Buddhiya Ka Naya Roop
"Tum yaha se jao, mai apni beti ka khayal rakh sakhti hai," Amma glowered at Raman who sat beside a frail, unconscious Ishita...holding her hand in a grasp so unyielding that her fingers had turned white. His eyes stared at her pale, fevered face that was mapped with a trail of tears that had now dried.
It was only when Amma reached him and tried pulling him away that he realized that he had an audience staring at him. Some with contempt, some with anger and accusation, some with pity. The only pair of eyes that had been devoid of any reprimand, any anger and that stared back at him as if his deepest emotion, and every agony were mirrored by them lay shut to him right now.
Flashes of that horrendous day 7 years back blazed in front of him. The best day of their life had transformed into their worst nightmare. His new born had been kidnapped, then demanded to be traded with his 8 year old as if their babies weren't a part of him and Ishita but were a commodity that were to be bargained on. He had steeled himself to face one more catastrophe that had struck them...
His destiny hadn't allowed him a moments rest, charging one misfortune after another. But he had fought through them for the sake of his people, his family, his wife and children. His family had suffered because of the demons of his past. Ashok, Shagun and even Niddhi had been a part of his life and not theirs. But they'd had to bear unwarranted consequences without any of their fault, only because they were associated to him. He had made a promise to himself and to them, assuring them of safety...but he had failed. And in the blink of an eye he had lost the two people that had been and were the core of his very existence.
The thought that he was living in a world where Ishita and Ruhi didn't exist felt like a dark room with no escapes, the walls of which enclosed and caged him into solitude. He had crawled out from a hell hole years ago because of the very two women he had ended up losing. His brothers mocking words earlier that evening, his wife resonating the accusations he had made on her abilities as a mother, and most of all the rebuff he had gotten from his daughter haunted him. A deafening sound in his mind reminding him that it was his fault, his incapability that had led not just himself but his love, and his daughter to purgatory.
In the past when his family had first broken, he had thought himself to be inept and unimportant...blaming himself that his family had chosen another man over him. But it had been Ishita and Ruhi who had made him believe otherwise by loving him unconditionally, rebuilding his faith in not just himself but also the feeling of love that bound them together. It was Ruhi who had healed Ishita, found her, and chosen her to be her mother. It was Ruhi because of whom Ishita came into his life. It was because of Ruhi that Raman and Ishita had formed a team, learnt to be parents and given the child the love and adulation she craved and needed.
But this time it was all on him. His family had broken because of him. His ferocious, selfless, confident Ishita had for the first time given up. The one who fought against his every caustic remark, unjust comment and action had given in to his accusations and believed herself to be incapable of being a mother. And behind all his faade, brutality and apparent inhumanity he believed with every pore of his being that Ishita could be anything but an incapable mother. She was everything that a mother was and beyond.
Ruhi and Ishita had lost each other, and without them there was no him. They had given him life but he had inadvertently given them death. What had he done?
His eyes turned blur, his temple throbbed as he felt lightheaded...Warmth collected behind his eyes but his tears refused to fall as he froze with the intensity of the realization. A realization that he had lived with all these years, that had burdened in the form of his guilt but the searing intensity of which he had only felt today.
He broke momentarily before he gathered himself again. This wasn't about him, his feelings, his anger or his faults. It was about what all those had led to. It had broken a bond that had been imperishable, that lay on the base of unequivocal, pristine love. He wasn't going to sit idle, and ponder over who wronged who, he had done that enough for the last 7 years. He had to recollect the crumbled bits of his strength and remedy the massacre that had scalded the two most important people in his life, his Ishita and their Ruhi.
He didn't know what their future would be, he didn't know what his fate had in store for him, but he knew he didn't deserve better than what he felt now. The magnanimous vigor of his guilt, his pain on seeing his wife and child in pain was only the tip of the iceberg, he probably deserved worse for dooming them in return of the blessing they had been. He would do what it took to get Ruhi back to her Ishita, to get Ruhi to accept Ishita Iyer as her Ishima once again. Whether she would be Ishita Raman Bhalla, or would even want to be acknowledged with that name would never come in the way of the fact that Ruhi would always be Ishita's first, come hell or high water...he would fight everything to make that happen.
