Ishita and Adi are better off without Raman...

CHAPTER-16

PEACE RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX, 5.00 pm

Ruhi was sitting on her Ishima's kitchen slab. She was happily gorging on the vegetable cutlet that Ishitha had made specially for the guests that evening.

" Ishima, why is Adi Bhaiyya taking this long for a bath?"

" He is getting ready for someone special..so he is taking his time." Ishitha said with a smile.

" So Aliya didi is special? But I am more special for you , isn't it Ishima?"

Before Ishitha could reply, they heard the doorbell. Suddenly, Ruhi's mood got off and she was no more curious to meet this Aliya didi.

Ishitha warmly welcomed her best friend and his beloved daughter to her humble home. As soon as Aliya saw Ishitha she tightly hugged Ishitha. Ruhi Bhalla's eyes narrowed to slits. Why is Aliya didi hugging her Ishima this tight, Ruhi herself had never hugged Ishitha this tight!

" ISHIMA?"

" Yes, Ru..coming."

Ishitha walked towards Ruhi and carried her over to the living room. A broad smile on her face. Ishima cannot carry Aliya didi like this anyway...

Ishitha sat on the sofa with Ruhi on her lap.

" Hey, chotu how have you been?"

" Great amma. Dadi too wanted to come, but her doctor forbade her to travel."

" It is fine. Atleast my pumpkin is here."

Abhimanyu chuckled . Ruhi was increasingly getting uncomfortable with this exchange. She could not grasp as to why Aliya didi would call Ishima as 'amma'.

" Amma, please don't call me pumpkin , na. You used to call me that when I was a baby...And do I like fat to you?"

" No..No. And by the way, this is Ruhi, ."

" So you are Adi's little sister?"

" I am my Ishima's daughter."

Everybody laughed at Ruhi's reply. But Ruhi did not find her answer funny.

" So Ruhi where is that brother of yours?" Aliya asked.

" AMMA, WHERE IS MY RED UNDERWEAR?" Aditya suddenly shouted from his bedroom.

" Adi-"

" THE ONE WITH THE PICTURE OF SPIDER MAN AT THE FRONT!"

Ishitha let out an embarrassed giggle and got up from her seat. It was totally unnecessary as her son dashed out of his room in nothing but a flimsy white towel into the living room. Aliya averted her eyes and tried hard to stifle the laughter urging to escape out of her mouth. Ishitha did not know what to do.Abhimanyu smiled at Adi like he was the joke of the century. Aditya Raman Bhalla wished that the earth would crack open under his feet and swallow his almost naked body into itself . He quickly turned back to run into his bed room but was rooted to the spot on hearing Ruhi's words.

" Adi Bhaiyya , I saw your underwear in the balcony . It was on the floor near the flower pot. Do you want me to bring it to you?"

Ishitha opened her door to welcome Raman in. He came quite early to pick up Ruhi.

" Oh hey Raman." Abhi greeted him.

Raman gave him a nod of acknowledgement as he sat on the sofa. Ishitha brought him tea .

" Where is Ruhi, Ishita?"

" She is with Aliya and Adi. " Ishitha answered.

" Raman , don't you want to meet my daughter?" Abhi asked.

Raman bit back the words of discouragement at Abhi's obvious enthusiasm to introduce his daughter. To be honest, he was quite curious to meet Aliya. He knew that Ishitha had an important hand in bringing her up.

Suddenly they heard a commotion from Adi's room. The three of them rushed into the room.

Ruhi was sobbing and throwing things about. Adi was unsuccessfully trying to calm her down. Aliya stood at a corner , hurt visible in her face.

As soon as she saw her Ishima, Ruhi rushed into Ishitha's arms. She sat on the bed with Ruhi. Ishitha's heart broke at the sight of Ruhi's tear stained face. Until then, Ishitha never actually realised how much she loved the little girl in her arms. She never thought that she could love anyone this selflessly other than Adi. Oh how wrong she was, how wrong...

" What happened beta?" Ishitha asked Ruhi, gently caressing her soft hair.

Upon getting no answer from Ruhi, she turned to Aliya.

" What happened Aliya?"

Aliya ran towards Ishitha and tried to hug her, but Ruhi pushed her away with all her might.

" RUHI!"

Raman's warning was however lost on Ruhi. A confused Abhi took his daughter in a comfort hug.

" She is a liar Ishima!I hate her." Ruhi managed to speak out in between hiccups.

" Liar, no no Ruhi . Aliya-"

" N..No Ishima ...she..,she l..lied to me. Sh ...she is telling me that ...that...I am not your d.. daughter."

" Adi , what is all this?" Raman asked.

" Mr. Bhalla, Ruhi wanted to know why Aliya addressed Mumma as 'amma'. Aliya explained that amma looked after her when she was a baby, so.." Adi answered.

" So what is the issue?"

" Then Aliya asked her if she called amma 'Ishima' for the same reason. Ruhi became furious at her question. Ruhi asked her why she was talking to her as if she doesn't know that Ruhi is amma's daughter...Aliya then told her that Ruhi is not amma's daughter."

" I g...got you b...back after so m...many years and..and sh... she is trying to sn...snatch you f..from me Ishima."

" OH Ruhi...Stop crying beta.Who told you that I am your mother?" Ishitha asked gently.

" I know Ishima...I understood everything by himself , you had to leave because you did something wrong with papa. You took Adi Bhaiyya with you and left me with papa as that he won't be alone...Now you are back and we are all going to be a family again.."

Ruhi's words badly shook both Ishitha and Raman.

" Ru..Ruhi, beta don't you know who Shagun is?" Ishitha asked in a bare whisper.

" No."

Ishitha glanced at Raman to see tears flowing down his eyes. His head was bent with guilt. Raman walked towards Ruhi and took her in his arms.

" Let's go home Ruhi." Raman said gently.

" Papa I don't want to go away from Ishima, please Papa.."

" Not today Ruhi. Ishitha won't be going anywhere and we will come see her soon, OK."

" Mani uncle, Aliya didi lied , didn't she?...Ishima is my mother, isn't she?"

Abhi swallowed the lump that rose in his throat on hearing Ruhi's question.

" I don't know beta, you have to ask your Ishima..But not now.."

Ruhi nodded her head. Raman turned back to walk out of Ishitha's home, silent and worn out.
