Preserving Pictures
"How is it...that I don't even get to meet my own niece?", Romi asked in a tone which somehow made my heart melt...during that time, I had forgotten that he was a pathetic, useless younger brother. His eyes started to tear up with overflowing streams rolling down his face to the rug he was laying face-down on.
"You'll meet her one day...I promise." I said, pitying his condition. I had met her, I had talked to her; but he...he had only seen her face. His eyes lit up to my phrase and clumsily made an effort to sit up with sleeping legs. I chuckled at his humorous actions, no matter what he would do or where he would go I knew for a fact that the people around him would never feel bored.
"Watchu laughin' bout?", he asked in a child's voice puffing his cheeks and squinting his eyes at me.
I knelt over to his childish self and pulled his cheeks, "Just that I have a stupid brother.", he hastily tried to let go of my grip but failed miserably, well...I am his older brother.
"Well?", he asked breaking the silence.
"Well what?", I asked confused.
"Well, how am I going to meet her?", he asked excitedly, bouncing slightly while he sat on the ground.
"I can't tell you now...I'll have to think first.", I said, maybe a little too seriously. I felt sad that I couldn't have made them meet each other at that very moment, but I knew if I would see her again, I wouldn't be able to refrain myself from starting any sort of conversation, which again Shagun would throw a bomb at and I would again come back with my head bowed to the ground and spend hours on re-thinking my actions on that night...June 25th...the night that it all happened. The night that I had been at that hotel, the night that I had seen that perverted man, the night that the woman fled the scene.
For some reason, I always had that same picture of hers, her backing away from the drunken man, her hands covering her torso desperately trying to prevent his wandering eyes to fall into places known only to her, her large, kohl smeared eyes pooling with tears. Since that night, I had never forgotten about her...her memory sure started to fade away and I started to lose interest but that picture, that picture always stayed. It was as if I had kept it in a restricted area of my brain to preserve it, preserve it? Wut.
As for the thing about introducing Romi to his niece was at the top of my list named Goals In Life'. I apparently had a very less profitable job now, considering the news of my arrest still did not die down and the announcement of my release was the fuel to the fire and the paps were all over it. I clearly could not enter back into the industry. So, I decided on taking up a job more behind the scenes, my parents were my saviors in this one; we had a very small business, so small I didn't even know it existed for half of my childhood. They offered me a small post but I earned enough to at least survive by my own.
I couldn't immediately fulfill his wish by doing something extremely EXTREME and going out of track to get them to meet, I couldn't afford scaring Ruhi. What would be her reaction if she saw two men just climb in through her window. HAHAHAHA HOW FUNNY WOULD THAT BE, I said aloud earning wide eyes and stared from the maids and my Mother.
"What? It was just a funny joke I read.", I said shaking my phone screen in front of them and went back to...whatever the hell I was doing, 'day dreaming' I think is what it would be called.
"Romi ," I said calling him from the other end of the room, he jogged over saying, "Yeah?"
"How would feel if I were to tell you, you were going to meet Ruhi?", I said failing miserably at hiding the smirk on my face.
"Well...I WOULD BE THRILLED. When are we going to meet her? Is she here? Wait how old is she again? Is she coming here to celebrate her birthday? Wait when is she coming here? Oh god we gotta put up decorations and stuff. And we also have to-"
"Calm down, calm down I didn't say she was coming right now. But I promise you, when you meet her, you'll have enough time to get to know her really well.
"REALLY!"
"Really."
Shagun's POV
I don't get it, it's been almost a year since the court order and there wasn't any connection coming in from Raman's side. It's almost like he gave up on Ruhi. Well that should be the case, I don't want her near that man. But, this was strange, deathly strange. Raman was a man with absolutely no patience, and this sort of patience...for one year! Something had to be up. I couldn't let him get away with whatever plans he had at the back of his mind...or...maybe he had none at all. Am I just imagining all this? Am I overreacting?
"Raman bhaiya, I need the fees for my college, tomorrow's the last day.", Romi came in stood in front of me with his hand forward, as if I were carrying bundles of notes in my pocket. He might have unknowingly going to be assisting me in this, but he was extremely 'stoopid' if that's how you spell it in his language.
"Oh you won't need to pay the fees this semester.", I smiled widely, I just had had to keep this going, it was just so hilarious to see him oblivious to whatever was going on in my mind.
"Why not?", he asked with puppy eyes, yeah! As if I were going to fall for that. Son, puppy eyes and stubble don't make you look pitiful, they just make you look like an eight year old girl who has facial hair. God! It took some time to erase that picture from my head. *tons of shivering*
"You can't do that, Mom and Dad wouldn't let you do that.", he said in a voice of a child trying to put up an argument which was destined to end with me winning.
"Son, you know nothing about what I can and can't do."
"I'm not your son!", he said stomping his feet.
"Whatever, you said you wanted to be part of The Plan, so yeah...commence operation The Plan starting...now."
"What?", he said furrowing his eyebrows and squinting his eyes.
"You'll know, one day...son." I couldn't help it.
"Goddamit!"
I knew Romi wouldn't regret being part of The Plan, I don't know he made such a cheesy name and Mihir and I mocked it so much that it was eventually addressed The Plan. The Plan, huh, I still chuckle at the sound of it. THE PLAN...EPIC BACKGROUND MUSIC, jeez I've spent so much time with Romi, I'm starting to morph into him too, focus Raman focus.
"Raman?" Mihir get my attention as he walks over to me at the dinner table."Yeah?"
"What are you going to do?", he asked concerned.
"What do you mean by that?" I couldn't get what he wanted from me.
"Raman, I know you're thinking something, and you're very, very determined to get it, just make sure you don't scare someone, if you know who I'm talking about." His hand came to rest on my shoulder, gripping it as if it were a support for his slowly breaking-down self.
"I won't."
"Rise and shine!" I bunched up the fabric of the curtains and pushed them to the other side, earning a hissing sound from Romi.
"What?" I asked obliviously.
"What do you mean what? It's Monday and I'm not even going to college anymore; you know Mom and Dad are going to kill you for making me quit education." He said in an obnoxiously serious manner. Yeah! As if he ever cared about education.
"Just get your butt up, we're going on an adventure!" I said flailing my arms in the air with the most childish imitation of Romi I could make. I really had to get myself checked, one Romi is enough.
"What do you mean adventure'?" He asked still trying to cover the piercing rays of sunlight hitting his swollen eyes.
"Just pack everything you own."