He held onto Ishita's hand with a new sense of determination and looked back at Amma," Mai yahan se kahi nahi jaunga," he said with stubborn bluntness that surprised one and all.
But Amma was undeterred," Kis hak se rukoge yahan, tumhara uske saath koi rishta nahi. Na pati patni ka rishta, aur ab nahi dil ka rishta. Tumne hi kaha tha uss din ki Ishita ab tumhari kuch nahi.."
"Hum pehle Ruhi ke Ma Baap bane the aur phir Pati Patni...Humara koi rishta ho na ho, hum aaj bhi Ruhi ke Ma Baap hai...Saath saal pehle humne humari beti khoyi thi, tab hum usse khone ka gam ek saath nahi baant paye the. Lekin aaj hume woh waapis mili hai, toh uske zinda hone ki khushi toh baanth hi sakte hai," Raman claimed.
"Par..." Amma argued only to be cut in by a stern call from Mr Iyer," Madhu bahar chalo.."
"Par Vishwa Ishu?"
"Ishu ko iss waqt jiski sabse zyada zaroorat hai woh yahi hai," he affirmed, agreeing with Raman. They could all latch onto what had happened in the past or could make an effort to move ahead. They had lost their moment to grieve but they wouldn't lose their moment to revel in the glimmer of hope that had seeped in like the first ray of sunshine.
He gestured the rest to leave them alone and took an unrelenting Madhavi and Vandita by their hand. Adi looked back once, partly anxious but mostly relieved before shutting the door behind him.

Ishita stirred feeling a cold wet sensation on her forehead, contrary to the smoldering heat rising within her. She struggled to move, to open her eyes even as her eyelids felt heavy... groaning as an intense wave of pain shot through her head.
Her Ru, the sole reason life had begun meaning anything to her, who had gifted her the blessing of motherhood, a sense of ultimate contentment and a life she had never dreamt of...now didn't want to acknowledge her let alone accept her as a mother. She had endured every accusation, hurt and rebuke but the rejection from Ruhi had crushed her soul...She writhed, "Ruhi...mujhe maaf kar do please..." she croaked," Ruhi," she repeatedly cried.
"Ishita," she felt a firm grip jostling her back to consciousness, a touch she could recognize in the worst state of her lunacy too.
"Raman," she wheezed, breathing heavily. She felt bereft of the cool touch on her forehead only to feel it on her eyelids. She realized he was wiping her shut eyes with a wet cotton ball and sighed at the relief she felt. She languidly opened her eyes, trying to sit up. At once Raman held her, insisting her to lie back," Don't Ishita, you need rest..."
"I can't breathe well lying down Raman, I feel nauseous," she panted tiredly, and he helped her up, supporting her with upright pillows behind her back.
She looked around the room to see it empty and wondered at once how they'd left her alone with Raman. But she didn't dare voice the same, not wanting to lose his presence. She felt vaguely comfortable even as the bitter memories of their distressed relation lurked around. She knew as a fact that there were things to be discussed, grief and joy to be shared and decisions to be taken, none of which she could do with anyone but him.
But he must have read the question in her eyes even before it appeared on her face. "It wasn't easy convincing them to leave, but I can get adamant. You would know..." he said sounding astonishingly casual, which made her look up at him. But instead of the expected anger, diffidence and harshness she saw a familiar shield of detachment, a glimpse of the self-depreciative, contrite Raman she had first married.
"What happened?" she asked, implying to the state she was in.
"You fainted...you've cried yourself to exhaustion, you are dehydrated, weak and running quite a fever," he explained making her rest her head back as he soaked the napkin in ice cold water and placed it on her forehead.
"Koi aur bhi toh baith sakta tha, aap yahan kyun ruke Raman?" she questioned, caution lacing her tone.
