Part 6:
Slowly, a shrill shiver went up her spine when she felt her kurta being lifted up. Before she could turn around or react to it, his fingers touched her bare skin around her waist. It felt like electric current passed through her. She had to stop this before it was too late.
Her logical mind took over and the next moment, she tried to get up in a startle, "aiyooo...yeh kya kar rahe ho aap?"
He placed his other hand on her mouth, "shhh...mujhe yeh karne dho...warna dono ko neend nahi aayegi"
Her eyes widened in shock and locked itself in his eyes which reflected raw passion and desire.
******************************
His actions, his tone of talking and his words were shuddered her with the anticipation of what is going to happen and she couldn't see anything else than what was obvious between them.
She gathered up all her logical senses and shrugged, "What do you mean Raman? aap honge desperate...but I am not... just stay away from me and don't touch me like that..."
Though her words were demeaning him and his intention of giving her relief from the pain, it also gave him a naughty thought of teasing her a little more. Her thoughts about what he intended to do to her made him chuckle.
His fingers continued to play around her waist and he enquired in a not so innocent tone, "kis baat ki desperation Ishita? Aise nasdeeq aane ki ya tumhe aise pamper karne ki?"
He said that coming closer to her and his hands nudging through her bare skin making her wriggle. It required a lot of effort and restraint for her to suppress the moan which passed her throat by his erotic touch. He literally was playing and teasing her senses.
His play with his fingers evoked sensual feelings of pleasure that she never before experienced. But she tried her best hide all those behind the mask of rage and fumed at him.
He wasn't done yet and so continued, "waise bhi agar desperate hua toh bhi itna gabra kyun rahe ho? Dont we have the right to get desperate? Shaadi kiya hai humne...pati patni hai hum..."
She scrutinized his words and the naughty glint in his eyes while he gave a trademark "caught you" smile and said, "Jo tumaare mann mein hai woh saaf saaf dikhta hai...Madrasan ka wish toh dekho...[sighing in mock annoyance, he added]...madam, main toh bas yeh balm deh raha tha...lo khud lagaa lo ya mujhe help karne dho...I am getting disturbed by your tossing up and down...Stay quiet and let me sleep...understand?"
She nodded silently and in her mind, she wondered if that was all that he was thinking. Though she didn't let out the disappointment hearing him say that, her heart tugged deeply. She felt hurt that he was only trying to get rid of her back ache due to which he wasn't able to sleep. His words which meant that nothing else was his botheration pricked her deep. It only meant that he wasn't thinking on the same lines as hers. She wasn't alluring enough to make him want her. Somewhere, the woman in her felt inferior and insulted. A complex feeling it was and she couldn't control her roaming thoughts.
Perhaps she was over thinking. Perhaps, all he saw in her was a mother for his daughter. May be it was all just care, concern and respect and never what she had started feeling for him. May be she had read it all wrongly from his eyes. May be it was all just her own imaginations. Hmmm, he himself had told it to her a lot of times about her being fat and unattractive. Well, maybe she was imagining things...She was in an all time low and in a self pity mode. She smacked herself for all those crazy thoughts. It was her disappointment doing all that to her.
She only snapped out when she felt the cool soothing yet a burning sensation of the balm searing through her skin at the back. That's when she realized that he had taken her silence as a nod to let him apply the pain gel on her back. His fingers nudged around the area and she felt good. A cool numbness replaced the crunching pain. Soon, he stopped rubbing it and went back to his place on the bed wishing her good night.
She didn't know whether to feel happy about it or disappointed. On one side, she felt good that he cared for her and helped her. On the other side, the same silly thoughts struck her hard. Even after such an intimate encounter, he had done it in such a gentlemanly manner. It was so platonic that felt nothing like a husband doing it for a wife. But then she chided herself for even expecting such a thing. Weren't they just Ruhi's parents bonded together in a contract marriage? How could she expect anything at all from him as a husband? That hurt, even the mere thought hurt.
