OS- Ishq Bulava
We take people for granted not because they deserve it but because we are so used to them that we don't realize what they mean to us until the fear of losing them to some one else arise. Such were his thoughts as he strolled in the terrace and waited for her to arrive any minute. A smile automatically appeared on his lips when he saw her getting out of the car but it disappeared just as soon, when he saw her friend getting out of the car too to bid his good bye and hugged her before leaving.
He slammed the door of his room shut as she entered their home. She blamed his temper on his work stress and opened the door to enter the room.
"You finally remembered to come home?" He asked.
"I told you it was going to be late besides you insisted on staying home."
"I know what I said."
"Did you have dinner?" She asked getting her clothes out of the cupboard.
"You didn't wish I'd die of hunger, did you?"
"A simple yes or no would suffice." She interjected.
"I did." He lied and claimed his place on bed to sleep. He knew she wasn't to be blamed but he couldn't help but curse his luck when it came to men and his wife! He knew she was not the type to fawn at them but this was her best friend, one who seemed to have been in love with his wife once. Besides why would she care about her husband when that man practically occupied her whenever he was around, talking non-sense no doubt. Why would she miss him then? Why would she even care if he had dinner or he sleep empty stomach? He was still lost in his reverie when she came back in room and switched off the lights to sleep.
The evening was a nuisance, she didn't know most of the people and so was bored to no end. Although she had wanted to leave early but she didn't find the right moment to interrupt him or to excuse herself early. she couldn't back out on her words though and thus had to join her friend's success party. She turnedd to her side fixing the pillow under her head when she heard some sound at a distance. She opened her eyes to find the source and tip toed in to the living room, making sure to not wake her husband. When she found a dim light switched on in the kitchen and a figure bent in the open fridge door, she realized it was her own husband, looking for food indeed.
"Can I help you?" She startled him with her question.
"No, I'll manage." He said ignoring her help.
"Then whatever you are doing, make it two."
"Didn't any one tell you to eat dinner once only?" He grabbed the ketchup bottle from fridge and closed the door.
"I'm following the same rule." She said haughtily.
"In that case, help yourself." He said as he turned around from microwave with a huge bowl of noodles in his hands.
She didn't think twice as she grabbed a fork and dug in to eat in the same bowl, sitting beside him on dining chair.
"Get another bowl at least." He chided.
"We are married, remember? What's yours is mine."
"Really?"
"Yes." She said chewing her bite.
"Then I'd like to begin with your best friend."
"I thought you were straight."
"Should I prove?"
"No, thank you but I worry about him. What do you plan to do with him?"
"Push him off the Cliff."
She laughed before taking another bite and asked "why?"
"Where is his wife?" He asked instead.
"She died."
"Even she couldn't bear his boring company."
"Raman.."
"Be ware ishita you might be his next target."
"Please stop." She said suppressing her laughter.
"Then perhaps he plans to starve you to death."
"Why would you say that?" She said adding more ketchup in the bowl.
"Clearly he forgot to feed you."
"I didn't feel like eating."
"Why?"
"Why?" She repeated his question.
"Oh you have a hidden talent of being a parrot too?" He jibed, avoiding the meaning of her question.
"You know what I'm asking why did you lie?"
"I thought.. I .. We could have dinner together, only I didn't know you would forget about me in his company."
"You didn't tell me."
"That I have dinner every day?"
"No, that you wanted to have it with me."
"You didn't ask either." He sounded a little hurt too. "How was it by the way?"
"Boring."
"Why didn't you ask me to pick you then?"
"And have my request rejected right away?"
He replied aftert a long pause. "I'm sorry, I should have called you. Next time, remind me to pick you." He said getting up from the chair.
"No, I won't."
"What's...?"
"You will be coming along next time."
"Why?"
"Because I missed you today." She confessed, heading towards the wash basin in the kitchen.
He nodded and walked towards their room. When she came back to sleep, he was already lying over his stomach and seemed to be in deep slumber. She lied down beside him and turned to her side when she heard him say, "I missed you too." When she turned around to face him, he had his eyes closed and for a second she thought she had misheard him but then he surprised her again when he said, "I promise to look the same in the morning so you can continue to look at me tomorrow. Go to sleep now."
She was beginning to know him and his ways to show he cared. He would bring a smile on her face when she was tired, he would make midnight snack turn into fun with his jibes. It was these moments, these little moments when they were themselves with each other. This is what she was missing through out the evening, though she had been to many with her husband but she never got bored because he was by her side all the time. Yes, just being by her side made her comfortable enough to endure the parties. It was becoming a habit to be with him, or an urge to be close to him, she mused. She knew what it was leading to, love was just around the corner. She was still smiling when sleep took over.