"Because none of them know how you are when Ruhi rebukes you...I've seen and known what you go through mentally and physically when that happens," he claimed rightly.
She let his words sink in, shutting her eyes as she felt her head throbbing again, this time accompanied by a surge of bile rushing up her throat. She felt his fingers tenderly press her temples and leaned towards his relaxing touch, wanting to stay that way for as long as possible.
Years of torment, pain and guilt had found solace today when they had realized that Ruhi was alive, feeling unburdened when she had taken her in her arms, and finally felt alive when she Raman and Ruhi had huddled together. She had almost imagined that they had flown back in time, when everything had been as it should have been, when Ruhi was with them, and when she and Raman rightfully belonged to each other.
But it was as if her world was only meant to stay disintegrated. Ruhi's harsh words, the unbearable amount of hatred her daughter had for them and the hate that had resounded from her had ripped her heart, the pain so intense that it surpassed all the pain she had endured on knowing her Ruhi had lost her life 7 years ago, surpassing the guilt she had coped with on thinking she had been the possible reason for it.
She suddenly shoved the napkin from her forehead and sat upright, covering her mouth, and struggled against Raman to go to the washroom. But Raman held her back and rushed to get a vessel for her to gag in.
"No..."she breathed in harshly," You don't have to see it..."
"There's no other way. You won't last a walk up till the bathroom."
"I can manage..."
"Either this or I carry you till there!" he offered and she finally hauled.
Raman gathered her hair and held them away from her face, smoothening her back gently, mumbling assurances with such tenderness that it made her eyes sting. She moaned, letting out a cry.
"Sssh bas...bas... Sab theek ho jayega Ishita. It's all going to be okay... I promise," he coaxed.
When she had relieved herself, she looked up at him in a state of dishevel, her face pale, her hair tousled. He washed the vessel and then set out to tend to Ishita... wiping her face with a wet towel, gathering her silky mane and tying it with a loose band. He patiently took care of her for much of the excruciatingly painful and uncomfortable hours ahead. Getting the plastic vessel to her whenever she was nauseous, washing it and bringing it back to her, wiping her face, smoothening her hair, forcefully administering her lime water even though she stubbornly refused to. He checked her temperature every hour, tirelessly placing the cold cloth on her head to bring it down.
His concern, his way of caring for her bought back memories of times when they had been each other's pillars, the only source of comfort for each other. Then, they would offer not just moral but even physical solace to one another...A thought that would have make her awkward only made her pine for the same now. The yearning for the life she had been shunned from 7 years ago, and a life she hadn't fought for either. She remembered a time similar to today when Ruhi had been taken by Shagun as part of a trick that had implied that they had given away the little one in exchange for Adi. Ruhi had been hurt and anguished, feeling cheated that her Ishima had bargained her instead of her Adi Bhaiya. She had taken ill and that night a guilty Raman had ministered care and comfort to her. Muttering the choicest words of encouragement and love, fed her food and put her to sleep in his embrace. All of which she craved for, but she knew was nothing but a distant dream...or maybe not.
Sensing her uneasiness, he slid next to her on the bed...lacing his arms around her shoulder he settled her closely to himself. His hard, warm body soothed her and she sighed...burying herself into his embrace. All she wanted to do was let her guard down, and cry...cry till she had no tears left and till she was numb to not feel anything anymore. But facing reality didn't come easy to her, not a reality that would unearth memories of the dreaded moments she had buried within herself. Even though they were running out of time, with much left to ponder on...this one night ahead of them didn't seem much to ask for.
"Feeling better?" he mumbled against her hair, caressing her back with one hand ...as the other kneaded the knots at the nape of her neck. She nodded and snuggled closer, not realizing when she drifted off to sleep.
*****
She was shaken awake a little while later. She opened her eyes to see a blurred image of Raman looking down at her. He had changed and was holding a tray in his hand. She immediately looked away at the sight of food.
"Ishita, tumhari davai ka time ho gaya hai, you need to eat something," he reminded, expecting her to retaliate, which she did.
