Like mother like son
She would return to Akka's around 9:30, the kiss interrupted by text from Amma asking if she was coming home for dinner, text first and call later
He let her walk away, picking up his Sam Adams bottle and walking over to the balcony.
She coughed, he looked up from his phone
"Can we go to a Doc?' he asked
"Nahi... main theek hoon"
"I see that" he said
"Will u go to one?" he asked
"Main theek hoon" she said
She would sit down and eat a bit, hungry after all that coughing
He would lean on the balcony looking towards the inside, checking gis email? or texts?
She would look at him, he wouldnt come in...
She would stare at the chocolate bowl "Can I take this home?'
she asked walking over to stand by the curtain, her usual spot... they both had "usual spots" already
"Umm Shravu ke liye..." she explained
"Is he at your place?"
She nodded...
"Ummm, I dont know, I was hoping I can send it to Nandu" he said
"thats fine" she said turning away, to set the bowl back on the coffee table
He had hit the switch on the balcony wall paging a guy from downstairs.
Mahavir showed up
"Inke liye chocolates pack kar dengey?" he asked politely
She turned to the balcony startled
She picked up a cushion and flung it at him, he ducked and it flew over the rail and headed down...
"Ayyyoyo" she shrieked, running, pushing him out of the way
"Your aim's pretty bad"
"Poda!" she cursed
"U cud take lessons" he chuckled
"The next time I am PUSHING YOU" she hissed waving her index finger at him
She saw someone walk in...
Hoped it was the help...
"Main ghar ja rahi hoon"
"Go at 9" he argued
"And then tum use 10 kar dogey phir main yahi rahoongi" "Akka will... Amma will kill me" (yet again blurting)
"Are u going to Akka's?"
"Shaayad, agar yaha se jaaoongi tab". "U are like a used car salesman,
jisko khareedna bhi nahi hoga tum bech dogey, bahut dangerous ho tum" she said staring at him worried
(I dont think I can get out of here, u are like a used car salesman, u will end up selling a car to someone that doesnt want to buy)
He watched her rant with rapt attention his eyes glinting
Mahavir came up with a big box with a hotel pastry shop reference on it
"Sab daal diya" he gushed to R&B
R&B didnt say "shabaash" or "thanks" or "Great idea"
He tilted his head to ack the guy
Looks like the help was losing it over II's arrival... he bit his lower lip😛
"Thanks" "Ummm, mujhe aapka naam yaad nahi" she muttered
(I dont remember ur name)
"Mahavir madam, woh" he stopped ...
She smiled as he left
"I am leaving now" she said picking up her phone as she coughed
"Mujhe raasta maloom hai main chali jaoongi" she giggled
(I know the way I can go)
"Shaadi ke baad bhi aise chhodne aaogey kya?" she asked smiling, he paused on the first step
(Will you walk me to the door after we are married)
"Matlab jab main Amma ke ghar jaaoongi, I am allowed to go arent I?"
(I mean when I go visit my parents)
"The stairs is not a good place to discuss" he muttered, nudging her to move😡
She stepped down slowly, checking her phone and holding her box, her dupatta trailing the steps...
she coughed and mumbled he noticed, even when she was by herself she said stuff.
Ranjan was downstairs listening to sitar and sipping his evening drink... bowls of nuts and other snack lay in front
He was pleasantly surprised to see her
"Kab aaye beta?"
At 7 Sir" she said
"Kaun Sir?' Ranjan looked all around😳
"Ummm.. Dad, this is very hard for me" she turned to look at the dude he looked up
from his phone and arched an eyebrow "Dont look at ME, u could have stayed then u wudnt have met him" look
"Sit beta" he patted the corner seat on the couch he was on
"Mujhe jaana hai, Akka wait kar rahi hogi" she said again spontaneously
(I have to go Akka must be waiting)
R&B looked up at her...
Ranjan:Aap logey beta kuch?
R&B: Umm no my beer is upstairs somewhere
He waved a help, "Inke liye Sam Adams lao"
The bar in the corner looked bigger than a five star's hotel's with every kind of liqor bottle and a sink and 100s of glasses of every kind...
