Part 7

"Bhai! Are you crazy? Why would you create such a misunderstanding?"

"I am not crazy Mihir. She is. She and her friend are getting on my nerves. Whole day it is Mani this and Mani that. Every time I try to talk to her she is either busy with someone from the family or on the phone with that Mani. 24x7 its just Mani, Mani, Mani... Every time she just praises him. He is her saviour. He is her vighnharta. He is her best friend. He knows everything about her..." Fueled by the alcohol in his system, Raman was on a roll. All the frustration that he had inside him came tumbling out. He downed another glass after this outburst.

Mihir tried to calm Raman down "Bhai...", but Raman wouldn't let him.

"... And if she doesn't have either of those two occupying her mind then she is busy with her social services. Delivering heavily pregnant women through curfews, going under disguise to meet the likes of that bloody Suraj Khanna, match-making... sorry match-breaking. Huh... I am nowhere in all this." Raman's tone by the end of his speech was very melancholy.

"Bhai, I'm sure you've just misunderstood..."

"I know Mihir. We married for Ruhi. This marriage was because of Ruhi. I was such a fool. I thought after all that we've been through... I thought there is something between us... you know something more... something more... like... like we're not just Ruhi's parents... not just son-in-law or daughter-in-law... I know it started out like that but... after all these months... so much struggle... I thought... I believed that you know... maybe she thought of me as more than a friend... Haha... but I was so wrong... When Mani came into the picture I realized I was not even a friend... let alone more than friend... I was so nave..."

Mihir didn't know what to say to Raman or how to console him. He tried to be diplomatic.

"Bhai, you drank too much of this stuff. You're not thinking straight. I think you should sleep now. Come, let me take you to my room. If you go home like this Bhabhi will be upset."

"Yes, your Bhabhi doesn't like it when I drink. She says it sets a very very very bad example for Ruhi. Ruhi's papa has to be the best. I used to drink every night before. You know that right?" Raman takes another sip of bourbon straight from the bottle.

"Yes, bhai, I know, but its enough tonight. I thought you stooped drinking."

"Yes, I did. I did it for my wife. But you know what? ... Turns out I did it for Ruhi's mother." Raman laughs at this statement, while Mihir just looks at him confused.

"Bhai, Ruhis' mother and your wife are the same person." Mihir states to Raman and Raman vehemently refutes, shaking his head from side to side.

"No, no, no... They are not. Ruhi's mother is Ishima. Everybody says that my wife is Ishita. I even believed them for a while." Then Raman whispers into Mihir's ear. "But I know the truth now... There is no Ishita."

"What nonsense are you talking bhai?"

Raman frowns. "It is the truth Mihir. First and foremost, there is Ruhi's Ishima. There is Appa and Amma's Ishu. There is Mihika's Akka. There is Mummy-Papa's bahu. There is Simmy-Rinki-Romi's Bhabhi. There is Mihir's sister. There is Bala's girlfriend. There is Vandita's Ishu. There is Shravan's Chitti. There is Mani's best friend Ishu. There is no Raman's Ishita. No. None. Raman has no wife."

"Bhai, I'm sure Bhabhi cares about you too."

"No, Mihir. She doesn't. She hasn't called me even once since I left the house in the morning. She didn't. I'm sure she has called Mani ten times already by now. And asked about his entire day from him."

"Bhai, I assure you. Bhabhi cares about you. She would never cheat on you."

"I know Mihir. That Madrasan would never even dream of cheating me. I just don't trust her friend'. That woman is so stupid, she wouldn't even know when he steals her away from me. Bewakoof Madrasan."

Mihir just didn't know what to say to that. He realized that the husband-wife relationship was headed towards stormy waters. He didn't want to judge anyone. He knew his bhai would never doubt his Bhabhi without a valid reason and he also knew that his Bhabhi would never even dream of hurting his bhai. He had seen the care and love she had in her eyes for Raman. And judging by the state that his bhai was in right now, he was in deep already. It was time to push them both off the cliff together. Hopefully they would hold each others' hands before they hit the ground.

Raman's drunk rant was heartfelt which is why I could feel his pain. But Mihir is right, Ishita is not like that and hopefully both Ishita and Raman will understand each other soon.