Shaking her head vehemently she cried," Nahi Raman please, I can't eat...I will throw up..."
"You won't Ishita... and even if you do I am here to take care..."
"Won't it be much better if you won't have to...I could just sleep and you wouldn't have to waste your precious time hovering around me," she forcefully tried instigating him, knowing his inconsistent temper a bit too well.
But to her surprise he was undeterred," I could leave you to sleep, which would only lead to you not waking up in the morning at all. Your BP must be alarmingly low and you would collapse just about now. Won't that lead to more hovering?"
"Who told you to Raman? Aap jao...I am sure my family is capable enough to take care of me," she said sounding surly.
"They definitely are...but they aren't capable enough to fight against your rigid determination to not eat, not able enough to provoke you to do what they want," he suggested amusingly.
She turned to glance at him with censure, but even she had to agree," You're very confident about knowing me too well isn't it?"
"Am I wrong?" Raman asked, taking place next to her.
"No, you know the best and worst of me. You know how to charm me, and you know the easiest way to hurt me where it damages the most," she said casually, not even bothering to sound bitter...but expecting Raman to be provoked.
Instead, her sneered derisively...as if in acceptance of her sarcastic remark, which shocked her," And now you've come here to watch over me while I am vulnerable, to make your pitiable-self feel better about seeing me wither in distress while you still conceal your emotions behind your damned anger?" she ranted away not even realizing that Raman had made her sit up and was holding her upright without a wrinkle on his face...his face devoid of emotion. But his eyes were glassy, mirroring the battle raging within him...
He meant business...he wasn't going to give her the night she was yearning for, those few hours of delusion she wanted to live in. He was here to feed her food, administer medicine and then talk...Talk about them, talk about Ruhi...She was surprised that even after facing the most bitter revelations about her daughter, she wanted to escape... even if it meant for a few hours, even just until dawn. Because it would allow her to not feel the deluge of guilt and pain that was capable of drowning her to death.
He prepared a morsel and offered making her turn her face away in refusal. She half expected him to hold her chin and force the food down her lips. But she heard him sigh and plead," I am hungry too, I haven't had anything."
"You're big enough to go without food for a night..."
"You wouldn't care if I collapse?"
"Did you care that I had died?" She said unmindfully, her mind a mess...
Anything she had said to provoke him had got no reaction, but this remark couldn't taper one. Keeping the tray away he held her chin with a hard grip and turned her to face him, looking down at her with the scary passivity she had been observing in him all night," Let's not start this Ishita, because neither do you nor I have the patience to face this conversation or our feelings right now. If we would, then I don't know if we'd survive the night, if I would still be breathing tomorrow...and we can't afford that. We've seen our Ruhi today Ishita...and she's not our Ruhi anymore..." his voice quivered, engaging her attention finally.
"Because of us..." she whispered.
He nodded," Because of us..."
"It doesn't matter who erred, it doesn't matter what we planned, what we ended up doing or what happened to us...What matters is that we failed Ishita, we failed our Ruhi."
The sob that Ishita had been restraining chocked her and found its release...making her tremble. Raman would have cajoled her, caressed her with ease...but he held her firmly and shook her," We can't break apart right now Ishita. Ruhi needs us more than ever... even if she's arguing otherwise..." he spoke with decisiveness.
"Humara rishta, meri insensitivity, meri ego, humare issues aur misunderstandings ...ye sab iss waqt kuch mayne nahi rakhte Ishita. Hum saath saal pehle apni galti ki wajah se Ruhi ko kho chuke hai...Uska nateeja aaj dekh liya...We have to gather ourselves and save her...save her before we lose her to herself," he said and she agreed.
"So now we're going to eat food, then eat your medicines and sleep. So that tomorrow we can begin fighting for our Ruhi...I need you in this fight from now till the end Ishita, because I've never fought for her without you on my side and I can't," he admitted.
