitely helps. Palak and Namit are getting better and all the complaints that the viewers had about the show in its first 3 days have been addressed by the PH. So, that's a good sign. There is a fine balance of intense drama, humor, sarcasm, serious dialogues as well as chemistry in the show. All said, the show is in its inception and is panning out well. It's going to be a nice journey! Hope to see ya'll around :)

Thank you :)

I'm not aware of what complaints viewers had with the first 3 epis...lol I personally quite enjoyed the first three epis and the lack of cliches in Sid-Anushka's interactions...no trip/catch, flying dupattas etc. type of nonsense...it's rare to see a scene of two ppl coming face to face after so long without that level of drama...even the eyelock wasn't typical...Anushka dropped her eyes quickly but kept looking back at him...the build up to the emotion of that moment was so nicely done over 3 epis with the near hit or miss to them finally seeing each other, sensing each other and still not being able to say much. I liked how Sid directly told her he knew it was her jogging earlier in the morning too even as she denied it...lol and then she tried to hide her allergy also.

Also, I'm not sure how much the PH can address of complaints in real time since the show seems pre-shot in real locations around Delhi...that's another thing I'm quite enjoying...the fresh locations and not the typical daily soap type sets...these look like real houses and real places.

There's a different kind of understated chemistry b/w Sid-Anushka that I'm liking...the awkwardness, the gruffness, the underlying understanding even as they try to be aloof to each other...there was a wonderful line about dimaag and dil by Sid in the hospital scene that I really liked too.

It's rare to see so much emotion b/w two leads aajkal without the cliched ways of showing "physical closeness"...lol

Ah ok, browsed around the forum and saw the complaints about caricaturization of South Indians...I suppose I'm not aware of the details b/w the cultures of the different states but they seem to be creating a distinct character for KK, hence his South Indian traits are more stereotypically highlighted...the rest of his family doesn't give much indication of being South Indian so I just presumed it's cuz they've lived in the North all their lives...he seems to want to hold on to his culture more, hence the outfits and the relish for idlis etc...lol.

Also, it seems like KK's wife, Anushka's mother is Punjabi or North Indian so maybe that's why the mixed cultures.

They've tried to go for a bit of a melting pot of cultures and I don't mind the attempt...even the Bihari Brahmin Sinha family's depiction is not as cliched as it is with other such setups on TV...I'm liking the contrast in the setup of the two families...because apart from the social and economic differences, this brings in cultural differences too which I suppose will add to later conflicts.

Heyy Loq...lol long time indeed...how've you been? Nice to see a familiar face like you here too :)

Haha I also just finished binge watching today only and caught up on the storyline and quite liking it so far...knowing Sony's track record though, wondering how long this will be allowed to last...lol chalo will watch until interest holds...which anyways is rare these days...haha

This show weirdly reminds me of BBKD cuz of the simplicity, earnestness of the family interactions/convos especially on the Sinha side

Nice post. I am loving the simplicity of the show. So far like you said the good part is there is no cliched romance. I even like the teenage ones. Plus Sid 's family is interesting. Even i am warming to Anushka .

Anu🤗

I am good. Same old stuff.
Apologies but what is BBKD?
Same here. Interest span is too short these days. Was simply not watching anything until I got down with cold and had to take off from work and hence happened to watch the six episodes. Seems interesting so far. so far.

Ok ,I dont wanna be rude to you , in fact i appreciate your post , but your comment on '90s stuff falling flat' is completely untrue. I happen to be a fan of YUDKBH as well as ypntkh , so All i wanna say that YUDKBH certainly hasn't gone flat. In fact it has highest TRP among Sony shows and has earned a lot of appreciation for the beautiful depiction of 90s. In fact our show depends heavily on yudkbh ... both for audience and TRP.