She let a deep sigh before turning to the opposite side facing the wall and tried her best to sleep but she knew that sleep was a distant dream now. It had been so since she had started experiencing a myriad of emotions towards Raman, her husband or may be just her daughter's father!
Well on the other side, he couldn't help glance at the sleeping form of his wife. He pitied himself for not able to close down this gap between them and complete their marriage. With such an attractive lovely wife besides him on his bed, all he could do was to stare at her from a distance? Or wasn't she his wife but was just his daughter's mother? How could he forget their just for Ruhi deal and let himself wander into the territory which was only for a husband and wife? They had married only for Ruhi and she had made it clear to him too.
Individual ego is always the enemy in love and here things weren't different too. Both had problems of letting go and accept that they have fallen for each other. It was always the thought that let him or let her confess first.
Thoughts cloud both of them till they are overpowered by sleep.
***************************
Next day was a busy one for Raman. He had number of meetings lined up and Ishita had her appointments too. She dropped Ruhi at school and went to her clinic as usual.
Adi's call came as a pleasant surprise for Raman. He usually doesn't pick any calls during his meetings but this call wasn't ignorable. He excused himself and took the call as he walked out of the conference room. Though Adi's call was a happy surprise, the matter wasn't so pleasant. Raman was literally in a lurch when Adi demanded a holiday with his father, mother and sister. It couldn't be called an unreasonable demand because as a kid, he had that right to wish for it but it was really a tough decision for Raman to make. Yet he had to oblige to his son's wish. But what Raman failed to see through here was Shagun's evil hands behind Adi's new wish. Raman's obsessive love for his first child Adi was being used as bait always. Raman's weakest and most sensitive nerve was Adi and Shagun exactly knew when and where to press to get Raman down to her.
Well proving to Ishita that she had higher significance in Raman's life was Shagun's ultimate goal now. She wanted to show to Ishita that Raman still loved and cared more for her. She was literally holding Adi as bait and trapping Raman to become a puppet in her hands.
That evening, he was before Ishita wanting to tell her about the holiday plan. He knew that this was way too much to ask for but he had to. He had no choice but accept to his son's demand. He knew he was wrong when seen from Ishita's perspective but he couldn't help it. He knew he was repeating his mistakes again and again but when it came to Adi, he didn't mind committing mistakes. He knew, he realized every damn thing but the worst part was that all he could do was vent out to himself and keep repeating his mistake of hurting his wife who had managed to grow in him. Yes she had but he was so helpless that he couldn't even acknowledge that reality nor could he stop himself from hurting her so mercilessly.
He stood helplessly before Ishita who appeared extra cheerful today after her routine play time with Ruhi. Ishita asked Ruhi to sit down and do her homework while she freshened up. Ruhi promptly agreed and went to her room. Raman was relieved that he got some private time to tell Ishita about it.
Raman felt a prick when he saw her coming into the room smiling and realized that he was going to give her tears again and put an end to her sweet innocent smiles. He knew Ishita would be hurt but also felt that she would understand his fix situation. She had always been the understanding and sensible type of woman.
He slowly broached on the topic while she sat down stitching the button of her kurta. Initially, she misunderstood that he was meaning a picnic for their family which obviously included her but he gave her a jolt back to the reality when he said that he meant a picnic with Adi, Ruhi and Shagun. "Shagun", that name hurt and she couldn't hide it though she wished to. Raman had meant his family with Shagun and she had no entry there. She felt like a complete outsider and became a stranger at that instant. The needle in her hand had pricked her finger and blood oozed out but that pain was nothing when compared to what he gave her.
He rushed to help and also explain, justify his action but she held out her hand stopping him then and there. She blinked back the tears covering it up before him and stood up. She couldn't stand before him for more time because controlling her tears was getting difficult. She walked to the ward robe to take another kurta so that she could go away from the room. She just replied as she hastily looked through the lined up dresses, "accha plan hai...You will get to spend time with Adi...Ruhi ko bhi apne bhaiya se khelne ka baatein karne ka chance milega...Good!"
He didn't know if he understood this response from her and also wasn't sure if he was happy that she understood things in the right way or was he disappointed by her calm sensible reply.