The help uncorked a chilled bottle from what looked like a wall to her but was actually a giant frig stocked to the tip with stuff
She smiled...
"Dont worry beta, we dont drink it all, its for when we entertain, plus yeh jo hain aapke"
II blushed at the "aapke"
"INKO har country ki har beer chahiye, so we probably have the largest selection of beer outside of the American continent, or Germany" Ranjan laughed out loud
His eyes crinkled like his son
R&B couldnt sit BY HER, he sat across, placing his left ear phone in his ear
"Abhi to khair yeh yaha they nahi... 4... kuch saalon se, so stock khatam, maine doston ko bola woh apne beton ke liye le gaye, ab yeh aa gaye hain to laani padegi"
(He didnt use to live here for umm.. 4... i mean years now, so I emptied the stock, I had it all imported now that he returned)
R&B's expression inscrutable
"Aapne khaaya beta?"
"I had samosas and kachauris and paneer pakoras, mujhe cold ho gaya Jaipur mein to main garam aur spicy kha rahi hoon makes my throat burn but feels good" giggling
(I ate a lot of snack, my throat burns but it feels good)
"Meetha nahi laaye kya?" he looked for a help
(Did u have any sweet)
"Oh nahi Sir, I have chocolate I am taking to shravu"
"achha ek rule bana lete hain, har "Sir" ke liye aapko mujhe idli khilaani padegi, aur ek raat yahin rukna padega"
(Each time u say "Sir, u have to feed me idlis and stay here a night)
She blushed gloriously
R&B looked up to see her face... she fidgeted with the corner of the pastry shop box, nervous, fluttery
"Appa bahut gussa karenge" she said softly (Appa will get mad)
"Kaise? aap to unke ab rahe nahi, u belong to this family" R&B said proudly
"Appa says I am always his little girl"
"Nahi beta so to hai, but, u belong to my son now" Ranjan said smugly, like she was some prized posession
Ranjan ate from the bowl, a bite of something
"I wont ask u to eat, its fish" he smiled
A help passed by "Suno, inke liye kuch lao"
"Um noo Dad... please nahi"
"How is everything? Is the vacation lined up, packing started? We can park 7 cars so there is room for yours, on the drive way... I will email u the codes to the front door" Ranjan offered
"I am OK, mujhe codes nahi chahiye, koi to rehta hai na"
"ISKA koi bharosa nahi, kabhi ghanto bahar, I am at Gurgaon, the help... God knows where they are, its safe, I will email, or beta send it to her"
R&B looked up and nodded slowly...
"Office mein aap kitna bolte ho, inse kitna ladte ho, yahan ekdum chup?" he was shocked
"I dont know what to say, since I havent met you, as..someone Im going to be related to. umm... its a odd feeling" she smiled
I NEED SOME HELP HERE, HELLOOO SAY SOMETHING... I AM RIGHT HERE...

"U will get used to it, we can go for walks in the Ridge , its across the street if u notice,
they have a great walking path, his mother and I, tumhari Mom, we would walk every morning, and at nights in summer, kabhi kabhi to guards ko
dhoka dekar we would take a short cut home, usko bhi guards pasand nahi isko bhi nahi" he tilted his head towards R&B... and continued to ramble
"Usko shaitaan bache bahut pasand hain aur yeh sabse shaitaan. Usko non veg zyaada pasand hai aur isko bhi."
(My wife would take a short cut from the walking path so she could lose the guards trailing us, R&B hates guards too, she loves non veg and he does too, she loves naughty kids he is one)😳
"Hmm" II nodded
"If u go alone, they go in the car, or follow u in their car at night
mostly and when we walk the wooded area across the house. Hum politician to hai nahi, a few years ago in Delhi there were many events"
"I read" II nodded
"See! Isko KAHO TUM, mera matlab AAP" ranjan began
"U can say tum, main to chhoti hoon"
"Ghar mein sabse chhoti, Manny se bhi aur is se bhi"
"Manny... how is she?"
"Khush hai March 4th ko aayegi shaayad"
II nodded
"Waise aap kal parson mein shaam ko mere brother se mil rahe ho, unki family aa rahi hai, he has 4 boys... sab mast hain" Ranjan covered up
(U will meet my younger bro's family soon, he has 4 boys)
"Do They all live in Delhi?"
