These kind of MIL's exist in real also. I was a victim of different levels of taunting even from the next day of marriage itself. I had to deal with not just one MIL but her sisters and other relatives as my husband side family were living together in one house. Luckily I had to deal that only for for few weeks as we went Singapore within one month after marriage. After that not that much issue as I will be visiting only once in a year and that too will be staying there only for few days.