She was about to leave the room when he spoke up, "Ek aur request hai...agar tum Ruhi ko manaa logi..."
She understood what he intended and sarcastically gave a faint smile, "mushkil hai usse samjhaana...choti bacchi hai na...roz roz dil bathalna usski bass ki baat nahi..." her words trailed off and he was able to read between those lines and understood it was for him. How will he ever explain what he felt to her? She added soon, "but I will get her to agree...don't worry Raman!"
She stopped only after she entered the wash room and bolted it from inside. She could let her hair down and be herself here. She could cry, scream, vent out in that private place. None would want to hear her cries and sobs. Or perhaps, she didn't want anyone to know it.
After what felt like forever, she wiped away all her tears without a trace left as she felt that it was a waste crying for him and it wasn't going to make any difference to him. He wasn't even going understand it and even if he understood, he wouldn't acknowledge it and there was very little that he could do about it.
She walked out of the Bhalla house and luckily for her, Ruhi had finished her homework and was at her mother's place. She briefly informed Mrs Bhalla that she is also going there and will have dinner there. She had to be strong now and not let her parents know that she was so upset. She knew that they would be paranoid when they know about Raman's picnic plan with his family which didn't include their daughter but then for now, she didn't want to cause a sleepless night for all.
Later than night, Ishita carried back a sleeping Ruhi to their room. She put her to the bed near Raman. He was waiting for her to come back. He wanted to talk to her, comfort her, justify his stand to her but she wasn't up for any of it.
She had come late on purpose so that he would sleep by then and then that would save her from another awkward talk with him. Literally she was shattered and broken from inside but never would she show it to him. She would never let her tears for him known. Raman sat up the moment Ishita came into the room. He waited till she put Ruhi near him and then voiced as she moved away from the bed, "Ishi.."
She didn't let him complete but replied, "Maine Ruhi ko manaa liya hai...She will come with you...just take good care of her"
He wasn't going to ask about that but she didn't want to talk about anything else. She made it crystal clear to him. She walked out and he wondered where she was going. As if answering his unasked question, she replied, "MIhika and Vandu akka are waiting for me...main wahi jaa rahi hoom...subah Ruhi ke uttne se pehle aa jaavungi..."
He knew that she was avoiding him and minimizing the time they were together. He longed to talk to her but she wasn't giving him a chance. He went and stood at the balcony thinking that she would also be as sleepless and restless as him. He thought she would come out and then he could take a walk down with her like they did before. He would pour out his heart to her and that would unburden him but she never came out that day. She didn't want to come face to face with him even by accident that night. She wouldn't be able to control herself if she saw him.
She was helpless too because her vulnerability and tears never ceased when before him. She was feeling like an alien and this felt like a strange new place for her. She also didn't want to show off as a cry baby and let her emotional out pour tie him down. He, himself had to realize it and not by her angry, agonized gestures.

Vandu akka's pregnancy news that morning had brought in lots of happiness and reasons to celebrate in the Iyer house. So Ishita felt that she shouldn't ruin it with her own problems and also thought that she would forget her worries when she is with Mihika and Vandita.
Though her amma and Vandu akka had doubts seeing her puffed up eyes, they didn't probe much as they knew that Ishita was capable of handling her problems. They were also confident that she would confide in them if the matter was serious.
Next day, Shagun and Adi came over and soon after Raman and Ruhi left with them. Ruhi was pretty upset and half minded about the whole plan. She didn't want to go without her Ishima but Ishita convinced her and got promises from her to be a good girl. Ishita also told her that it was her chance to get friendly and play with her Adi bhaiya. Raman was really impressed with Ishita's way of tactfully handling his daughter. It was something which he or Shagun couldn't do any day. It was difficult for him to do this as well. He was already missing his Jhansi ki rani and 2 days without her was going to be nothing less than a torture to him.
