Hamen Milna Hi Tha Humdum
Ishita turned her car slowly into the narrow alley where the Batra clinic was situated. As the car inched forward, she could make out the outline of a white executive sedan. It was him. He was here. She braked and dimmed the lights, turning off the engine. The windscreen wipers stopped abruptly and the rain and darkness further obscured her vision.
Thunder roared in the skies above her, and the rain poured down.
Raman had seen the headlights of an approaching car, and his panic subsided as he realised it was her. "But why the hell is she so late?" he fumed as he opened the door and got out of his car.
He strode towards her, the rain pouring on him, soaking his white linen shirt and plastering it to his body. Gusts of wind whistled past him, bringing a sudden chill to the Delhi night. He did not care. He could not even feel it. All his energy, his entire being, was focussed on one goal, on one person - and she was just metres away from him now. No rain, no tempest, no act of God or man was going to keep him from his woman now.
Blinded by the rain, Ishita had not seen him coming. Or perhaps it was the tears that had sprung unbidden in her eyes that obscured her vision. She was here. He was here. And what she said to him would change her life. Could she deal with the fallout, the consequences of her choice? But she had no choice, she realised, as she heard a knock on the car door.
She turned her face to the window and saw him standing there, drenched, his shirt fluttering in the wind. She unlocked the door and he opened it, slowly. He put a hand forward towards her and she put her hand in his. He pulled gently until she was up,standing, facing him. The rain and wind lashed at her too, moulding her pale blue cotton salwar suit to her contours.
Her hand was still in his.
"Ishita?" his voice was thick with passion, trembling with desire, yet uncertain, her name a question. He put forward his other hand and captured hers, entwining his fingers through hers, his thumbs stroking her palms gently.
Her name had never sounded so beautiful, she realised, as she stared at him with her heart in her eyes, searching for and finding a reciprocal love in his. His face was inches from hers, but only their entwined hands touched.
"Can I trust you?" She asked, her voice soft, her words filing him with hope.
"Yes" he said simply. "Hamesha" {Always}
"And last night?" she asked, determined not to drown in those eyes, as the rain eased magically to a gentle drizzle, droplets cascading down their faces, her voice caressing his ears.
"Nothing happened my love. I was trying to fight this, I was trying to fight you, every way I could. But I was lost the day I met you Ishita. I realised that last night. I can't fight this. I don't want to fight this. I want you, only you. I love only you. And I always will Ishita. Hamesha chahoonga tumhe. Hamesha pyar karoonga tumse. Hamesha." {I will always want you. I will always love you. Always}
"Why couldn't you have told me before Raman?" She whispered brokenly. "Mein ne appa se waada..." {I've promised appa,,,,}
"I didn't know jaan. I'm sorry, I know things won't be easy, but Ishita, give us a chance. Tell me you love me. Please tell me you love me."
"You know" she answered him with a sigh, as she let her heart claim victory over her mind and her conscience. The sincerity in his voice had broken through the fragile barriers she had been putting before him. She could question herself, question him, berate herself, berate him, later. Right now, in this moment, there was only one path, only one choice, and that choice stood before her.
"Know what?" His question was whispered, his voice suddenly hoarse, but demanding, urgent and insistent. He released her hands, moving his hands to her face, cupping her beauty, his thumbs stroking her cheeks gently. "Tell me. Batao mujhe."
"I love you Raman."
His hands stilled on her face. There was silence, their erratic breathing the only sound that accompanied the pitter patter of the now gently falling rain. His ragged breath fanned her face as he lowered his head, resting his forehead on hers. She shivered, speech becoming more difficult with his increasing proximity.
"Say it again"
She couldn't look into his eyes any longer, she couldn't handle the feelings that were threatening to overwhelm her, the desire that coursed through her at his touch, the love with which she wanted to engulf him, she couldn't witness the tears of joy which filled his eyes, the emotion that darkened his eyes.
"I love you Raman" she cried as tears flew down her own eyes. And then speech was no longer possible.
He had captured her lips. Slowly, softly, sweetly, he kissed her, his wet lips possessing hers, his touch gentle as he worshiped her with every pore of his being. She moaned and threw her arms around him, caressing his shoulders and back, moving up to his neck and digging into his hair, her body straining to his, clinging. He pulled away and his eyes asked a question. Then satisfied with what he saw, he recaptured her lips. Only this time, the gentleness was gone. His lips were hard and demanding, consuming her as he pulled her closer and closer against his body, his arms tight as his lips plundered.
"I love you, I love you, I love you " he murmured brokenly when they finally broke apart. She snuggled into him, her arms around his neck, her eyes closed as he held her so tenderly, so gently, just as the gentle drizzle once again started to intensify. He felt her tremble, felt her shiver and the reality of their situation suddenly came back to him.
"Baby, I'm sorry" he dropped a swift kiss on her cheek, then shepherded her towards his car. "Mere kaaran tum bheeg gayi. I was just so worried when you were late.." He hit the unlock button on his key, then opened the front passenger door, helping Ishita inside.