Ishita nodded, not looking into his eyes but contemplating the situation at hand. Their miscommunication 7 years ago, their misstep had led to a ruined childhood for their daughter, who had been exploited and abused, her innocence snatched to be replaced by nothing but bitterness. It was time to form a team, to come together and do what it took to get Ruhi out of Niddhi's paws. She felt dead beaten that moment, exhausted mentally and physically. But her mind was steady on determination to do what it took to correct every wrong they had done by their daughter. But there were many things that were yet to be pondered on, that they were forgetting to consider ...or finding it easy to shut their eyes to.
"Kya karna hoga Raman?" Ishita asked finally.
"We'll file a case against Niddhi... We have to get her arrested, and we have to get Ruhi back...Her custody still lies with us..."
"But she's not 8 anymore Raman, she is 15 and she's big enough to voice her opinions. Sunna na aapne usne kya kaha? Aapko lagta hai woh humare paas aana chahegi?"
Ticked by her remark he felt his temper rise for the first time that night," Woh nahi aana chahegi toh kya hum usse jaane de? We're mature enough to know what's right for her, she does not Ishita. We have to file a case so that Niddhi can be restricted to this country and cannot flee with our Ruhi..."
"I know that Raman, but the judge is going to study the case history and will know the many times Ruhi has undergone a custody battle. She/he is also going to take primary consideration of the fact that we are not living together anymore. What would we do then? Maybe we'll live together once again to reassure the judge and Ruhi that she will be part of a loving family. But is that even true? Have you seen how our families are around each other? Ready to cut each other's throats out ...And then both of us? We haven't interacted with decency even once after we met. Hum Ruhi ko ghar le bhi aaye toh uska kya future hoga ye kabhi socha hai? She is going to come back to a broken, disputed family, separated parents and everything dysfunctional in the name of a home. Where will she live? With whom?" She questioned pragmatically.
Equally perturbed by her every inquiry, Raman was jostled. He had truly not thought so far. Her questions ended up angering him, one because he didn't understand why she couldn't attend to what was urgent...but more because the answers to her queries were mostly indefinite.
"Ishita for God's sake... Is that even important right now? Even more important than getting Ruhi home? Mai yahan tumhare saath humari beti ka future discuss karne aaya hun aur tum," he fumed, gulping down his frustration," And to answer you...NO, I haven't thought that far, but I don't think anyone can in this situation..."
"Raman please calm down...Do you think that my asking such questions means I am not up for whatever we have to do right away? Of course I am... Mai aapke saath hun, har kadam par. Ruhi ko Niddhi se dur karne ke liye aur usse ek behtar zindagi dene ke liye mai kuch bhi karne ko tayyar hun...Chahe uske liye hume koi bhi kadam uthana pade, koi bhi compromise karni pade. But in these last few hours before we take any step...its worth paying a thought to how whatever we do ultimately affects not just Ruhi, but our other kids and two families. We can't let another one of them suffer because of us, we've done that enough. Hume sab ke baare mai sochna hoga... Kya aapko ek baar bhi iska khayal nahi aaya Raman? I can't be wrong here too," Ishita countered, irked that Raman never acceded to her views until he had argued enough.
His own thoughts battled with her reasoning. As always he had thought of the pressing issue, and she of everyone and everything. But although she was always right, he knew that nothing would the best for anyone else until Ruhi and Ishita would reunite. He could do nothing for anyone until he had made amends to his actions. No one else would suffer as much as Ruhi and Ishita. Everyone else had someone to call their own, something to make them want to live the next day. But Ruhi and Ishita didn't and for that he had to bring them together...because only then would he cease living this mechanical existence that would mean no good to anyone.
He glanced at Ishita's tired form. Sweat beads had drenched her forehead and the outburst and stress had strained her health further. Dutifully wiping the sweat he made her sit more comfortably and silently started feeding her. And this time she didn't argue, making her languor more than obvious.
Feeding her and a bit to himself he smiled ruefully at whatever he had been thinking," If everything hadn't turned out how it did years ago...This time of the year we would have been waiting for Ruhi's 10th board results. She would be either anxious over them or confident enough to party with her friends while we both argued on what the course of her future would be. I would insist she does an MBA so she could take over my position at the office, you would as usual argue that she be a self-made women and not just be gifted my business on a platter. Although you would sneakily suggest her to go be a Daanton ki Doctor too'," he laughed...finally earning a chortle from her.