"Arey beta we are not like Iyers to go to America, we are all here only, bus yeh, Paris jakar baitha hai" pointing to the dude
"Aap nahi gaye?" she asked
"Ummm nahi" Ranjan said somberly
There was a complete pause for a few minutes afterwards...
II squirmed...
"He has 4 boys, 3 ki shaadi ho gayi 4 grand kids hai... mere total, 6 hain I am a grandpa now" Ranjan sounded proud
She coughed
"Isko dikhaya doctor ko" asked his son
"Ya in Jaipur" R&B said
"She needs to be seen again" Ranjan said
R&B gave her a "I TOLD YOU SO" look😳
"I will go soon" she said clearing her throat and coughing again
"Lasya is so cute" II agreed smiling "Nandu and Shravu and I are a good team, Sir... I mean"
"Sam bata rahi thi mujhe ki aap unke saath lage rehte ho, khelna bhaagna... good good... the house needs noise"
He went very quiet...
"when u have kids, this house will liven up, mujhe to 3 ya chaar chahiye, baaqi tum dono aapas mein decide kar lo" (I need 3 or 4 but will let you two decide)
She stared at the man in shock!!!😳
MUJHE EK BHI NAHI CHAHIYE... AYYO... AYYO... WHY DOES HE TALK SO NICELY, II TELL HIM BREAK HIS DREAM

II giggled, R&B ogled quietly
"Utkarsh hai uski wife Seema is trying for movies" Ranjan squirmed
"Oh!? Wow! A movie star? I am just an accountant"
"Thats the best, movies mein kya rakha hai, ur Appa did good betaji"
Main jaaoon? " II asked
"Aap hamesha poochte ho main hamesha mana karoonga, yeh to kahoonga nahi ki jao." Ranjan said finishing his drink waving the help to get him another one
"Evenings I stare outside, the compound wall is 20 feet high, all I see is trees inside and the
vines covering the wall... aap aao jaldi, u can tell me all about temples in Tamil Nadu, and life as a Iyer" Ranjan looked fondly, his eyes soulful and sad😭
She nodded...
"Ek din u can make Iyer food, one day I will feed u Punjabi food... ek chef hai... he cooks the best food..
yeh to kuch bhi khaata hai ya khaata nahi... neeche mushkil se aata hai..., aap rakho iska khayal"😭
Ranjan found himself losing his voice.. as he teared up, he hid it quickly standing up to go to the bar to get a ice cube for his drink
II looked on speechless😭
She got up and nudged R&B walking over to his chair
"achha beta, agar lado to cushion se mat ladna, chot mushkil se lagti hai us se" Ranjan said🤣
(if u fight with him then dont fight with a cushion, it rarely hurts)
II froze, turning completely gloriously red... "I am" "Oh"☺️
"Apni aim theek karo aur kuch aisa phenko jis se isko lagey chot" Ranjan
guffawed... reaching for the white and navy cushion soiled by falling on the wet grass outside...🤣
(U need to work on your aim, and throw a sharp heavy object)
R&B's half smile came and went😃
"Woh I am sorry... actually.. I am not sure... how... it just flew out of my hands. I am sorry if it fell on you"☺️
"Why are you sorry? Ghar aapka hai samaan aapka, dont be sorry betaji"😳
She vamoosed, wore her strappy sandals without sitting down (ya they put a chair by the door for her)
" U ARE IN SO MUCH TROUBLE DA" 😡she hissed as they walked
He walked AS USUAL NOT SAYING A WORD
"U COULD HAVE SAID IT WAS YOU THAT LIED, WHY DIDNT YOU?" "YOU TRICKED ME U SAID the chocolates were FOR NANDU. U LIED" she shrieked
"I would have if u hadnt owned up to it so quickly" he chuckled🤣
She opened the car door furiously, the guards froze in attention, all 4 of them...
"I miss getting target practice, mujhe lena chahiye tha. Aaj kaam aata, I could have so bloody borrowed their guns and used it today"
She sat down and turned on her lights he leaned forward to check to see if they came on as she sputtered...
He smiled again... hands in pockets leaning on his compound wall, as she drove off