"Raman, my car?"
"We"ll pick it up later jaan." He shut her door then ran and got inside himself, starting the engine.
"We"ll go to Mihir's place" he said to her as the car moved forward. "it's close by"
"But Raman" Ishita protested, looking down at her drenched suit, clinging to her curves. "Mein aise, toh phir..." {Like this?"}
"Don't worry jaan. Mihir is in Bangalore. I have the keys to his apartment." He turned his attention briefly from the road to look at her, and the hunger in his eyes caused her cheeks to redden. "Tumhe aise kisi no nahi dekhne doonga" {I won't let anyone see you like this}
Ishita put a hand on his arm "Raman, aap aur bhi ladkiyon ke saath aisa karte theh? Mihir ke yahan lekar jaate theh?" She tried to but could not disguise the hurt in her voice. {Is this something you've done in the past Raman? Taking girls to Mihir's apartment?}
Raman sighed, then took her hand in one of his, squeezing it gently. "Nahi jaan. I promise. But we need to talk, hmm. Chalo, we will be there soon. Change kar lenge, phir tumse bahut baate karni hai mujhe." {Let's go to Mihir's and get changed, then there's many things we need to talk about}

Mihir's Apartment
30 minutes later
They had spent the remainder of the short journey keeping their emotions in check. Upon arrival at Mihir's apartment, Raman had escorted Ishita inside, his arm and a jacket he had found in the car draped around her, to protect her from the curious gaze of people in the lobby.
Once inside Mihirs apartment, he had found a pair of pyjamas and a dressing gown for Ishita, which she had put on in a spare room while Raman himself had gone into Mihir's room to change into a pair of Mihir's track pants and a t-shirt.
He was in the kitchen heating water for tea when Ishita walked in, towelling her hair dry, her wet salwar kameez in her hands.
"Raman" she called out shyly. "Where's the dryer? Yeh jaldi se dry ho jaaye, toh mein ghar chali jaon. Kitni der ho gayi hai." {I'll go home as soon as this dries. It's so late already}
"Mujhe do" {Give it to me} he reached out his hand for her clothes, but she shook her head. "No, I'll do it"
He smiled at her and opened the laundry cupboard which was situated at the back of the kitchen area, pointing to the wall mounted dryer. "Yeh lo jaan" he said softly, smiling at her.
She coloured at his endearment, brushing against him as she reached to open the dryer, and then drawing back in confusion as he snaked a hand around her waist, pulling her closer.
"Raman" she whispered. "Chodo na" {Raman, let me go}
In response, he pulled the wet clothes from her unresisting hands, and throwing them in the dryer, slammed the door shut, setting the dial to 60 minutes. All the while, one hand was holding her fast against him, and his task completed, he brought his other hand to cup her chin, tilting her face towards his.
"Abhi itni sharma rahi ho, toh Shaadi ke baad kya haal hoga, hmm?" {if you are so shy now, what will you do after marriage?}
She coloured a deeper shade of red, her eyes widening.
"Shaadi?" She whispered {Marriage?}"Haan, Shaadi" he cocked an eyebrow at her. "Ya pyar mujhse karogi aur Shaadi kisi aur se?" {yes marriage? or do you intend to love me and marry someone else}
He had been pushing her against the laundry counter as he spoke and Ishita found herself wedged in between the laundry tub and him, the dryer thundering overhead. Ishita stared at him, and a sudden uncontrollable laughter escaped her. "Raman" she gasped in between her laughs. "Are you proposing to me? Here, in the laundry?"
An answering smile twinkled in his eyes.
"Fine. If madam doesn't like this location, we'll change it" And he scooped her up in his arms, carrying her through into the living room.
Ishita's arms were around his neck and she held on tight as he sat on a sofa, pulling her down onto his lap. He held her close, his arms around her.
"Kitni moti ho yaar" he whispered. {You're so heavy}
"Then let me go. Chodo mujhe" Ishita scowled at him, and tried to pull herself free.
"Kabhi nahi" he murmured, his voice shaking with passion as he tightened his arms around her, making her struggles futile. "Kabhi nahi chodunga" {Never. I'll never let you go}
"Raman" Ishita whispered, overwhelmed by the need in his voice. "Itna pyar karte ho mujhse?" {Raman, do you love me so much?}
He buried his face in her arms, then pulled away, seating her on the sofa and walking away.
"Raman?" Ishita asked, confused.
