"What's the matter?" He asked as he sat across from her and placed an order for a club sandwich for himself.
"Nothing.." She replied trying to smile. A smile that didn't reach her eyes, he noticed.
"He didn't come?" He asked and cursed himself mentally for broaching this topic. Her fiance. Somebody she was engaged to. Somebody claiming her as his. Somebody not him.
"He can't come." She replied, wondering for the hundredth time why did she feel the need to defend him in front of her colleague. Or was she just pacifying herself trying to make an excuse on his behalf?
"I guess you'll have to make do with my company for now then." He shrugged as he suggested.
"I guess." She smiled. This time a genuine one.
She picked her orange juice and started drinking, looking beyond the glass windows of the cafeteria. Trying to figure out if all her life was going to be about waiting. While he looked at her and wondered if he could ever be lucky enough to have her just for himself.
"What are you looking at?" She asked, bringing him out of his reverie.
"I'm wondering if you've always had such big nose."
She touched the tip of her nose and scrunched it, "its too big, isn't it?"
He shook his head and bit his sandwich. "Not really.." He looked closely. "Its not as thick as your skull."