She waved bye to Ruhi and went in without a second glance at Raman who was pretty obviously hoping to catch one more glimpse of her. Raman strained his eyes to get a glance but Ishita wasn't there. What he hadn't noticed was Ishita behind the curtains and her eyes flooded with tears. She had somehow handled the Iyer family and Bhalla family convincing them that she was fine with this picnic plan. They all knew that she wasn't fine but had no choice but nod and pray that no more shocks come their way.
Romi was the only one who couldn't take this in a calm stride at all. He was quite anxious about his bhabhi's happiness and he knew very well that his Ishita bhabhi wasn't fine at all. He understood how much agonized she was from inside. He walked to her as she stood clutching the curtains, "aap yeh kyun kar rahi hai bhabhi? Why didn't you stop them?"
Ishita wiped her tears quickly not wanting him to see it but he weakly let a smile, "mujhse chupaane ki zaroorat nahi hai bhabhi...I know what you are going through...kaash bhai bhi samajhte..."
She looked away and replied, "Raman sab kuch samjhte hai Romi but he can't do anything about it...waise bhi mere rokhne se kuch nahi hota...They would have gone anyway..."
She didn't wait to prolong the conversation. So she walked away into the room saying that she had to go to the clinic.
It was a Saturday and Ishita had some appointments in the afternoon. She dressed up quickly and left. None stopped her because they knew that only by immersing herself in work could she get a grip on her worries and insecurities.
It was evening and appointments were nearly getting over when Ishita received a call. It wasn't Raman but Subbu. She took the call wondering why he was calling now. "hello"
Subbu spoke up from the other side wanting her to accompany him to do some shopping for his new born baby and the rest of the family. He wanted to get gifts for everyone in the family and wanted Ishita's help in selecting it. He had hoped to get Vandita's help but now after knowing about her pregnancy, he didn't want to trouble her. Ishita thought for a second before she nodded a yes, "ok Subbu...I will leave the clinic in 10 minutes...We will meet at the shopping complex..."
Then she quickly made a call to Toshi ji and told her this plan. To Ishita's surprise, Toshi ji instantly agreed, "jaa putthar...chaaho toh khud keliye bhi thodi shopping karle..."
Ishita smiled at the warm response and felt lucky to have such an understanding mother in law. The next instant her thoughts wandered to Raman and his going away. She sighed and reminded herself, "sab ko sab kuch nahi miltha Ishita..."
She winded up her appointments and soon left to the shopping mall.
*******************************
Around dinner time, Raman called up the Bhalla house to tell them that they reached and were comfortably put up in a good resort etc etc. Mrs Bhalla isn't very happy hearing anything at all about it. She just plainly nods while Raman enquires, "maa, Ishita aagayi kya? Main kabse usska phone try kar raha hoom..."
With each missed call, he was smacking Ishita for not picking it. He kept thinking to himself, "zaroor charger pe lagaake apne amma ke ghar mein hogi...bewakoof madrasan!" but his mother gave him a surprise when she said, "Ishita baahar goomne gayi hai...kuch shopping wopping karne gayi hai...busy hogi, shaayad isiliye phone nahi utaaya ussne...aayegi toh main kahungi ke tumne call kiya..."
Raman was a little upset that Ishita had gone for shopping happily. Well what did he expect her to do? Sit and brood over the truth that her husband was holidaying with his ex wife.
He slowly enquired assuming it was with Mihika that she had gone, "Shopping? Mihika hain na usske saat?"
He was concerned for her and didn't want her to be left alone. That concern was reflecting in his questions.
Mrs Toshi corrected him, "Nahi puthar, woh Subbu hai na? Usse kuch shopping karni thi...aur Ishita ko poocha..."
Raman felt so annoyed. He flared up instantly and his voice showed off his annoyance, "Kya?? Bala ke bhai Subbu ke saath??"
Toshi ji couldn't help do a small dance in her head hearing that from her son. She knew that this would surely make a difference to him, "haan haan...wahi Subbu"
Raman didn't want to let out his annoyance more to his mother and so disconnected saying that he would call later. Toshi ji placed the phone back and smiled, "ab tujhe patha chalega Raman ke Ishita ki dil pe kya beeth rahi hai...