Ishita continued," Adi and you would have been protective over her, scaring away any prospective boyfriend she could have."
"As if you would allow it Madam? You would be reciting two pages long of a lecture making her aware of the consequences such relations could have," he remarked.
"Don't talk as if you would have been easy about it. Maybe to be the cool dad you would pretend to, but you would only stay awake all night worrying if she was having a midnight chat with one of her admirers," she argued.
"But she would have a normal life, a normal home. She would have friends to talk to, to party and roam with. She would sing and dance and paint or do whatever she liked, and not to make a living but because she liked to do so. She would have her father to indulge her and satisfy her every desire...and her parents to pamper, cherish and even spoil her. She would still be innocent enough to come to us when she had problems she couldn't face alone...She would have Pihu to boss over, to teach and parent and she would have Adi to protect and guide her. They would fight all day, each complaining about the other to you and me...But they wouldn't make the day without huddling to each other and making a team against us," Raman imagined...their eyes tearing as they thought of a life they could have had.
Ishita wanted to say something, but sobs rattled her and she let go, as did he. They cried and laughed, finally sharing their grief, laughing unceremoniously when they thought of their Ruhi being alive and a few miles away from them...at the prospect of having her back. Raman took Ishita in his arms, to which she readily acceded and borrowed his support...nestling closer to his chest. Her head rested at the skin exposed beneath his collar and his in her hair...Their tears and pain mingling after years of lonely lamenting.
"We have to make this happen Raman...I don't know what will happen of both of us. If these dreams would ever be a reality. If we all could ever have a normal home, a normal family. But we have to get her back, we have to give our kids the life they deserve Raman...what have we..."
"Sshhh...bas Ishita bas... bas..." Raman muttered, cuddling her shaking form to himself," I've got you..."
He moved sometime later and plucked a handkerchief out of his pocket and wiped her eyes and nose. Tucking her hair away he sighed," Tum sahi ho Ishita, maine kuch nahi socha hai. Utna toh bilkul nahi jitna tumne...Apne gusse mai sochna bandh hi kar deta hun...kyunki agar sahi sochta toh kabhi Shagun ko propose nahi karta. She couldn't ever be my wife, I couldn't ever even think of marrying her if I had the sanity I should have had the other day...Not because of you and me, or because of our kids. But only because it can never be the right thing to do. Ever since my life got out of my hands, so has my anger and rationality," he confessed, taking her by a bigger surprise than anything had.
"It would be the most logical thing to do, if we were clear about a certain path, a certain future. But all I can think of is that we were married, we have three kids...and..." he groaned at the helplessness he faced on framing his words.
"And we have to abide by them. Not just Ruhi but even Adi and Pihu...They don't deserve this..."
"They don't," Raman nodded as their foreheads rested together, finally coming at an impasse they hadn't thought possible to reach.
They knew at the back of their mind that they were going to redo what had been the origin of their relation. They were once again going to compromise for their kids. Something that made them question if their relation was ever for themselves... but it was no time to reflect over that.
That day had changed everything forever. Their issues, arguments, accusations, guilt and distance had faded into temporary oblivion in lieu of their daughter's welfare...Come tomorrow there would be new beginning to a new journey, as uncertain as their first. They had taken the first journey not knowing where they were headed...they had mouthed one excuse endlessly to fight their feelings...But today it was no longer an excuse...It was what would save their daughter, what would bring her back to where she belonged, to give her what she had lost because of them. And they would do all it took Sirf Ruhi ke liye..."
"Sirf Ruhi ke liye?" Ishita implored.
"Sirf Ruhi ke liye..." he echoed...
None too sure...
It was one of those rare calm nights in Delhi, the kind that carried a soft breeze, the scent of blooming mogra, and a strange kind of silence...