"Ishita,listen to me, please. I want to marry you, I need you, but I want you to know everything before you make any decision"
"But Raman, you've told me everything. In New Zealand"
"Not everything jaan" his voice was low, his face dejected. "And maybe after hearing everything, you won't want to marry me, but I can't lie to you. I will never lie to you Ishita"
"Then tell me Raman"
He walked back to her and sat next to her, taking her hands in his. He had already told her in New Zealand about his marriage to Shagun and his separation from his son. Now he told her about the life he had led after Shagun's betrayal, about the nights spent seeking solace in alcohol, about his obsession with success, about how he had killed the compassionate family man he used to be, had taken on the ambitious ruthless persona he had felt he needed to succeed. And he told her about the women who had come into his life. The women he had used, and who had used him, whether it was for momentary comfort in sleepless nights, in alcohol sodden flights of despair, or just for brief sojourns into oblivion.
He could feel her hands squirming in his when he spoke, could see the discomfort on her face. But he never took his eyes off hers. He was not proud of his past, but he had survived. And who he was now, the man who had the courage to love again, would never have been had he not had the experiences he spoke about to her.
He bowed his head when he had finished, finally lowering his eyes from hers. "I know I have a lot of baggage Ishita" he whispered. "I'm not perfect, I don't claim to be. There are many man in this world who would suit you better, who would be better for you. Hell, that Abhi is probably a better man than I am. But I'm going to be very selfish here Ishita. No matter my flaws and my imperfections, I want you to accept me. You've shaken my world in the last three months. You've made me want a different life. You've shown me I can be the man I always wanted to be. And I want you in my life. I want to grow old with you. I want you to hold me when I stumble, to console me when I lose, to cheer me in my victories and to share in my joys. And I want to do the same for you Ishita. I want to share your life, I want to take away your pains and your sorrows. I won't let you down my love, I won't."
Tears overflowed from Ishita's eyes as she took in his confession. She so desperately wanted to say yes, so desperately wanted to soothe away his fears, to let him soothe hers.
"Raman..." She started, but he raised his head and looked her in the eyes again, shaking his head as he placed a finger on her lips.
"Wait, sweetheart" he said. "Life won't be easy with me. In fact, things are about to get a lot more difficult. Shagun has filed for custody of Ruhi, she wants to take my child away from me, she says I'm not giving her a stable home, that I'm not the right type of person for a growing girl to be around. I know I haven't been the best father Ishita, I know I've failed Ruhi before. But I won't let her go. I won't let that woman destroy Ruhi's life. But I can't do this alone Ishita, I need your support, I need you by my side. I know you love Ruhi, Ishita, and now I want you to be her mother. Will you accept us Ishita? Will you accept Raman and Ruhi Bhalla in your life?"
Ishita could see the sincerity and love in his eyes, but this was one question she needed to hear his answer to. "Is it just for Ruhi, Raman?" she asked. "Sirf Ruhi ke liye? Is this custody case the only reason you want to marry me?"
"No" he stated simply, and she knew in that instant that she believed him. "I want you to be Ruhi's mother, yes. I wasn't going to rush this Ishita. When I woke up this morning, I was going to take things slowly, give you time to get used to the idea of us, win over your family - but Ruhi's custody case has meant that I am rushing you, I haven't the luxury of time, because yes I am selfish, and I want you to be with me when all this happens. But no, yeh sirf Ruhi ke liye nahi hai. Tumhe khud ke liye chahta hoon. And if you have any doubts, then I won't press you for an answer now. I"ll ask you again, after I win Ruhi's custody"
"It's ok, I believe you Raman" Ishita removed her hands from his and cradled his face, her love spilling over from her eyes, present in her trembling hands, in her tremulous smile. She leaned over and softly pressed her lips to his. "I believe you "
Is that a yes?" He pulled away and his eyes searched hers.
"Yes" she whispered.
He smiled then, and pulled her into his arms, burying his face in the nape of her neck as he sobbed his happiness. Her tears mixed with his as she cajoled him to face her, her forehead against his, her lips seeking his.
"I love you" she whispered, in between his kisses. "I love you" he whispered back.
**********************************************************************************************************
It wasn't until much later, after she had changed back into her dried clothes, and they were in his car, driving back home, that she had told him in detail about the promise she had made to her parents that morning, to accept Abhi when he proposed again.
"Should I change my name to Abhi?" He asked with a wink.
"Raman, it's not funny. Appa has never asked me for anything, he and amma, they've stood by me, supported me. This is not easy for me to do Raman"
"Sorry, sweetheart" he said soberly. "I know it's not easy. But we will find a way. We will make this happen. Just leave it with me. Trust me"
"I do" she smiled, resting her head on his shoulder.
"Careful, jaan, don't distract me" he dropped a quick kiss on her forehead, before focussing on the road again. "I'll find a way okay. Just remember, you are mine, so don't you dare go around accepting any other marriage proposals."
"Haan but Raman, until we can find a way to tell everyone, we have to be careful. I don't want to hurt my family. And you know they will find it hard to accept you, to accept our relationship."
"Not to mention how my family is going to react" he laughed. "Can you imagine the fireworks?"
"But everything will be alright, na Raman?" Ishita asked anxiously.
"Yes baby" he replied. "Everything will be just fine."
